Can I dye this purple wig?
By Squishy blob. 11/05/09, 03:23 am |
| I've found a bright-ish purple wig, but I need it to match Yuki nagato's colour. I was thinking about using the acrylic paint wig dye technique to give it a silver/grey tint, but I've never done it before. The purple is like Cosworx's H. Purple http://www.cosworx.com/pages.php?pageid=7 (yes, it's quite bright). And I'm trying not to buy from the internet. I'll try to put up some reference pics once I get home (I'm at school). Any help would be nice. Suggestions, criticism, anything. Does the acrylic paint method completely colour or just tint? Would FW ink dye work? ( it comes in silver) Should I STOP BEING CHEAP and buy the wig off the web? |

| You can't dye a wig lighter (or less bright.. unless you're going darker), unfortunately ^^; Your best bet is to get a silver wig and tint it purple. |

| DARN. oh well, I'll look for a silver/white wig then. But does the acrylic paint thing actually work? |

| Like, painting on a wig? o_o; Nonononono. It will just make your wig crusty and gross. If you want to dye a wig, there are two ways - the sharpie method (where you can either manually colour the whole wig by hand with a sharpie, or you can extract the ink from the sharpie and mix it with Isopropyl alcohol to make a spray dye) or the Acrylic ink (is this what you meant?) method (where you mix acrylic ink -- not paint! -- with Isopropyl Alcohol to make a spray die).
I've only used the Acrylic Ink method myself, but I know Aura has hand-sharpie died several wigs and that's worked well for her. I found the Acrylic Ink method to be very effective - the hardest part was just getting enough Isopropyl Alcohol (I think it's used in the manufacture of P or something, so it's hard to buy in large quantities). With a colour like Yuki's, you might be better off trying the Acrylic Ink method, as it's easier to mix custom colours than it is with sharpies. :3 |

| Ack! yeah, I was confused about the paint thing too. I only heard about it on cosplay.com and a wikihow. Anyway thanks! by the looks of it I'll just be getting it off the net then. I don't even know if I'm doing yuki for sure- The MoHS group is still being sorted out.
Thank you. |

| I was talking to minifries the other day, and they say they are not able to get much by the way of green wigs from their suppliers now. However they suggested a blond wig, and a green spray can. I will check out cosworx because I did not like the possibility of actually styling this particular wig, which I thought would be too thin after trimming, and too cheap to really style properly. Of course being my first day buying wigs i'm not really sure. But would a readymade spray can have done the trick blond>green. |

| Yes, it's used in the making of P. I tried to buy iso a little while ago, I had to show my driver's license and they took down my details, then charged me 6.50 for a physics 50ml bottle. Then I found out Jp managed to get a 500ml bottle for $17. Clearly being a career geek has its advantages! |

...seeing as everyone else has just read the OP, lol, which is dated over a month ago, I'll just casually point out that people should endeavor to read the most recent post as well as the OP, lol.
In any case: By green spray can do they mean spray wig dye, or the temporary spray hair colour stuff? If it's the latter, I wouldn't touch it with an 80 foot pole - that stuff is crunchy, flakes, and generally nasty looking. It MIGHT be okay with a hairstyle that's rigid, spikey, and not MEANT to move, but if you wanted naturally moving hair, then it's not gunna work out for you. The colour spray is also a hairspray, so...
Rather than go for the colour spray, I'd be more inclined to buy a platinum blonde wig (or as white as you can get) and use one of the various wig dying methods on it - either sharpie or acrylic ink dying. I personally recommend acrylic ink dying, as you can have more control over shade than with a sharpie, but people have had good success with both methods. |

| Thanks JVCA. They said it was more colour than hairspray, but would have limited effect as a hairspray. Anyway it is just down the block so I can go and have another look. But if I find a wig that I am happy with then maybe I will get someone to make sure I do this right. We have a art workshop available to the ccc sometimes now, thanks to Sakura. |
