Katara's necklace

Alright, so, i need so advice on how to create Katara's necklace. I've seen a few ways to do it, or i could just purchase one, but i would like to make it myself.
I found a tutorial on how to make it out of wax, but that seems like an easy way out. There are also wooden buttons you can use and one of my friends even suggested using a metal disc that you can engrave pet names onto, if i can find one large enough.
Any more ideas out there? Can you elaborate on any of the ones that i have? All help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
