| The 4-point shuriken?
- Spoiler:
I can give a few suggestions on what to try for this while keeping it simple. I have included construction details because I feel it's better if I give you an idea on why I chose the materials. I also apologise for any errors as I have just gotten off work - I started at 9pm last night.
MDF Board (the compressed sawdust looking sheets). The whole shuriken can be cut out of this and blades shaped and sanded. Use a dust mask and eye protection as the resins in some boards can be harmful.
Plywood (3 layers minimun, 5 maximum) and: 1) Clay. Cut out your shuriken as normal, but cut you blades a good half inch in each side. Remember to sand as well! To make the blades use a quality air drying clay (like Das Modelling Clay) to shape them. Use small amounts at a time, keeping the main block of clay covered in a plastic bag. Keep a bowl of water on hand as well to smooth out the clay you are moulding. Try to keep the angles on the blade low so you as little clay as possible, as the clay can be heavier the wood!
Once the clay is dry you can sand out or dremel any imperfections and smooth any gaps with more clay.
2 Foamcore/Foamboard Start by gluing together your sheets and letting them dry (this may take a few days). Keep the amount of sheets even. By doing this it'll make your blade edge straight, because it's where the 2 sheets meet. Draw a line down the middle on the top and bottom layers of foamcore and cut the foam on your angle CAREFULLY and SLOWLY. Make sure your blade is always sharp so it doesn't tear the foam. I've included a crude picture to try and further clarify.
- Spoiler:
If you wish the clean up the 'flat' pieces of the blades spread across minimal amounts of plaster or clay and sand lightly with a very fine grit sand paper
You can cut and sand the "grips" out of ply and stick on your blades with liquid nails, or make "spines" and carefully skewer them on.
If you want to use the same colour scheme on the example I provided, give me a yell. Painting metals is my "speciality" at the moment. |

| Pretty sure everything's been covered in the above post but thought that I'd add (having made one for my own Yuffie cosplay) that it's REALLY handy to make it in 6 detachable pieces. Have 4 blades and 2 circles on each side of the blades in the centre to just hold everything together. That way it means you can cart it on & off planes with no hassles.
As for the materials thing - I highly recommend using MDF. Easy to work with & if you buy a sheet you can use it for multiple projects.
But yes; everything has been covered thoroughly by Tigurius so you should have no troubles at all! Slightly envious that I didn't have the amazingo advice when I made my shuriken. But such is life! |

Re: Yuffie's huge suriken? *help* By Kat. 10/06/09, 07:05 am |
| three sheets of ply wood glued together then cut and shape then fiber glass and resin it and paint the fiber glass and resin should help it look more like metal and stop the wood grain showing threw
and if you made a sash or harness(think ac yuffie wears one) you could put clip on the back and you dont have to hold it the whole time |

| Guys, this is from almost two months ago. I have a funny feeling that they don't need the help anymore... n_n; Please keep an eye on the date of the last post when posting in a thread that's halfway down the page - they're usually dead threads for a reason, and resurrecting them without good cause is called "necroing" and against our forum rules. :3 If anyone is confused, I'm more than happy to clarify. n_n |
