Hey I Have An Armageddon Video I'd Like To Share

What's up guys. On Saturday, the first day of Hamilton Armageddon, my friend and I decided to make a video of us interviewing cosplayers. Thing is though, these aren't your typical 'oh hey how did you make this costume' kind of interviews. Here I ask questions like 'how can guys meet new girls at conventions like this' and so on. I also put on a rude persona at times to try make the video less mundane. There have been some people who were a little displeased with the video but I'm hoping you guys will understand that it was just all in good fun. If this kind of thing offends you then please understand that there are far worse things on the internet haha. Alright anyway I'd love it if you guys gave me your thoughts and maybe ways to improve if I were to do it next time.

I think a lot of the content in the video came across as innappropriate and offensive. Next time keep it pg as armageddon is a family event.

The questions weren't very original and so they lost all their 'OMG no he didn't lol' effect they might have had otherwise.
If you want to do this kind of inappropriate interview persona then you absolutely have to have orignal material otherwise you come off as a jerk.

I'm not going to pretend like I'm good at interviewing people (because I'm really not) but you seem like you need to build up your interview skills and how you control the conversation. It's also a good idea to ask someone if you can have an interview with them and then call them a nerd or whatever you want to do. Then they will get into it a bit more, realising that it might be a front, and play along.

Unfortunately, this doesn't mean much at all. There are people who died yesterday in Afghanistan because of ongoing Shia and Sunni Muslim conflicts - But it still wouldn't make me slapping a friend at school anymore okay.

I'm sure you'll improve in the future, but please work a bit harder on keeping things appropriate.

Hey man, just checked back on your video. Despite your "live and learn" message, you appear to have deleted all comments criticising your video. That's straight up rude and making it pretty clear you couldn't care less about our opinions.

Good work, you have just made it pretty clear to NZ cosplayers who we should avoid.

Okay so, setting aside your dismissal of people's discomfort with the sexist questions in the video, Dartman, and all the discussion regarding whether or not your 'awkward comedy' routine is actually any good or not, another reason your video's getting a cold response here is that it's part of a long series of 'cosplay interview' videos we've seen over the years where people rock on up to make fun of the community.

Yeah, we're nerds. Most of us get it. Back in '07-'08ish C4 did a pretty scathing interview show where they spliced videos of cosplayers with other content and performed edits so they could make fun of us as a group of lunatics who don't realise they're parading around pretending to be fictional characters. We weren't exactly happy with that. We weren't happy the other half-dozen times people did it, either. I mean the bottom line is, you swoop into a group of people with a niche hobby in their sort of 'safe space' for sharing it, start asking the questions we're always asked-- oh how many people look at your boobs, is the con scene good for dating/how do you score with nerds, what the hell are you anyway-- and we're gonna end up rolling our eyes and getting peeved.

Some people may find your video funny, but those're the people who're looking to make a spectacle of cosplay anyway. And hey, whatever. If they want to laugh at the idiots who're taking a weekend out to wear spandex and carry a whip, whatever. Those idiots exist no matter what we do. But by setting out to share your video with the cosplay community, the community that's seen videos like this time and time again, you have to expect a negative response.

The very fact you have role models in the 'awkward cosplay interview' genre shows that we get this stuff a lot. And the reactions you're getting now are the groans of a community trying to show you that.

All other issues aside, this much is true: you can make videos like this if you want, but I think pretty much all of us cosplayers are sick of them now. Your choice whether you try to learn from that and pick up a more unique interviewing style, or keep going with this one. : )
