Cheap Sewing Machine - Brother BM2600

hrm, ok, my old thread appears to have disappeared.

Same thing as last time, Harvey Norman has the BM-2600 on special 'again'.
It was either $169 or $189, I can't remember off the top of my head.

Edit: hrm, ok, found one of my old threads, the search didn't come up with it the first few times. anyways. Mods - any preference on this kinda post in general discussion, or marketplace? Does marketplace officially include 'Stuff on Sale' ?

STOP!!! ok i sell sewing machines and i know the temptation of being broke and buying cheep but dont be fooled.
most of those cheep brothers wont last a decent amount of sewing and it costs more for them to get fixed than it doest to buy an new one.
I sujest if you want a good affordible (not tocheep) sewing machine a Janome 521. it will do 9layers of denim if you ask it nice and put in the right needle. if you need cheeper than that a singer 1108 and there is another janome that is cheep and decent but i cant remeber the number.
also 2nd hand is an alright way to go if you know it works. but remeber if it a brother over 8 years old or a bernina or husqvarna 20+ you wont get parts. it is cheeper to buy new these days simply because of fixing cost, and were ever you buy it from make sure they can follow up service (repairs, advice etc) i hate to plug my work but www.sewingdirect.co.nz we will look after you. you can call us for anything and we are open 7days.

I know this is kinda an old thread, but my beloved Captn Jack (Yes, that's is my sewing Machine's name) is a Brother BM2600. He is amazing. Sure there are days where he is a pain in the ass and I have to redo tension and rethread five times to get everything working properly, but most of the time he's really good. Had him since the middle of 06.

This machine has made it through at least 6 cosplays, a bajillion repairs, 10 other garments and an entire production's wardrobe (Victoria University's Journey to the West... I think all the costumes were sewn on Jack minus the pants). I'm neither a nice or gentle sewer, my cosplay making time includes a ton of swear words- but my machine is still running wonderfully with the slightly rough treatment.

Toooootally recommend this machine to anyone. It's wonderful for a basic machine.

i've used a bm2600 until last year, and while i agree, the tension is gigantic PAIN IN THE ASS, i guess it's a good starter machine for people because it hasn't got many bells and whistles etc. it's also been fairly reliable, no mechanical breakages and all needle snaps were my own fault. LOL

I conned my Dad into getting me the BM2600...hehe

Its good so far, have only used to to make a Dress for a friend...but it is about to have the true test of making a Corset, and hemming Yellow Chiffon...mmmuuuhhhhhhhaaaaa

I borrowed JP's BM3600 Brother machine and I spent the entire time wishing for my Bernina. It's a Bernette 50 which I'm told is kinda crap but I love it dearly. Love it so much more than silly Vespa.

brother are interesting as a brand. they have some absolutely amazing little machines but about 60% are crap. (I'm going off what comes in to get replaced and repaired)
my biggest issue is that a: the inner are mostly plastic and fiberglass so its actually cheaper to buy a new one that to get parts for them
and b: they only stock their parts for up to 8 yrs. which limits the life to that long. and personally i think a sewing machine should last you 15 to 20.
How ever they are going to be the cheapest because our moneys still good against china. and all the other brands have risen their prices by heaps!
which bite the big kumara. the other thing is i like my feet my 1/4" and my walking foot especially and thats why i go janome, Cheeper accessories and parts
