Pretty Much the same as JVCA, but with R4-ing. By Freddie. 13/12/08, 04:18 am |
| Pretty mu8ch, i need to know the pros cons of an R4 for my DS.
Plus some questions. Do i need two R4's for 2 DS consols? or just two memory sticks? How much memory would you reccomend? What games should i get? Does it screw with my DS at all?
And uhhh.... Is there a programme to play downloaded roms on my computer?

| I'll start off by saying that the R4 is basically just a game card the shape of a DS game that holds a small memory stick in it. You put it in your DS like any other game and when you start up the DS it runs the OS from the R4 card rather than the normal DS one. So unlike the PSP in which you crack by playing around with the settings and firmware with a special battery one time only you actually need to use the R4 card in your DS as if it was the game itself.
1. Well that depends, I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. Will you be using both DS' at the same time for multi-card multiplayer? If two DS are needing to use the R4 at the same time you'll need two R4 with a memory stick for both. However if you and another person are just going to share the R4 and play separately then you'll just need 2 memory sticks. Of course that means when that R4 is being used by someone else you won't be able to play it, since, you know, it won't be inside your DS.
2. 2GB memory stick is pretty good and should give you enough room for games and mp3s and such, I only have a 1GB one so I only a small amount of games on mine.
3. This really depends on what games you're wanting to play but can't import/buy.
4. No, if you take the R4 out of your DS and put a normal DS game in there, it'll run like normal. The R4 OS is run entirely from the memory stick inside the card itself, although I will also note that in order for the R4 to run you'll actually need to download the OS for it when you get it. How to do so can be easily found on the net.
Hope that helps. |

Yes, called emulators. Look up no$GBA.
IcyRose pretty much has the questions down.
If you're just aiming to play pirated games, the R4 does the job fine. It's widely popular, so "online support" isn't far off. They're easy enough to use and they go for $60-70.
The bottom line is they do their job with satisfaction. Just like any other flashcard.
Below the line is the game side. Every now and then, there are games that come out with piracy protection. The most recent one was the highly anticipated re-released Chrono Trigger. Well, at the end of the day (or week in this case), there was a ROM patch released so every flashcard could work around this barrier but before it, almost all flashcard were useless.
This is the main problem of flashcards, you don't know if they can failproof play all future games. It's a minor one but it's there nonetheless. |

| R4's are amazing, mine has never been taken out of my ds since I got it.
Too bad flashcards don't work in the dsi, I kinda wanted one of those...
Also, depending on the quality and size of your microsd card it may freeze on the more graphic intensive games, but most games run without problem. |

I saved myself the curiosity hassle and went with something that had built-in memory, personally. =/
