Weekly Qs #2: What was/is going to be your first costume? How did it go? By seraphik. 02/10/12, 03:32 pm |
| what was/is going to be your first costume? how did it go? why did you choose it?
time for a blast from the past! my first 'costume' was robin from witch hunter robin when i was 13. i tried to make her horizontal pigtails by getting my mother to put hard wire into my hair and wrap it around it, which ended dramatically hilarious (and painful). also, wasn't so much a costume so much as wearing a lot of black clothes... but i think i've come a way from that now!! |

| My first cosplay was Zexion from Kingdom Hearts when I was 14 (I think). It ... was awful B) The book I made was pretty badass though if you ask me. I was gonna wear a wig, but then we got kicked out of the food court B). I chose him because I was obsessed with KH back in the day and he was my fav character ...
My mum made it for me, haha.
The cosplay I made first myself was a Bleach kimono cosplay thing. It was pretty well made! I got worse, and then I got better, lol. It was only last year I started trying to sew properly |D.
Man I wish I got into wigs sooner! I had one for my Bleach cosplay, but I felt silly wearing it, so I hardly wore it at all ... Now I have a wig obsession (box full of 28 OTL).
... Can I ask if people want to share a picture of their first cosplays? I only will if other people will (it's awful, seriously). |

| (Good topic, I was thinking of posting something like this in my sketchbook :- )
My first costume was Roy Mustang, which I brought from eBay. I knew almost nothing about cosplay and wore it to Armageddon Wellington 2008. I think I was 21 at that time.
Didn't have a wig back then. (Actually had some of my own hair left, lol). I didn't know if I would like going to the convention or if I would continue. It was fun so I carried on coming back and started making my own stuff. Eventually I was brave enough to talk to people and make friends
First costume I actually made was Li Syaoran School Uniform from Cardcaptor Sakura. My mother helped a bit with that. I made the Top, Hat and Lazen Board. I found a youtube video 'How To Cosplay: Make A Sailor Fuku (School Uniform)!' which helped a lot with making and attaching the collar. I wore it at Armageddon Wellington 2009.

| My first cosplay was a real trainwreck of an Axel outfit. My mum made it for me when I was 11, and made me most of my subsequent outfits, until I was about 13-14. First thing that I put together a decent amount of myself was Dante Redgrave, from DMC3.
Can't find photos of those, unfortunately, but here's another one of my earliest outfits, Fai D Flourite:
- Spoiler:
And here's the last outfit I made/wore for contrast:
- Spoiler:
So I think I've come a reasonably long way! Here's hoping for more improvement in the future. =) |

| My first 'cosplay' was Cheza from Wolf's Rain. My mum made a pink cloak and I spent 8 hours handing stitching left over scraps onto my boots as covers lmao. I just wore a skirt and top underneath.
The first cosplay I made myself was Nanashi from MAR. Bought the pants, made everything else. I painted some white canvas shoes. and now I remember that's why I have a bunch of 'pearl' bracelets
Not too bad I think?? Though my painting is so unclean sob.

- Spoiler:
It's kind of cheating because I sewed clothes for myself a few years before starting cosplay...SHAMEFULLYI didn't start sewing until I was 20! (I am old) |

| Gaara - Naruto Shippuden - Wellygeddon 2008. I was 20.
- Spoiler:
I made the coat, grey harness and the shoes. The shoes were really crappy and oh god, what was I thinking with that wig...The coat was made from a men's pattern so it didn't really fit well, and back then I didn't have the skills for fitting things.
So I remade the costume last year, except for the harness. Got a better wig and better makeup.

Also cool.
Mine was made in a hurry for my first ever cosplay event/epic trip of ... to dunedin. It was Brock, so we could talk Angie into doing pokemon. I bought the trousers, ran out of material for the T-shirt somehow, so bought one. I mocked up a vest from nylon, and was still hand sewing the leather pouches when I arrived in Dunedin. Cheap wig refused to play along well. But we had heaps of Pokemons.

Also did a Captain Jack. that weekend. An RNZAF great cloak out of my warbdrobe, a modified shirt from the army surplus, etc.

| I actually had two first cosplays...I worked on one for myself and one for my friend at the same time.
They are Anzu and Atemu from Yu-gi-oh for the 2005 Wellygeddon I even found some cruddy photos Anzu:(in the pink... We did a photo of all the school girls that year)
- Spoiler:
Atemu (can kinda see it in the left)
- Spoiler:
The problem was I had never sewn before and had no sewing machine...So both were hand sewn with made up patterns. They were also made out of anything I could find around the house or find in the fabric bin at the 2nd hand store - heck the most of the Atemu outfit was made out of adapted pillow cases. |

Re: Weekly Qs #2: What was/is going to be your first costume? How did it go? By Rolly. 05/10/12, 01:10 pm |
| My first costume was Reimu from Touhou. I had no sewing machine so a long time was spent, head bent, sore neck, bleeding fingers making the costume in time for Doujin Overload. This must have been back in 2008.
I remember hand sewing the hem of the circle skirt together... at 2am on the day of DO.
I think I chose Reimu over Marisa (the other choice I was debating over) at the time was because I just got into Touhou (the fandom didn't last long for me), was because I thought Marisa's skirt would take a gazillion metres of fabric. I later learnt down along the line that it was a petticoat...
I spent most of DO that day in a daze, I remember being 'high'/giddy with the excitement of being in costume, that I don't remember much of the art that year.
tl:dr, I don't think my first costume is as mentally scarring as some people's would have.
EDIT: OH LOOK I FOUND A PICTURE

