What should I use??
Post By Neo The Coon. 25/09/12, 04:57 am

Hey all, XD
I've never made a cosplay before and I would like some advice.
I plan to make a Ulquiorra normal/unreleased suit but I have no idea on what material would be best to use, and I also want to make the helmet out of something durable but I have no idea... psyduck
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you sewn before? Cause the answer to that is gonna change the explanations on where to start. <3

Whenever you have no ideas on how to make something, look for tutorials for that thing, they'll give you ideas!

This persons mask is made out of plaster bandage:

They've used gesso to cover it, because given enough layers you can then sand it down. Which is why their mask is so awesomely smooth.

Here's a super fancy tutorial which could give you ideas as well:

I know they're not exactly what you're looking for, but hopefully you have ideas now! C: Also, please supply a photo of the cosplay you're talking about in your post.

When I made Bleach cosplays a few years back I used cotton drill material. It's nice and thick, so not see-through or anything. A lot of the time cotton drill is good to use for lots of cosplays, but knowing which fabric is best for what takes a bit of getting used to! I haven't made something from cotton drill in a long time, and I miss it because it's one of the easiest fabrics to sew! (I still cry whenever someone says 'taffeta', the fabric used on my purple dress in my avatar Razz)

Another fabric you could use is actual suiting. It's the fabric used to make suits, but imo cotton drill is nicer for Bleach cosplays (:

One of my friends cosplayed Ulquiorra a few years back and he made his helmet thing out of paper clay, which you can get from Spotlight. It's extremely light clay (: And he then attached it to his head with a hair clip thing. Paper clay might not be as durable as you want (it's kinda squishy even after fully dried) but I think for a headpiece like that it should be fine. And gesso is an awesome thing to use for cosplay to put on top of things, but it can be a bit hard to get extremely smooth.

I can't quite remember what he wears as clothing, is it hakama pants? Because you will most likely be able to find a tutorial on google for those, which is how I made mine. And you might be able to find a similar pattern for the top from a store and modify it slightly.

when i cosplayed ulquiorra, i did my helmet the exact same way pura described. ;) the paperclay makes it look a lot like bone because it's a porous material too (win win!)
