Too old to Cosplay? By CarnivalChild. 12/01/09, 10:44 am |
| After a post-ball conversation at u_ne_korn's, I have some questions, How old are you and how old were you when you started cosplaying? How old is too old to cosplay and why?

| 19 now, 16 when I did Riff Raff. I'm have no idea when it becomes a case of 'too old to cosplay", but definitely "too old to cosplay as insertnamehere", or even too young, depending on the character you're portraying. |

| I am currently 17 and I am starting to feel too old for some of the attendees however it seems as though there are two distinct groups of cosplayers the old people and the young uns unfortunately i fit smack bang in the middle of them |

| 14 when I first cosplayed, 16 now. I think the age depends on who you are cosplaying. |

| I am 21 and I started the research side of Cosplaying when I was 14, and the make side of cosplay when I was 19... I don't think there is such thing as too old to cosplay...but then again, if I see an 80 year old overweight man cosplaying the 1960's Batman, then I will have to change my mind...

| I think it's a matter of "you're as young as you feel". I started cosplaying when I was 20, took a few years off due to real life intruding and am now 24. I don't think I'll ever stop due to age. I might stop due to real life and other commitments increasing with age though, or because I stop finding it fun.
It could be more a matter of if everyone who cosplays around you is much younger than you you'll feel out of place. For a while, I was the oldest of the socialising cosplayers in Wellington (as oppossed to those who cosplayed but never came to any event except 'Geddon) by a large margin, and I felt really quite out of place. But the in-between gap has filled now and I have a lot more fun.
I can't find the photo of the 82 year old Rikku in a zimmer frame, only a bad photoshop of it. It's a pretty awesome cosplay actually.
Also, I don't think age is a factor for which cosplays you "should" do anymore than height or real hair colour. People cosplay characters older than themselves ALL THE TIME, whats wrong with cosplaying younger. But I do think it still comes under "make sure it looks good on you". Middle age spread is nothing to be ashamed of, but it shouldn't be combined with spandex except under the most extra-ordinary of circumstances! |

The irony is that this topic came from your vocal concern over the concept of 20something as the benchmark of old. "Stop saying that 26 is old! I'm already 24." lol. |

| Ha. I just realised that my previous post didn't explain anything. *headdesk* Well, age is another one of those height kinda things. If the character has something about them that makes them them and is significant in the anime/manga/whatever then if you're the complete opposit (think Man Faye .__.) then it could be weird. But I think that some of the older Wellington people make really good cosplays. Who cares about the age? It's about fun ;DD |

| I'm currenly 21 and I started cosplaying when I was 14.... I Don't think you can be too old for cosplay, as long as you are alive there is always room for cosplay, you just have to know what to cosplay XD Heck my mum and I Have a plan to try and do a cosplay together at one point and by the time we get round to it she would be just shy of 50. |

| I feel young! But I so often find people going "Argh, I'm twenty. I'm practically DEAD" on these forums it makes me feel old. So I compensate by hanging out with 16 year olds and playing stuck-in-the-mud :) I feel for jp. Plus I was legally asleep so anything said while you were at mine should not be considered binding. |

| Im 17 now and i think its the optimum age for cosplaying xDDD but This year's cosplay will probably be my last..for a while, coz of Uni next year and everything...but how old is too old?? well i personally think it depends on what cosplaying means to you, and what you get out of it. but if were to say... i think 20 something is the limit for cosplay, unless you are one of those people who look younger than their age...but i guess its different for eveyone~
and oh yeah i started cosplaying when i was 15 8D |

| I'm 20 (21 in like a month) and I started cosplaying when I was 19. I don't think age matters at all. If you want to do it, do it; if you don't then don't. My height kinda works in my favor, so I appear younger than I am...
Personally, I see myself cosplaying for many years to come. |

| I'm 20, and I by no means feel too old to cosplay...
When/if I stop it'll be 'cause it's no longer fun for me~ (though I hope I still get to see you fun people even after that.) When exactly will that be? you ask... I have no idea.... |

Re: Too old to Cosplay? By Static. 12/01/09, 03:53 pm |
| Bah, you're never too old for cosplay. I started when I was about 14, and am now 20 (21 in three months, holy crap...) and will stop when I lose interest, and not before. The only area age affects cosplayers is how they interact with other cosplayers - if you're way out of your age group (or even a little bit out) if you don't feel like you fit in, you won't. If you do, you will - simple!
...also, age-specific cosplays. If anybody under 17 tries to wander around in a bikini, there'd be some harsh words had... |

| mmm i only reeally started cosplaying last year, when i was 14. well i still am, but yknow
i think cosplayers 19+ have a rep to make their costumes reeally good, like everything perfect. like i was reading this article about cosplaying my mum gave me the other day, and most of the cosplayers were actually late 20s early 30s. yeah.
my dad wants to cosplay 8DDDD |

Re: Too old to Cosplay? By KotoneVersus. 12/01/09, 05:38 pm |
| I've only started cosplaying. I started when I was fifteen, but now I'm sixteen and I'm far too lazy to make any more.
I think it's better if you're older. You put more effort into cosplay because of experience and because you don't have school or anything to concentrate on (not that I'm actually concentrating on school >____>).
But then again...work. Ick.
So little time to make decent cosplays. Dx |
