Hi - from an older guy in Christchurch.

I'm a (much) older guy, coming from a more traditional Science Fiction background. I've never been heavily into cosplay, but (for absolutely no adequately explained reason) I've developed a great interest in the making of props and costumes.

Now, because I'm an engineer (and no longer a penurious student) I also have tools; tools for working wood, metal, plastic, leather, and electronics. Because I'm a packrat, I also have lots of 'bits'; a box of leather offcuts and dismantled opshop garments, rolls of fabric that looked interesting for 'something', boxes of jewellery beads, sheets of styrene, alginate and plaster for lifecasting (which my wife and I do a bit of for fun), and bits from dismantled machines that were saved just because they were strange and unusual shapes. I also have a 3 car garage and no room for car in it. :-(

I would be flat-out delighted to help other people with props and costumes. I could get the fun of making stuff and I'm happy to leave others to the wearing of it.

So,

What sort of materials do inhabitants of this 'candy-mountain tumour' like to work with?

One of my current projects is a Victorian / Alien hybrid piece of scientific equipment (from about 1910, the period just after H G Wells' "The War of the Worlds" when the Martians had died off and humans were trying to adapt the alien technology left behind). Thats wood, brass, glass, wires, plaster of paris, bits of chopped up plastic spiders, some crab pincers washed up on New Brighton beach, bits of a 'koosh' ball dyed black (for tentacles) and I'm not sure what else.

I'm not too used to working with fabric but I do have a various bits and I bought a new sewing machine last year so my daughters could sew costumes for Armageddon 2008.

Oh, did I mention, I also have two (2) fifteen year old daughters. Mad keen anime and manga fans. I don't think it will take much to get them into cosplay. Smile

Lots! For me, fabric is my forte - I've been a bit nervous about doing props so far, and haven't branched out much past craft foam, beadwork and a bit of sculpting for brooches and stuff I couldn't find anywhere.

If you would gladly have the knowledge to make a custom-specified cleaver, I would be interested in asking for a commission of sorts. :)

Not to start with. But, once I've tried a few experiments, I might be interested. I've had a few ideas along the lines of making swords etc that I'd like to try.

Just remember most cosplay people are not to be trusted with anything that may hurt anybody, or so the theory goes. I different, as in SCA/UCMRS. But I can give you an contact for thornforge if you want to learn to actually make metal knives, etc. He seems happy to welcome people into his forge to teach them to make there own stuff. Presumably at a cost though.

PS. I am going to talk to a workmate sometime about a professional (Film/TV/LOTR) prop maker in ChCh who has a CNC machine. Could cut medium density? (automotive?) foam to exactly as drawn. Hard enough to stay ridgid, but will break before any real damage to anybody? But thats just third hand, so I wil see.
