man, that storm today was freaking awesome. There was snow on columbo st, and some streets were flooded so badly water was almost comming in the door of my car! anyone got photos?

lol I was just gonna start a thread!

I wish I did. The cloud formations were amazing!
We got three storms (well probably just one but the thunder seemed to start and stop), I got electrocuted and the whole place flooded up to 15-30cm (around that) in places.
...

it was SO AWESOME!

what was really cool, was that I was surrounded by metal and steel outside soaking wet in the middle of it, ^^;;
you could feel the electricity in the air, it was just wow... just... wow.

At 10.30 I noticed the clouds were really building high, so I wondered if there would be a storm. It was so sunny and at 12 it was SO HOT!
The first storm hit us at 1pm. We had so much thunder and a huge downpoor (that wasn't THE flood though.)
I got electrocuted ... well more just a shock... a pretty big one though lol by the gate handle to the paddock, it went right through my hand and arm >>
I love this job but not enough to die for... while I was out there I was just thinking: "Angela died from being struck by lightning while she was ~~picking up dog doo~~ working."
(we were both bringing the dogs back in from the yards, and at the same time picking up their little presents for us.)
Second storm hit at around 3? Lots of lightning, a little hail but nothing to big. Like seriously 10 bits of hail during a minute and it stopped and was sunny.
Then the last storm came at 4.30ish? It hailed. It hailed so hard the size of marbles I guess, and so fast! Everything was white oO and thats what caused the flood. Its such a good thing that the dogs kennels were a little higher then the ground, so they only got half wet. I ran around all 100+ dogs (I can't remember how many we have) to make sure their kennels weren't getting flooded... the little dog section almost did we had to turn on the pump and pump the water out. The water was FREEZING. I had my hand in for 1 minute to clear the drain and my hand came out numb.

It was so epic though!

edit: Oh even more wow, there was a waterspout at Sumner! :grin:

Yup, and well this day is full of surprises, a huge ufo just flew across the sky. o___O;;
20 minutes ago people have reported seeing a big white uh 'thing' that traveled slowly towards the hills for 5 minutes.

It was pretty random. It was sunny one moment and then next moment it was a Thunder & Lighting storm.
Then sunny- then a second Thunder Storm

Don't know why it said on the News that Sumner was 'treated '' to a waterspout. If it was the real deal, it problery would of killed them all..

Well not all tornado's are killers ^^ specially not NZ's ones. We usually get the weaker kind (when we get them) so lucky for us =D
(apparently there was a couple forming near the hills? But they never touched the ground. I wasn't there to see them so I'm not sure if they really were =P)
and yeah that was what was so strange about the storms today oO

Yes, it was far too big too be a plane, or a satelite, so who knows, could have been a comet or a meteor? It was either very close to earth or was very big in size, or both...
I might contact the observatory tomorrow and see if they know what it was.
Its not your usual night sky event thats forsure... you can see meteors, comets etc all the time but never this big or this slow... hms.
(yes I'm also an astronomy freak xD)

Tornado's are still pretty dangerous weather though. Maybe not killed, but just knocked out and injured ?

Oh yeah they can be, one of the worst!
I guess it just depends on the situation and the people. If the tornado's weak, and people are indoors then the only damage that could be caused would be to the roof and gardens, and probably trees, windows. If people are outside then... well thats another story oO;

I've been watching too many storm chasers documentries on sky Razz

Possibly hahah, well we kinda have an idea where their home base might be, somewhere near the hills. xD

I like watching storms but I wouldn't want to be caught in the middle of one! pale

We didn't get snow here (I live in Richmond) or flooding at least not from what I could see. You sure seem to like storms Angie! Wink

I prefer warm weather myself, cold, gloomy weather makes me want to go into hibernation, probably comes with being born in the summer and all.

I was watching a movie all through it XD
I did notice 'Oh, rain. Lightening. Thunder. Hail. More rain. Clothes outside must be wet... what will I wear tomorrow -something exciting happens in the movie- All attention to the TV'

Are you sure it was snow though, hail can be mistaken for snow (once its settled on the ground.) Then again the weather was mental yesterday ;P
Did you guys read the press, like over 1000 lightning bolts thanks to the multiple storms o_O I missed most of the lightning, saw so many flashes. My brother who was outside of work (which actually lost power or something) said the lightning was amazing.

Haha yeah, I’d be a storm chaser overseas lol…
I've seen one (or at least think I did) outside Timaru ages ago, I can't remember if it was touching the ocean or not though. I remember there was a huge one in Auckland once xD
Also in the middle of nowhere we drove past 4 huge whirlwinds that were around 5 stories or more high. It was so freaky-looking as there were no clouds at all, and they were just so high, but it was very awesome.

at my workplace, the main lights went out for about 15 mins or so. most of my fellow checkout operators were half glad it wasn't the machines (but also half pissed it wasn't the machines)

Wow, I must have had it pretty mild ....

It was hot for most of the day, and then in the late afternoon we got some thunder and lightning.

Oh and it hailed pretty hard for a while, but that was about it. xD

We got TONS of lightning and hail and rain at my flat. (It actually killed our internet/phoneline... ) and it was raining/hailing so hard that I had to pull over in my car 'cause I couldn't see....

but afterwards, my flatmates and I went for a drive (through the puddles) and there was one bit where the water across the whole road was covering half the wheels of my car.
Us had fuuuunnn driving through puddles!

(Oh~ Will... you know that phone you sold my flatmates and I? Do we get a refund if it's killed by lightning?)
