How did you discover Cosplay?

Looking back, I think my first exposure to (what I later found out was) cosplay, was when I saw two young ladies walking down the main street dressed in sailor suits. Turns out they were cosplaying Sailor Moon.

I sort of found out about cosplay in a bit of a backwards fashion.

At the time I just knew that people dressed up as characters; and those people went to this 'Armageddon expo' thing.
Well I just thought it looked fun so I made my first costume and rocked up to the event in Wellington 2008 and that was the first time I heard the term 'cosplay'.

In 2006, when it was announced Armageddon was coming to Christchurch for the first time. My friend Sam, said we should cosplay for it. I had no idea what it was, I mean I had only recently learned about what anime was that year with our anime club. Haha.
Anyway she sent me a youtube link of a Kingdom Hearts Skit, and said "that's cosplay. DO IT."
So I did.

I found out about it through the internet, looking a pretty pictures of cosplayers!
Then at the first Chchgeddon I saw there was a cosplay contest and thought 'Why not ~~Zoidberg~~ me?'

Armageddon.
I loved (and love) Anime and Jrock, went to Armageddon because of this.
I saw Chii cosplay and wanted to look awesome and cosplay ~~chii~~ also ^^

In general: I was/am a big fan of the illustrator Aimee Majors and she had a gallery of her costumes on her site. I was blown away that you could play dress ups as a serious hobby Very Happy

A few years later My younger sister and her friend started cosplaying and I got all jelly and realised hey I can do this too!

I was already into dressing up, gaming/anime and sewing in highschool, but had no idea there was cons in NZ. When I was 17 a friend told me about Armageddon and that people 'cosplayed' there, so of course I had to go along in a costume, and have been hooked ever since. It's crazy to think once upon a time I didn't know anyone at Armageddon, and now cosplayers make up the majority of my friends. Hehe. chuu~!

Through the internet? I was going through fandoms and seeing what people did and there happened to be cosplayers floating around.

Some time in 2005, I discovered that you could buy costumes online, probably through some Google image search for Fullmetal Alchemist.
Looked interesting so I investigated further and discovered Cosplay Smile

I knew Armageddon Expo existed for a while before this but had never been until I had found out that is where you go to cosplay. First time I went (and cosplayed) was Wellington 2008 (Using the excuse that I was entering the AMV contest [Which was true]).

i found out about cosplay because my sisters friend told her about it then she told me
i didnt actually know what cosplay was when i was little but i would always cosplay selphie from final fantasy 8 (and not very well i may add) Embarassed

I found out about it when i was watching Ninja Scroll and said to my wife.. Man i wish i could be Jubei.. Even just have his costume. she told me about people in Japan dressing up as anime characters and playing the role.. so i thought to myself.. I would make one epic Totoro or Jubei.. Decided to start on a costume and this year will be my first time doing Cosplay and i will be doing it at armageddon.

Little did I know I was a cosplayer before I even knew what it was! I used to dress up as HP characters and Indiana Jones as a kid.

I think I first stumbled across the term cosplay on the internet when I was 11 or so. I was into ATLA back then and stumbled across pics on DeviantArt and thought it looked cool.

My sister had already been attending Armageddon so I decided to tag along for the first time when I was 13. I went in normal clothes but fell in love with cosplaying after seeing everyone dressed up. I had already begin planning my first cosplay (a closet cosplay of Rose Tyler)
