From a Hamiltonian - What can i do in CHCH

Hey CHCH-ers, at the end of june (26/6/09 - 2/7/09) my flatmate and i are going to chch for a week and neither of us have ever really been before (well not since i was 5 years old). I was wondering from the people in the know what are awesome places we could go or things we can do in chch and where???

are there any cool anime, manga, gaming or interesting stores places to shop???

i would love any help figuring out what would be the best things to do, and i hope not to get too lost in the process Razz

we are both staying in the city for the week and only have use of public transport, any help or suggestions at all would be great

The comic book shop? it's pretty cool...Um, battle link (it's a gaming place,, so much fun, but very nerdy) Normal places to go, like the museum, one of our two zoos (They're great you should go) maybe the antartctic centre...

OR! If the CCC is having an event you could come to that! or we could have one in honor of you coming to this fair city! 83

Think more later when I have more time. But there is a bus which you pay once, then it follows a circuit. You get off at an attraction, take as much time as you want, then wait for the next bus to turn up, and take you to the next attraction. Includes the antartic exhibition, air force world, etc

I am sure some of us could also show you around, cars being faster way to do all things, except certain inner city places. Do you like mini-golf, we have a few cool themed ones outdoors, and the best most challenging one, with awesome models, but it is indoors and costs more. A good evening thing. More later.

Yes we have two zoo's, Willowbank wildlife reserve and Orana park. But they are on the ouskirts of town, or beyond. Better with a car.

The musem, the art gallery, arts center, and botanic garden are all 1 block from each other. They are easy walking distance from either the bus exchange, or the square. Most buses stop in the square as well. If you walk west from the square you will find an tourist information center. There is the catherdral in the square, including climbing the bell tower. And there are a couple of scupltures, in the square, and high street. There is an aquarium in the square (SW corner) if you like those things. So there are plenty of things in the city center to keep you busy a day or two which you can walk to. With the free shuttle bus, or walking you can reach most fabric/comic, etc shops.

However some of the great sites are longer bus rides or better car trips away.

Like $10-20? for the good one. Need a car to reach it, but it is open nights. But when are you coming then, dates please?

June = 6th month

Why not do stuff you can't do where your currently live.

How about a ride on the gondala or tram? Check out ferrymead or go to Hamner springs. It's only an hours drive to ski at Mt Hutt (if you can afford it!)

Tram from the square, and it will show you part of the city, and get you to other attractions. eg the gardens, arts center, art gallery, I think. Ferrymead is a historic theme park/musem and is ment to be very good. Now why don't we set aside the 28th as a day to drive somewhere. To orana park, or other local attractions, or weather permitting to arthurs pass or lewis pass/Hamner Hot pools or Maruia Springs.

If you think you're going to be catching the bus at least a few times in the entire trip, I would highly recommend getting a metro card (it will save you a lot of money in only one week) they're free (you have to load $10 on it to start with), but it basically means that you save about 50c each time you catch the bus, and you can only ever be charged twice in one day to catch the bus (even if you catch it 50 times).

I.e. normal price is $2.80, you get one transfer ticket

with metro card, $2.20 then any bus you catch for the next two hours is free, and you can only be charged once again after that two hours. The most you pay in one day is $4.40

(my pricing might be off by a little, but you get the picture) :)

Only downside is you have to keep it loaded and can only add $10 minimum at a time,

There is a tourist info thing at 15-31 Cathedral Square apparently. www.christchurchnz.com

Also we have several go karts and also indoor paintball (and outdoor too) as well as laser strike. But you probably have those in hamilton too.

I figure that you could visit everything in the inner city yourself, and even bus out to Ferrymead historic park, or Sumner or New Brighton. And the tourist bus which will get you around the antartic center, etc.

But given I have only Sunday, maybe sat moring, but don't count on it, to drive you around. (Unless you want a historic feast evening Saturday night?) And you must check out the arts market (arts center) on Saturday too! Then just think of wether you want to go to the arthurs pass or lewis pass (hot pools.) cause it's your only chance to get out of town. Or you could take the tourist train over to the coast one day? Expensive but very good. I could fit another two people in too. Unless anybody else comes with a car.

Or there is the port hills, and the historic takahe trail, orana park (www.oranawildlife park.co.nz), willowbank wildlife reserve, Akaroa a little french town around the peinisula, or whatever else locally.

Or another idea is to get a bunch of cosplayers together for battle chess in the square, and then tea, and then off to caddyshack for an evening of minigolf?

So shall we invite everybody/somebodies to meet somewhere on Sun? Like tea at 5pm at somewhere? or 4pm for battlechess in the square (if we can get enough people)? If we get plenty of people shall we book into caddyshack or somewhere else for the evening?
