EO's custom t-shirts
By EternalOutsider. 10/11/12, 06:33 pm |
| Since i plan to make a bunch of these i thought i better make a dedicated thread.
Kazuma from Summer Wars As you can imagine, I love this logo.

Faisar from Wip3out 2097 . Strictly not accurate, i took some liberties with the colour layout to make it a little more recognisable compared with the modern versions.

Next on the cards is a gold on black Marathon logo (Halo fans should already know what that is )
Now all i need is that long hot summer! |

| I kinda worked this one out on my own, i use inkjet sticky sheets as stencils.
I haven't quite worked out all the kinks yet, I've yet to make them 100% wash-fast.
If i manage to nail it i will make a tutorial.
Cheers EO |

| Yay, my Faisar survived my regular wash cycle relativity unscathed.(top-loader, warm water, heavy duty wash) I should probably be using a delicate cycle in the future though.
So my strategy of baking them in the oven at 100ºC for 30min Works!
Now i can go full steam ahead with my other designs

| Marathon One of the best shooters to ever come out of the 90's, and still a big influence on modern games. Especially a little one called Halo
I'm starting o get to grips with how the quality and texture of the fabric effects the finish. Higher quality (ie 100% heavy grade cotton) are much harder to achieve a crisp finish, as it is hard for the stencil to stick down completely flush. The lighter/finer/thinner (and often lower quality) fabrics produce the most stunningly crisp results. So its a bit of a tradeoff. If your design is super detailed you may have to drop to a cheap grade. This Marathon here was done on a medium/high grade and the paint snuck under a little bit on the fine parts of the lettering. Also how many coats you do might be a consideration. As every additional coat risks more paint misbehaving. This is 2 coats. I probably would have got a crisper result by just doing 1 (but less opacity oomph of course). You could as a 3rd option just do 1 coat of the fine parts (what i should have done here). And finally another thing i found is that the design shrinks about 5% horizontally (width ways) when heat set. This was a bit of a problem with the feisar logo as it required the big white circle to be painted and heat set before the blue and yellow elements were added. So you will need to build appropriate margins (ie thick outlines) into your design to cope with that. |

| I-War (Independence War) One of the best space combat simulators ever, and one of the few that employed real Newtonian physics (ie things have mass and can't stop/turn on a dime). The sequel I-War 2, Edge of chaos, is also excellent and still runs of modem equipment.

Painting white on black is just a pain in the butt, the spaceship in the middle took 4 coats! compared to the silver and gold elements which only needed 1. Not sure how that works, maybe the metallic flake in it? At lest with black shirts, you do have the luxury of cleaning up the edges with a black pen. |

So many memories of lunchtimes playing that game on the old Macs in the school computer room. I always be rocking the duel pistols
I'm not sure if it's nostalgia, but modern games just don't have that same 'hand crafted' feel to them (Indy games are starting to recover that aspect). |

| Clan Jinnouchi from Summer wars (The kanji just says Summer wars again) I couldn't find the kanji for Clan Jinnouchi itself sadly.

A nice easy black on off-white this time.

| Spike Spiegel from where else but Cowboy Bebop
Possibly my best work yet. White on back is still an uber pain in the butt (5 coats!), but you cant argue with results. The super contrast almost gives it a 3D effect. I also took advantage of the fact i am using a brush, Blending!

There really fun to make too I won't be be buying anymore random designed t-shirts anymore, that's for sure. Was in Amazon (Albany mall) $60 for a printed Billabong T, Supper thin and a design i could do in an hour. Pass!
Now that I've got the proses down, look out for a tutorial.

| fe600 anti-gravity racing league From the very fist Wip3out game.

Gloriously 90's design
Cutting out that much font is a pain
The Impact brand of label sheets have changed. There now way more sticky. It dose make them harder to position, but i think they give better crisper results. |

| An untitled character by Rhys Owens I call him Mic (Military industrial complex) Just a really nice illustration with some good symbolism. I like how the peace symbol is dripping, possibly symbolising that peace is only an afterthought to this characters agenda.

Spent a good 20min just picking the stencil off this one. All those wispy bits |

| U.E.S.C. Marathon 'bob' shirt, (original composition)
I was aiming for a military stencil look. The idea was something the bob's (born on board) might ware on their off time, when their not helping you fight aliens.
Good use of a green shirt i don't normally ware much.

Re: EO's custom t-shirts

| Updates. Well im still figuring out how best to heat set them. Some of my previous attempts have not survived the wash too well.
Heavy white on dark colours are still my #1 issue. My first Kazuma ones are starting to look very distressed.
Turns out baking them at 100°C for 30min is not quite enough.
Some further experiments of 150°C for 20min seems to yield better results with only a little smoke. (That may sound bad, but there is no damage to the t-shirts. I think its coming from the 100% synthetic tags.)
Sit tight, i still plan on making a tutorial once i sort out all the kinks. |

| Yip im doing both. 2 min with the iron and the rest in the oven. Heat setting with just the iron is rather tedious (5 min= sore arm), and there is a risk of missing bits.
That's the theory anyway. |
