Shoulder Armour By sora-roxas-ven. 25/06/09, 06:25 am |
| Well, I kinda made the title usefull. I'm making Ventus's (Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep) armour, it's only about 30cm2 at the most, but I need to layer lots of bits of metal. Problem 1: I want the armour to be strong enough so you can't dent it when you knock on it (think like a door...) so what thickness could you recommend? Problem 2: Where can I get the metal from (aluminium) - In a suitable size - in Auckland? Problem 3: How can I get a nice curve in the armour? Image of armour: The first two pics are from the game, the other two are from a very accurate replica made by saeru

This is craft foam armour - it's surprisingly durable, and if you paint it nicely, it will look just like metal. Best painting tips come from miniature painters lol, have a look on warhammer and D&D boards I've used this method before for an armoured headpiece, and it was fine - because it's coated with glue, it stands up to a decent amount of knocking about; coating the paint after you're done will also prevent chipping. |

| If I run out of time, I'll make it out of craft foam, but I really want to make it out of metal, as I'm entering my costume into the technical... The tutorials rock, though |

| Your best bet for metal would be scrap dealers, and I suggest you learn to weld lol...aluminium is lightest, and probably the easiest to work with (provided you keep it out of salt water). I suggest asking Dr Google. I wouldn't have a clue beyond that, but GOOD LUCK!!
Oh wait - medieval peoples may know of blacksmiths. Neimheille would be a good person to ask, she may know some people, (oops, never mind, she'll be the one juding you XP) otherwise contact the SCA and see if you get any hits. There are definitely blacksmiths around...but how to find... |

| Panelbeaters may also have some tips about working with metal and creating bends? Plus if they're friends/really like you they may help/let you use their tools? Maybe?

| Uhhhh....
I'd check that you'd be allowed to have it in metal. :3 I know there are some rules against metal props.
- Cosplay Contest Rules wrote:
- 3a) Prop weapons cannot pose a risk to yourself, the organisers, the convention centre or the general public. So we ask that your props and weapons be made of materials that will not cause harm. This includes- but is not limited to- items that can cut or burn or are very heavy objects. No real weapons (including but not limited to air guns and training weapons) or metal prop weapons are allowed in the contest. There are many online tutorials and guides for how to make props on the forums of http://www.cosplay.com so if you feel unsure how to go about working within this rule please visit there first. Past contestants have used pre-made plastic toys as a base with papier mache, foam, Das, polymer clays, plastic piping etc. to build parts.
NO METAL PROPS AND REAL WEAPONS ON STAGE- NO EXCEPTIONS.
No projectile weapons, no pyrotechnics allowed. |
