Choice of cosplay

As a newbie, I just wanted to collect a few people's thoughts on what is their main consideration(s) in choosing to cosplay a character.

This is really just an expansion of Static's thread of "Character vs Sweet Costume"
which I found really interesting, but then I thought of why I'm considering
doing Rude from FFVII, and my answer is that I could cosplay him very easily -which
didn't ofcourse fit Static's thread. Then I thought maybe there are other reasons
that affect choice.

My biggest consideration of a cosplay is "Do I like the character?" It's no fun dressing up as a character you despise in my opinion. After that it's "How possible is it for me to make this cosplay?" or alternatively "Can I find a decent looking commission that's also affordable on eBay (Damn you Dynasty Warriors cosplays! Too difficult and too expensive!) or can I make this up from clothes I already have?"

So really for me it's a mater of liking the character and being able to make/find the costume. I suppose the final part of my consideration is whether I can find another person who would cosplay another character from the same series. Cosplaying in a group is just more fun.

IcyRose pretty much spoke for me as well, though I have cosplayed a couple of characters I didn't really like only cause I was asked by friends to cosplay as that character for their group, (peer pressure, well not really,) I accept cause its really fun to be in groups =3
Usually the most important is if I like the character, since I like to act rather then make =P at the moment anyway.

I'm with Aura on this one!

At CHCHGeddon I cosplayed the oh-so-wonderful undead Kikyo-sama, who has no emotions and is ~~oh-so-evil~~ as fun as a dead fish.
This was next to impossible for me to keep in character with. I am just not that kind of person. ~~and I even hope that I'm slightly more fun that a dead fish at a party. XP~~

Yeah, I'm with Aura mostly too lol. Im only i the Sailor Moon group forAuckgeddon next year 'cuz I love group cosplay - the fact that I quite like the costume/character is a bonus. Although I do have to say that if I'm the only Starlight, I quit...I refuse to be the only one showing belly. I'll get abused by small children again, and nobody likes that...

Hmm... I hate crossplaying. Like hate it. If I had the money, I'd buy proper equipment and see if that makes any difference, but for now no male cosplays for me >>;

So generally, I've been looking at the group threads and picking the female characters I like, with costumes think I can make. I like being in groups haha, I think it's more fun!

AND PEOPLE -- BE A STARLIGHT WITH STATIC? PLEEEEASE? ;A;

"Does my body type suit the character?" Is my first question followed by, "Do I look like them at all?" and then it goes to "Can I make their outfit???"
I don't mind cosplaying characters that I don't know much about 'cause I always have research but I prefer to choose characters I'm fond of.
I also take "Would I make the character look bad?" into some consideration LOL
I'm quite flexible with the price but of course, I don't SEEK expensive cosplay. Male characters are though for me because of boobs... but I will crossplay anyways.

* I WAS going to go as Starlight Fighter but was like "NO MORE SHINY VINYL PLEASE TAT!!!" so yeah ^^;

I so know what you mean about body type... I am big-boned by nature, and slightly older than most people here so when looking at the groups, I am currently looking for characters that match this- but there doesn't seem to be many.
That's really why I picked Rude.
But I hear what you mean about group cosplays... they sound so much better.

myeahh i think its quite important that you physically resemble the character in some sort of way~ thats an important aspect of a good cosplay lol xD

and then its whether you like the character or not, and is the costume makable / affordable xDDD

and when crossplaying...its kinda tricky xD coz some girls can make really good guys and some girls cant @w@ and vise versa with guys xDD

It's good to have some sort of resemblance to your character. Cuz there's some character's some people just shouldn't cosplay, no matter how cool/fun they are.. DX
Also how comfortable you are with the character. I wouldn't be able to cosplay someone showing lots of skin. >.<

I agree with what most of you are saying, I think it looks waaay better if you actually have the same height/shape/looks of the character you're cosplaying. I'm happy with being short so I can cosplay all the cute short characters ^^

My three factors are: Looks/Likes/Obscurity

Like said the first step is really 'Do I look like the character at all?' Having very long wavy brown hair meant that Nephrite was quite doable(Unfortunately I am not anorexic and tall like all the Sailor moon characters though). Otherwise, Mask/wig/hat = Red Mage. No much ressemblance necessary Razz

The other main factors are 'Do I like the character enough to want to cosplay them?' followed by 'How can I be different? How can my cosplay be special?'. Those last two are my reasons for working on my Alex (Golden Sun) cosplay this summer. Golden Sun is fantastic, Alex is fantastic.
