Fabric choices for a Queen.

So, with my last idea for the WCB falling through, I'm sussing out other options (most of which not needing wigs XD) and I came upon this:

She is the Evil Queen from Ludwig Kakumei, and it looks to me like her dress is made of wet-look vinyl. I have a couple of problems with this. Firstly - both my sewing machine and I will shoot ourselves in the head before trying to work with that much vinyl without a substantial monetary incentive. Seriously, NO. A vinyl gown of this volume will also be hell and a half to wear - I'd be sweating like a piggy, smell really bad, and probably be all red in the face and grumpy as shite.

So - any reccommendations? I was thinking about matte satin, but not only is that really expensive, I'd like something with a little more shine - but not as much as regular satin. Taffeta? I'd like to avoid brocade, because I intend to make the corset from that and I want to keep a bit of contrast between gown and corset.

Soooo...any thoughts? Suggestions? Cries of, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT VINYYYYYLLLLL!!!!"? Suspect

Ha! Wetlook vinyl gown. *giggles to self at the insanity*

It looks like it needs to be pretty stiff, unless you're gonna put some hoops in it (or it's just this picture. Thats the problem with designing outfits from pictures that have never been anywhere near real life...). Or is she just hiking it up with her hands?

That stuff they sell ooodles of at Spotlight, for making ball dresses out of. Thats's pretty shiney, but does it come in black? (Or is it not actually black?) If you starch it up, would that make it stiff?

I dunno. My sewing theory is squat - I choose fabric by starting at Arthur Toye and wandering up to Spotlight via that weird wharehouse of fabric with a handful of reference pics and then buying what looks best on my budget out of whats available.

If there's enough fabric, almost any weight (amost!!) should, in theory, cover up the lines of a crinoline. Which, let's face it, I'm probably going to need. A massive petticoat might work, but given the Wellington-Summer temperatures I don't want to lug half a tonne of tulle around on my hips!

..and by "weird warehouse of fabric" do you mean the Fabric Warehouse on Sar street? XD I love that place. It's like a little goldmine tucked away in the bowels of Thorndon.

Yeah, the one on Sar Street. It is cool, I've found some cool stuff there. It closes really early - something I only realised once I was facing the closed front door.

What happened to the Drow? I was really looking forward to seeing that.

The elfy thing? Or did I canon-hop. Or get the wrong person? There was going to be an epic armoured ball gown of doom. Or at least in my head there was.

Oh! The necromancer! Yes, there was - my wig went awol thanks to a colossal screwup on my part, and I am worried as to how my finances will cope with buying a replacement. So I'm taking an easy option. Maybe. We'll have to see, but this ones been on my list for about three years and I thought it'd be fitting for the occasion, lol.

...I would really, realy love to do that armoured ballgown though...damn you, meager income!

Well it looks awsome in the picture, if you pull it off half as well as you did your other ones it'll be brilliant!

But I'm so very tempted to pay you to make a wet-look vinyl gown (and then just about die of heat exhaustion) simply because it would look SO damn cool. So cool.

Lol if nobody can suggest anything better (HINT HINT SOMBODY PLEASE BE SMARTER THAN ME) I'll proably have to go with vinyl anyway. If i don't die trying, I'll let you know how many camels I'll require for a repeat performance XD And I'll totally exhaust Spotlight of their entire stock of the stuff...oh dear.

Satin, it's light, shiny, isnt THAT expensive, comes in all shades in colours, easy to find, good to work with & good to wear ^-^

PVC/vinyl, plasticky/shiny, but 20$+ per sq meter >_<'
