Wellington - Studio Portrait Photographer looking for Cosplayers

Hey guys/gals,

My name is Chim, I am a student photographer from Massey Uni currently on my last year for my photography paper. I am putting together a project on cosplay potraiture.

A little background on my work, I started off being an automotive photographer for NZ Performance Car magazine, I soon found that I wanted to go beyond to that of cars (even though at the time this is all I wanted to do), along the way I shot a number of weddings and also numerous editorial shoots. At this point about 2 years ago I realized I needed/wanted to learn the history behind the art of photography which led me to pursue my studies. As the time has gone on I have slowly integrated and starting to specialize in portrait photography.

I am currently working on an exhibition/print project on portraiture. My work consists of working with the Large Format Camera (one of the cameras where you need the cloth over your head to see the ground glass), this project is completely self funded, pretty hard with the student budget when one shot of 4x5 film comes to $35 per shot sad

I only shoot if I believe I can give it a 100%, I work hard on all my work I put out.

Important note: These are not location style shoots that a lot of cosplay photography seems to be, I am shooting at our studio on the Massey campus over the next 4-5 weeks for this project, I also work with a lot of cinematic style lighting.

What I am looking for:
- Individual portrait shots of top Cosplayers (hope that's the right term)
- People who could also educate me on the art and lifestyle of cosplay

Questions I have:
- Makeup artists, do people usually do their own makeup or would I have to find someone? if so are there any recommendations for a good makeup artist who specializes in anime/cosplay makeup
- I can shoot up to 5 people in a session, reason being it does take a long time to setup and compose the shots with these cameras
- Would there be any concerns with print work or exhibition work of this kind?
- Would anyone be keen to travel to Wellington for this from out of town?
- I will put up days/times if there are people interested in a project of this sort.

Hey! I'd be happy to help, I have quite a busy schedule though, so it might not fit in Razz

(oh wait, I'm graduating in two weeks ...).

As for makeup, most cosplayers do it themselves. I do (: I quite enjoy it, haha.

Heya, I'm a wellington cosplayer happy to be involved when I'm not working. I do my own makeup and have had some makeup artistry training. Welcome!

Oh sweet that helps out rather then find a make-up artist who can also do cosplay style :)

Hmm I can basically shoot anytime from Monday onwards, just need a few days heads up to sort out the studio+gear etc.

What would be a suitable time for you guys? I can always start the project off with just a few people first and build on it over the passing weeks.

Also in terms of getting ready is it on site or get ready before hand then turn up?
If on site there is a changing room at the Massey studio with a decent sized mirror if that is the case

also! if there is a certain character you are portraying from an anime/manga etc could you link me an image of that character, I may have a pretty cool idea in regards to photographing this

Woohoo, so started shooting on my portfolio project also, pretty interesting collaborating with actors and dancers etc

Are you still doing this? I thought that it was over...*but just asking because i dont think i would have enough skills or stuffs to do what youre looking for* were you able to get the photoshoots done? if you had it may help if you talked about what you did, etc. We had a similar situation when JudasNZ organised a shoot in wellington and though that, what he did after was a really good way to gather more interest and give other cosplayers an idea of how the shoots went...https://cosplaynewzealand.forumotion.com/t12435-wellington-photoshoot-results-lessons-learned

Nah not over, have been doing another project in the mean time as I was not sure where else would be a place to find cosplay enthusiast.

Umm pretty much what I wrote on the first post in terms of the project itself, but always keen to have a portrait session with anyone who is interested in the project :)
