Historic costume advice/guides/what have you By neimhaille. 22/05/09, 07:17 am |
| So as not to derail a thread even further: - Quote :
- @Neimheille: you know, if you ever retire as
cosplay judge, you're going to be mobbed by everyone who ever wanted to know anything about historical costume but wasn't allowed tips at the time Just to clarify I can do general help just not specific one on one help/advice for contest costumes :) One on one help in general may be pushing it a bit too- just for how it may look to others.
But I am able to to talks and tutorials on subjects that may be of interest, that anyone can attend and is publicised to as many as possible (and I will be publishing notes now after Geddon panels as I have the space on my site). I would have to take down my website otherwise and stop posting to any of the costuming forums that I do (cosplay, ACG, the various specialist groups, deviant art... etc)! I also wouldn't be able to do the series of workshops I'm doing right now :)
So I am open to doing a guided tour around the development of costume from Ancient times to now if anyone is interested. I have dozens of patterns that range from "here's a rectangle" to "Eschler has nothing on mindbending patterns" of the 1880s and the crazy wasteage of the 20thC with bias cut things.
This historic stuff is something I highly recommend people to look into. It really helps with being able to pattern crazy fantasy costumes and many movie people use the main historic sources for their work. Also great for thinking outside the box in terms of how to cut fabric to best advantage and have people wonder how you did it ;) You can mix and blend elements from each period and make soemthing completely new. Again, this happens for the movies and tv all the time. |

| Woot!
So first question is how much notice do people's need? Should it work in around holidays?
I am going to be a tad busy in September with judging of trash to Fashion (possibly, having a meeting soon about that) so maybe July/August would eb good?
I will need to plan out how to do this so preferably a month would be good to do so ;) I think going epoch by epoch then a basic garment for each would be good. Well basic.. the typical style say and then at the end a few examples of the atypical ;) What to look for in terms of basic shapes etc. |

| Around holidays would be good, or possibly around events - but that would be a pretty massive workload! Er, as someone who will be traveling from wellington - about a month's notice would be great, if not a little bit more. This is just my wallet speaking, but that would be great lol. |

| No chance of a session at or around CF or Nov Crown if you are attending either? Just for the South Islanders. Got to be cheaper for us to fly you down that all of us to go up?
Now to talk William or somebody else into the shoe/leather thing at the same time! And we have local smiths/prop makers, could turn this into an little event.
PS. I think agate might be back by then, if you need any more motivation. I really should talk to her again, before she leaves. |

| Ooooh~ I'd be really interested in this! It's really hard to find information that can be trusted on historical clothing, especially about accurate construction. I was recently looking up ancient greek clothing to check something for an assignment, and as simple as that particular clothing is (rectangles yay), different sources definitely have their own take on things! And to say nothing of my bustle research >.< The age of the internet, huh. |

| I should point out that there is a trained experienced seamstress in Christchurch who does historial re-enactment and takes commissions. I would have to query her, but I don't think she would turn down a paying commission. |

| *excellent*
Next step, any particular areas of history people are interested? I'm guessing the usual suspects of renaissance and 19thC periods (covering a huge swathe of fashion right there!) |

Re: Historic costume advice/guides/what have you By neimhaille. 15/06/09, 06:11 am |
| http://www.waitakere.govt.nz/ArtCul/ae/trashtofashion/schoolsinfo.asp I'm going to busy those dates (I'll be judging this year :) ) but I have had some more interest from my SCA friends and there is also a group who do historic dancing who may be interested in a weekend workshop too (there is a quadrille workshop next weekend).
So I can either make a booking for the first two weeks of August or last week of September. I'm worried about the latter because it may clash with people wanting to save money for Auck'Geddon (flights etc) so please let me know any preferences everyone :) I am optioning a few places to do this. I may be able to time it so that we can make things on the Saturday and wear 'em on Sunday to Howick or MOTAT.
I suspect a Victorian workshop is going to be the best to start with as Madam Chair of the Winnowed Spinach Tea Society I have a bit of an obligation to promote this wide ranging era ;) |

| Seeing the interest in the Victorian Garb, and Balls in general in on CNZ I have started a thread in the usergroups; CCC., promoting a new Victorian Dance group. Gives people in Christchurch a way to learn, and a goal of a Ball to work towards, both learning dance, and sewing! Slightly off topic here, but hopefullynear enough that Christchurch people who are interested will know it is on. For more details see the thread, and PM me, and I will give you Nataliyas Email address so you can get on the email list. |
