Help with Spray Paint

anyone have suggestions with how I might achieve a better result with trying to paint a red strip down the centre of some webbing I'm planning on using on my costume.

have done 3 coats now and still not really getting any colour showing...

do I need to use a different colour as a base coat to put the red colour over or?

I'm using spray paint so

Is it black webbing? If so, you might have some more luck if you do a white base coat first. Also, check the type of paint you use for the base coat first because some types may not stick very well to synthetic webbing.

yeah it is black, sorry shoulda mentioned that. Yeah someone did mention doing a strip of clear acrylic nail polish as a base coat and then spraying over it once done.
