Commission issues
Post By IcyRose. 30/09/08, 11:12 am

So today I ended up getting my R2 Zero outfit for my Sunday cosplay at Auckgeddon today in the mail from a commission I got on eBay. I was very much excited and promptly tried on the outfit I was quite pleased with it, it looked great, it was well made, the material was all shiny, but something seemed a bit off.

Then I realised, the suit colour (which is supposed to be a kind of dark purple going on indigo colour) was matching the colour of the collar and cuffs (which are purple), I didn't really think much of it at first since it didn't really occur to be how different they were suppsoed to be until I double checked every reference picture I had including the ones used to display the costume I was buying in the auction and the difference seemed more apparent.

I would probably have returned it or asked it to be mended. If Armageddon wasn't within a month. I also checked the guy's feedback and a lot of other people getting the same outfit have seemed to be impressed, so I'm wondering if I got a faulty one or I'm just being really critical about this.

Oh well, I get what I paid for and I understood the risks of getting a commission when I bought it.

Discuss the issue with him - perhaps he/she can give you a partial refund to cover the costs of fixing it? That's a dayum though. sad Don't forget to place a review in the commisioner review thread on cosplay.com. :3

Not sure I'd get the costume back in time if I sent it back. But I'll pop a question over to the seller.

Yeah, I don't think you would either. What I meant was, ask for some of the money back to cover the cost of you fixing it yourself.

The purple bit happens to be the huge main part though, so I can imagine it being alot.

I'm really anal about cosplay colours myself. It has to be perfect. Like the bleach shingami captians coats had to have the lining colour on them, otherwise it would have bugged me constantly. People kept asking me why I went to so much trouble to do the lining. I mean, why wouldn't I? It's part of the costume ...

In the right lighting it doesn't look too bad. Here is a photo of what it looks like when I have the whole outfit on.

Also, yeah the colour takes up the vast majority of the costume, it would probably be easier to make a new one instead. on the plus side, the fabric is very nice and the actual sewing job was very professional..... just the colour is off.

Ah, I see what you mean, now. :C That's a pity - it really looks so well made as well...

Well there was a thought I had, but I really do need to consult with other people before I would consider taking this action.

Basically, there are two ways I can think of fixing the colour problem if I wanted to get it fixed before Auckgeddon.

1. Find material of the right colour and try cutting it into a sort of shell and glue it over the right parts (sewing is not an option as the sewing machine is currently occupied with my other cosplays that I need to finish).

or

2. Find fabric paint of the right colour and try recolouring it that way as dying would not help as it would cover everything when I only need to colour specific parts (lots of specific parts but still, not all of it).

Neither option sounds all that pleasant to be perfectly honest. I would really consider option 2 as it kinda sounds right on paper. but I have no idea on how the fabric would react to the paint, whether it would set right or whether it would ruin the colour completely. I'd totally try it if I had a sample of the material to test it on first, but I don't. Unless I make an inquiry at Spotlight or something.

Or I could just leave it as is. Anyone have advice?

Fabric paint wouldn't look very pretty, to be honest. It'd also be very time consuming - but is plausible.

I dunno if it'd help, but you can see me and my brother using fabric paint on our Olette and Pence costumes in these pics -

Fabric paint dries hard too, so I don't think it would very good.

Probably your best bet would be to leave it as it is for now, and send it back after Armageddon. And maybe the person making it couldn't get the right colour or something?

Wouldn't be able to send it back after that point. Also I happened to stumble upon another commission outfit image that matches my one, so that kinda confirms that mine isn't really faulty, just that's how it was made.

The seller sent me a reference pic he was using as well, which was an R2 Zero figure in that image the differences are only ever so slight and the shade of purple the suit is matches the one mine is it, so I might just be able to only modify the cuffs and collar..... which was be the easier and significantly shorter job.

Definitely tell them at least... I seem to hear this A LOT about commissions and commercially made costumes... surprising, as you'd think they'd have all the research and materials down well... I think that your best bet might actually be to leave it how it is and talk over if anything can be done (refund/remake) with the person you got it from... if nothing can be done then at the very least if they know about the prob the next one they make for someone else might be better... although that doesn't do much to solve your problem...
