Good Anime to watch By Interstella. 06/02/12, 02:32 pm |
| Hi guys I've been off anime for a while and am looking for a good anime to watch. I want something with a good plot that doesn't go on about nothing for most of its episodes (Dragon Ball series = hundreds of hours of screaming, Naruto = 100 episodes of filler). I like things with twists and intrigue. Things with a side of romance, but preferably not all about the romance.
AND NOTHING LIKE TWILIGHT. I want something that actually has a plot and real characters.
What I've seen and enjoyed so far:
Death Note Trigun Fruits Basket (though this was a little lacking in plot) Vampire Knight
I could also do with something that's easy to get a hold of, so if you have a strong torrent, or know what sites to get it from quickly (now that mega upload is gone, I find it hard to find stuff for direct download), let me know please ^^
Thanks to everyone
EDIT: Oh and if you could give me a short description of what the anime is about, that would be awesome. Thanks. |

| Have you ever watched Samurai Champloo? It's by the same creators as Cowboy Bebop, about a girl named Fuu and two warriors who she somehow coerces into escorting her whilst she travels through Japan searching for 'The Samurai who smells like Sunflowers'. It's set in the Edo area (if I recall correctly) in Japan, and is particularly unusual because it combines modern day popular Japanese street culture into it's music and graphic stylings. It's a highly entertaining series best described as comedy/action/with some drama, and I'd really recommend it.
It's also around 25 episodes long (I can't remember the exact number) so it's not gonna take you forever to get through. |

| Venturing a little off the beaten track with this recommendation, but Xam'd: Lost Memories is worth a go.
Xam'd is set in an unnamed world where two continents, the North and the South, are locked in permanent battle. In the middle of the planet is an ocean with a variety of neutral territories, who are occasionally the victim of terrorist attacks from either continent. One day, on Sentan Island, the North attacks, and the island is changed into a war-zone. However, at the same time, there is an unrelated bus bombing where a teenage boy named Akiyuki is implanted with a stone that transforms him into a biomechanical weapon called a Xam'd. He goes on a rampage, but is quickly turned back to normal and adopted into the crew of a postal airship.
The story follows Akiyuki as he tries to return to Sentan Island, and his friend Haru who is left dealing with the impact of her home being destroyed by war and trying to get Akiyuki home. In terms of style, the show is done as a kind of homage to Studio Ghibli movies with a lot of love put into the animation-- it's very nostalgic-feeling, with this kind of atmosphere of magic and fantasy, despite the dark themes it's exploring. It's by the studio who did Fullmetal Alchemist and Eureka Seven, if you've seen either of those? 26 episodes long, fantasy/drama/action and then some romance towards the end.
Aaand my other recommendation, since you liked Death Note, is Gankutsuou, which has the same kind of dark, stylish thing going on with it. It's a retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo-- basically, man is sent to prison by his best friend, gets out, swears extremely elaborate and dramatic revenge on said friend. It's 25 episodes, and it has a really unusual animation style; some people say the way it's been animated makes them sick, so be warned! It's great once you get used to the animation, though. =D One of my personal favourites. |

| I, for one, love Pandora Hearts.
Summary: Oz Vessalius, heir to the Vessalius dukedom, has just turned fifteen. His life is rich and carefree, darkened only by the constant absence of his father. At his coming-of-age ceremony, however, everything changes. For no reason that he can discern, Oz is cast into the prison known as the "Abyss", only to be saved by a "Chain" known as Alice, the Bloodstained Black Rabbit, B-Rabbit for short. The mystery there begins as Oz unravels the mystery behind Alice, the Abyss and the strange organization known as Pandora.
It's similar to Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, but based on fantasy and mystery. Not much of romance in it, but I still recommend it! c:
Then there's another anime I forgot the name of. I'll get back to you on this one. |

