Northern Irish geek looking for geek friends

I would like to join the club to make some friends who have similar tastes to me; I just can't talk to my current friends about gaming as in-depth as I'd like. When dressing up, you'll probably see me as Professor Layton. I went as him to Armageddon last year. (It's just a black jacket, orange shirt and cardboard top hat). I also have a Mario cap and Tanooki hat I got for free at EB games (they were trying to get rid of them, and they offered them to me when I got Mario 3D Land.) I'm thinking of making a Gordon Freeman costume too. I've been in New Zealand since October '08, so I've been through the quakes. I have a diverse taste in games, and I have a certain respect for Japanese games and their distinctive qualities (I think that cosplayers probably share the same opinion.) I also have a Warhammer 40K Tau army that I always say I'll do more painting for. I got the army 2 years ago and it still isn't done. I enjoy the builing of the models and the game itself, but painting, not so much. I also play a lot of Team Fortress 2, way better than Call of Duty and its many clones. In short, I am looking for friends, have a Professor Layton costume and like geek stuff.

I'd like to know where the club meets, when, and how often.

By the way, I'm 17 years old, in Year 13, and learning Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Accounting and Classics.

Oh wow, it's a shame we're so distant. My dad is from Northern Ireland and I come from a family of geeks who seem to thrive on many things being movies, games and even comics. My dad is looking forward to Far Cry 3. I've tried TF2 somewhat but my computer can't really run TF2 very well. I can go as far as gary's mod for online games.

I also take classics. But no maths or sciences as I take a more art-ish route. These subjects being, Digital Design, Painting, Art History and media studies on top of Classics.

I like a large variety of videogames too. And you reminded me that I have to finish the Prefessor Layton games. I seem to like a huge mix of games and right now I'm right into the NDS Yu-Gi-Oh! Games, but that's because I've gotten back into the anime. And those games are a great way to relearn how to play the game. What other games do you seem to like? Japanese games gives a large range.

I just read Gordon Freeman...He is one of my Idol characters of all time. You will get all the Kudos from me if you cosplay him. I've been planning a Alyx cosplay for a while now, just never had the time to actually do something about it. But for now I'm working on my Jaden and Ishizu cosplays.

Welcome.

The short answer is that the club doesn't meet. Officially as stated somewhere on here the club is in on a break. It was originally because of the earthquake. But it has been on a break for so long, for no obvious reason. And Riven is still in charge, so until she starts it up again or hands it over to someone else, or allows the members to arrange meetings (like we use to do), then it's effectively dead. (Well Will has organised the odd thing a long time ago.)

(To put it in perspective there was very little cosplay, or any organisation, at these meetings anyway over the last few months of the club.)

On the other hand there are some opportunities, like Geddon, and Japan Day, and traveling to Dunedin for Anime Expo, Welly or Auckland for Geddon. And there is absolutely nothing stopping people organizing their own events (picnics, games days, anime viewings, games meets, whatever,) as long as they don't call them official CCC meetings.

Well, Riven's profile says she hasn't been on since November, so maybe she just lost interest or something? Still, the main reason I want to join is to meet people who are as into gaming as I am, not to dress up (although I still like my Layton costume).

Well you will notice there is a chch cosplayers sub-forum, and a chch cosplay club sub-sub forum. Assume the club one is inactive, and use the chch cosplayers forum to talk about meeting up privately for whatever and/or look for a school or general gaming club. EB games or stores like that probably sponsor game competitions, maybe, I'm not sure? Geddon sometimes has networked games. Also some people will meet for LAN parties or at internet cafes for networked games.

Wecome to CNZ :) Not sure if you know, but with 40K, There is a group called cavaleirs that meets each thursday roughly 6.30pm-10pm ish at the St Albans Workermans Club in Shirley. People go there to play Fantasy, LOTR, 40K and other stuff. They have a bunch of terrain you can use and everyting n.n there is a small membership fee, but it's worth coming along sometime to have a look to see if you are interested (I don't play so I don't have to pay the membership fee, But I go along each week to watch my mates play Surprised

)

Unfortunately due to the quakes and busyness of our Christchurch mods, events here have been on an unofficial hiatus. However, please remember you are always welcome to throw your own events! Usually cosplayers will meet and greet each other at events, so just say hi :)

If you're keen to talk about gaming, head over to gaming subforum - Pretty sure there's a Professor Layton thread floating around somewhere.