Re: Weekly Qs #2: What was/is going to be your first costume? How did it go? By neimhaille. 05/10/12, 02:28 pm |
| First cosplay was a costume for a Song in Costume class in the North Shore Performing Arts Singing Competition in 1995. I think that is older than many of the cosplayers here ;)
Not a direct copy but an interpretation based on what I could afford- oh had we access to the same prices as can be found now I'd have gone whole hog on a dress that takes 15m of fabric...
The next year I did a more direct copy of a costume for the same contest, I sang Memory from Cats but as Griddlebone (thinking she was surely a role Grizabella played ;) ). I really want to remake that costume with the full epic tail of ridiculousness. Sadly no good pictures and the entire costume has been lost due to firey circumstances... but I made a pattern at the time anyway so I still have that :)
I still have that first costume though. To remind me where I am going and where I have been. ;)

Re: Weekly Qs #2: What was/is going to be your first costume? How did it go? By sakuramiyabi. 05/10/12, 04:54 pm |
| My first cosplay was Suiseiseki from Rozen Maiden.
My friend and I were supposed to go as a pair but she didn't finish. I didn't have a sewing machine at the time so I sewed it entirely by hand. It was made out of poplin and while there are definitely better choices I'd like to think it came out quite nicely.
I hand-sewed everything in 2 weeks before the con (Armageddon 2007). I was 18. I met so many awesome people. Like seraphik <3 and I credit my existence on this forum to Duckeh.
I figured out how to do the triangle sleeves by looking at gothic lolita clothing in Smoove and the tunic was pretty much a square with the patterns cut into it~
The inner shirt was a pain white shirt I finally got at Farmers Henderson after looking for one all over Auckland (I didn't know what was 2nd hand stores and net shopping).
My mum helped me with fabric choices as I had no knowledge about fabric whatsoever and the lovely lady at Spotlight gave me a crash course on how to make a petticoat.
I remember I made the skirts from a rectangle piece of fabric and just pleated it on the sides (I had no idea what a circle skirt was)
I used my own hair (which was long at the time) and had no makeup on (OHTHEHORRORS) I HAVE a couple of pictures. But no. They will never see the light of day again. I'd like to think I've improved over the past 4 - 5 years.
4-5 years down the line I have remade this costume twice and still plan to remake it. This time.
Full on neck-breaking wig wefting, life-sized watering can and all. Someday. |

| The first one I made was Shana from Shakugan no Shana. Made it the week before auckgeddon and it took 6 hours straight to make. It ended up being a bit too small and the skirt ripped on the day.
My first official one was like, Enma ai from jigoku shoujo, but that was bought so I don't count it.
Thank god I no longer have photos of either ^^'' |

| Oh god. My first costume was Haruhi Suzumiya I believe. Thankfully I lost all photos of it when my laptop at the time died cause it was sub-par. I made it myself and it probably took about 12 hours all up but they were spread over about a month as I wasn't even sure at the time if I wanted to cosplay. The first costume I made that I have pictures of is one of my Misa cosplays. It was an obscure as physics costume that appeared in maybe 6 frames of the manga but at the time I was determined that if I were to continue doing well known characters, I had to do them in obscure costumes. IDK what I was thinking, now days idgaf if it's overcosplayed or has a fanbase of 1000 people worldwide, if I like it, I will cosplay it.

| My first cosplay was this year at hamilgeddon. I was Luna Lovegood I admit the actual clothes were crappy, I bought a factory made robe which had to be taken quickly altered by my aunt a few days before con. The tie was something I already owned, the skirt was an old school one and the shirt was my mums from when she was working. on the other hand the jewelry turned out pretty good. Also the wig was brilliant.....even if I spent like $60 on it, not realizing I was spending far to much. For a first cosplay I'm pretty happy with it though, but I don't think it'll be worn again. |

| Oh, BEST THREAD. I love seeing this stuff!
My first cosplays were Alyx Vance from Half Life 2 and Jun from Avatar, both worn to Auckland Armageddon in 2009. I was 21. I did them at the same time, but Alyx was mainly just duct tape and fleece stuck on things, and painting. Jun I actually had to sew stuff (I hadn't sewn anything in my life, apart from a pillowcase when I was about eleven). My mum helped A LOT- she put the zip in and showed me how to actually use the machine. The stitching is pretty much the worst you will ever see- I don't know how it held together. Also the whip is made of tape.
PS: It took two hours to straighten my hair.

| My first costume was Axel from Kingdom Hearts 2 but I didn't make it I just borrowed the coat off of a friend. This would have been 2008 Wellington Armageddon.
The first costume that I made by myself (with help from my mum) was my Cabbage man from Avatar and I think that was 2009 Wellington Armageddon. I'm actually quite proud of it for my first costume, it's lasted a really long time, mainly because my mum used an over-locker.
And no pictures because I can't be bothered trying to find some |
