| Hey there! Usually the essentials for me when it comes to doing my own makeup and makeup for others are these:
Face: - Foundation / BB Cream / Tinted moisturiser. This is where it's good to invest a majority of your money, as a good base really helps bring your look together. - Concealer, especially for covering up any red spots or dark under-eye circles. - Blush, a pinky-coral is usually a shade anyone can wear. - A matte brown contour powder. Do NOT use bronzer to contour, as contouring is about creating shadows and bronzer will reflect light, which ruins the contour effect. - A finishing powder or spray, because all faces sweat and you want your makeup to stay! - Optional: Highlighter powder/pen, good for when you're using more dynamic lighting.
Eyes: - At least three shades of eyeshadow, ideally neutral and in a gradient. You want a light shade for the inner corner of your eyes, a medium shade to blend out with, and dark shade to contour your eye socket with. - Eyeliner, either gel or liquid. Winged eyeliner is something you definitely need to learn to do for feminine costumes! Don't use pencil eyeliner for top lining as the pigmentation won't be strong enough and it will smudge easily. - Eyeliner, pencil. This you'll use for softer or smokier looks. - A really good mascara, ideally super black as you want your lashes to show up in photos. - Eye primer, to stop your eye makeup from travelling during the day/con. - Optional: A good eyelash curler. - Optional: False eyelashes, make sure you practice with these!
Lips: - Lipstick in a nude (nude being similar to your natural lip colour, NOT a super light beige colour) shade. Don't go out and buy bright shades like red until you've got enough confidence in how you're putting your makeup together, because bold lips are attention grabbing and any flaws will show up easily. - Tinted lipgloss. Much easier to use if you're just beginning with makeup. - A good lipbalm, your lips will chap during cons! - Optional: A lipliner, especially if you need precise lips or the colour to last a long time.
If you check the stickies, you'll see there's an old thread of mine with a few good makeup places to check out. Sleek and Star Cosmetics are favourites of mine, due to being cheap and good quality :)
Of course with all the stuff I've recommended, you'll need to pick up a few makeup brushes, so I would check out Ecotools (Available at Life Pharmacy), Sigma, or Star Cosmetics.
Lastly, Klaire De Lys, Wayne Goss, and Promise Phan are excellent Youtube gurus to check out for makeup tutorials and basics!
I hope this helps :)

| That's quite a lot ~ But that really helped~ I've just got all this copied and printed out to read over~ XD I did quickly check out Star Cosmetics. It does look quite promising in terms of pricing. I would've though they had a physical shop that you can attend...Do they?
But yea, this is quite detailed and great information~ So for the brushes I just noticed...various sizes would help yes? I'm quite new at this
How long does it take for you usually to do up your cosplay make-up?? I know that it will be different from when I do (try to do it)...thought I just kind of asked about it. |

| You're going to want to invest in a C brush (eyes) a blending brush (eyes) A flat top kabuki and/or foundation brush (I prefer flat top kabuki) and a powder puff or bursh (and I don't believe the girl above me mention powder, powder weather it is coloured or not is essential for your foundation/bb cream to last all day, I'd also invest in a primer for your foundation too.) You may also want to invest in a lip brush if your character had strangely shaped lips. if eye primers are too expensive invest in a nude or white eyeshadow crayon or creme eyshadow, they do the trick :) If you're doing anything with glitter use lucas paw paw ointment underneath, makes the glitter stick all day, though it is hard to get off.
Also Shaaanxo has a series of beginner makeup tutorials like foundation eyeliner mascara etc. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLL91f0NXkACFkU5UsYN99PQ4EAccCiicR |

| Unfortunately Star Cosmetics doesn't have a physical store, but if you want to see swatches or reviews of any of the products then literally all you have to do is search: " [Brand name e.g. Maybelline] [Product Name e.g. Lipstick] [Shade of product] review" and I swear a ton of stuff will pop up.
If you're wanting to keep things cheap, Ecotools have some good basic kits you can pick up in Life Pharmacy. If you've got more to spend, definitely check out Sigma's kits. The important thing is have at least: An eyeliner brush, a flat eyeshadow brush, a fluffy eyeshadow blender brush, blush brush, foundation brush, and a powder brush.
I'm usually pretty quick with my makeup (30 mins at the very most), but keep in mind that if you're completely new to this, you do need to practice and give yourself plenty of time. Nothing is worse than looking back at cosplay photos and seeing that you've put on too much blush or your eyeshadow is washed out.
Youtube is literally bursting with makeup guru channels, so explore away!

Re: Basic Make-up Set? By March9Hare. 03/12/13, 01:43 pm |
| Yea, I tried one of those test foundation at one of the pharmacy in Pukekohe. It was pretty good in terms of my skin tone and close to what my current cosplay skin tone is~ So specific product names i should consider as part of m research in finding out the good and bad.
and I had a look at ecotools, the sets look good in quality and pricing~. I might consider, and I still just researching on the brushes specifically~. XD
I may or may not ask a friend of mine if she can help or not...but i think i can manage experiment etc. From a lot of video tutorials anyways~
Another thing I notice is, with the foundation, there is powder and liquid foundation? Your insights in terms of cosplay? thanks a lot for your help, it has been extremely helpful! |

| If you can get to puke again sometime in the holidays I can meet you there and show you what foundation suits, you can explain what you think you need and I can show you everything I was telling you about, I'm from Waiuku so I'm quite close. |

| For foundation to last all day you want a liquid and powder, the powder "sets" the liquid and makes it last a long time |

Re: Basic Make-up Set? By March9Hare. 08/12/13, 03:47 am |
| wow...just had a bit of a google search on 'Daenerys Qartheen gown' and wow, that's pretty impressive to make, I know its probably easy for you but in my view I'd fail making that...I have no sewing skills whatsoever...GoT huh...intense~ and I'm doing 'Hanji Zoe' from SnK, I just like the complexity of the outfits and I thought it'll be nice to end my college year dressed as a SnK chara. Otaku4Life.
So yea, that's why I pretty much need makeup and work on it, 'cause I have not used it before in my whole entire 17 years...~ |

| ah...it worked out well still~ You can try hair spray? Isnt that alright? rather than having to dye it literally or wearing a wig... I havent gone through that yet, im just seeing if I can manage my hair to be long as Hanji's and just spray it brown...if not prob wig then...=/ |

| Choice of extensions?... I just thought having wigs, i might not use it but for that part of the year... like for an unnatural hair colour fine...but I prob wouldnt consider wigging for common hair colours... but yea like you said...length... and I have just googled it, it will take more than a year to grow that long XD...but you can try I guess~ |

| I can't bleach my hair though, because I'm a model and then I'd have to get my portfolio shot again and it would damage my hair to hell bleaching it that light |
