[CHCH] Invitation to a day-of-making: Sat 21 April 2012 By OmnivoreNZ. 01/04/12, 05:20 am |
| We, OmnivoreNZ (Charles), darrenshanfan (Rachel), and Kim Cyborg (Alexandra) would like to invite people to a day of prop/costume making at our home. This is just a chance to come along and work on some project you have going, with company from other like-minded people.
If you want to take the opportunity to work on any props that require more 'forceful' tools, there's a well stocked garage with drills, saws, soldering irons, etc. There are also many boxes of 'stuff that might be useful for a prop one day', beads, scraps of fabric and leather, copper wire, etc, that you might like to raid (within reason).
Bring along something to work on, perhaps some things to work with (such as an extra glue gun or scissors), and snack food to your liking. We'll cook up some pancakes and waffles at some stage.
When: from 10am till the late afternoon / people get bored.
Where: PM OmnivoreNZ for the address, but it's in Woolston, near the Ferrymead end of Linwood Ave (two blocks from various bus routes).
Cost: $nothing
Warnings: (1) There will be at least some Old People (tm) present. (2) Our pancakes tend to be fattening. (3) Our house is always an untidy mess, and the earthquakes haven't helped. You have been warned.
Let us know if you're interested.

| I have plans for props, so I would be interested in using a workshop. I can bring a dremel for the small work that most other tools struggle with. |

| [Mandy] Be great if you can make it.
[Highlander] I agree, my Dremel sits with the soldering iron, hot-glue gun, and heat-gun as the 'ready tools' by my work desk. What sort of props are you planning?
I need to make some mad scientist knife switches for my steampunk Victorian / Alien radio (wood and brass and alien squibbly bits). |

I need to make some mad scientist knife switches for my steampunk Victorian / Alien radio (wood and brass and alien squibbly bits). Well possibly several. Just got to find materials I guess. I want a hand held two way radio and headset. I am going to do a Sunbeam laser pistol too. I have the noise circuitry too make up. But still not 100% on a super-bright LED/battery combo.
I have a PVC pipe for the mid section of the gun. I need to make up the front and back. Easiest way would possibly be to carve from wood. Thought about clay too. But then it need to be hollow to fit the electronics. I am starting to wonder about a wood mold, and vacuum shaping some ABS onto it? |

We don't bite. Honest! And meeting people is what it's all about. Looks like we should have a good range of ages from teenagers up to ancient (me).
[Highlander] Vacuum forming is fun - had to do a bunch of hemispheres for our half-sized Dalek, and a tricky dome shape formed over plaster of paris shaped on a turntable. Luckily my wife didn't object to using the kitchen oven to soften the plastic. |