I agree about Samurai Champloo. Excellent series.
But there are so many series to choose from. Try a wide variety and figure it out from there.
If you like planes then Area 88. A bit slow, but about a mercenary caught in a war, and the back lot to that. Short series.
If you like sci-fi then: Armitage dual matrix and Armitage Poly-Matrix movies. About the relationship between Mars and Earth, and Man and android. Some limited romance. Ghost in the Shell movie, maybe GITS II. GITS stand alone complex, as either two series or three OVA's. A police counter cyber terrorism unit. Lots of action. But a the movie is a powerful statement about identity in the online/cybernetic world. (Also politics). The series follow the team tracking down a series of terrorists. The OVAs summarize the series. Metrolpolis. The origins actually go back to a 1920's German sci-fi movie. A young boy and his father, a mad scientist, and the underground of the city. Reasonable action. Serial Experiments Lain. A young high school girl goes from totally offline to totally connected in this short series. Cute. Goes weird. Also about identity and the net. Appleseed. there are two different version of the movie, an earlier and later one, and one follow up movie. About a post war world, world politics, terrorism and one mans personal history. Follows a high powered police unit. Some limited romance. Voices of a distant star: Worth viewing as s short movie totally produced by one man. Bittersweet. Young romance, by correspondence as her ship gets father from earth.
Robots: Generally a mixed genre. Neon Genesis Evangelion has some fighting and robots, but is actually about a teen boy and his sad relationship with his father and the other pilot, a shy girl.
Steam punk: Steam boy. A rollicking adventure movie about a boy who's inventor father is kidnapped by an evil man. Boy saves London. Set in gorgeous Victorian London.
Horror: Red Garden. A surprisingly good series about a group of high school girls who die, and are used in a long running war between two cursed families. Most of the series actually is spent as they try and retain their normal lives. And look out for each other, when they are people who would have never talked to each other before. But a reasonably well crafted plot, told from all angles. Gantz. A much different version of the above. A girl and two guys among others are dead, and wake up in a room. They find themselves in a deadly game without any explanation, then dumped back into their life, until the next mission. Helsing. The classic vampire anime tale everyone knows. About the protestant version of the Van helsing movie. And their own vampire. And locating the source of an increasing horde of undead. Short series. Second long series, not yet complete.
Pumpkin scissors. Another surprisingly good series set with a small propaganda unit after a devastating war. Their fearless leader confronts corruption where ever she finds it. But there is a back story involving one new member and powerful shadowy forces and history.
Fantasy: Scrapped princess. Follow a princess, her guards, and various randoms, on an undercover quest across various kingdoms and the whole continent. Plenty of amusing side plots, and side characters. Gradually learning more of the repressed history of the world. Leading to a confrontation with the mysterious beings who control the planet.
GunSmithCats (GSC) An american Detective Noir style OVA, crossed with high explosive action. Extreme effort went into recreating the american feel, the muscle cars, the guns, etc.
She The Ultimate Weapon Bittersweet romance. Two teens in a war. She ends up being the ultimate weapon. No happy ending. Short series.
Chrono Crusade A great platonic love between a demon and a nun exorcist here. Explores their past and the demon rebels, and their attempts to stop the demons. But please read the Manga!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first half of the anime is spot on. The ending changes every episode after that. *#*#*#*#
There is plenty of other high quality anime with plots that look interesting, but I haven't had time to seen the entire series through, if you want more recommendations.

| Well, I haven't seen many but I would definitely reccomend:
Ghost in the Shell - see above Elfen Lied - ummm, VERY gory, has some romance, and I shamelessly cried at the end of it. Darker Than Black
And gawd, I know there are a few more that I can't quite remember that are awesome too. |

Elfen Lied is also a classic favorite of people here. Shorts bursts of lots of blood. A small amount of disturbing content. Very much an allegory of discrimination. Elfen Lieds start appearing among humanity. They seem dangerous, and are contained by the government. One escapes, and the story begins from there. Short series.
Steampunk: Last exile. Young talented van ship (to person steam powered plane) pilot and girl co-pilot childhood friend get a contract to deliver a message to an airship/battleship which turns out to starting a battle. They get progressively more involved together with a rebel battleship and it's captain. And end up finding out how the world is really run, etc.
Two old favorites.
Wolfs Rain. Ultimately a tale of birth and re-birth. Follows a group of wolves in human disguise as the travel through a dismal cloudy earth, searching for a home. Very sad. Full series.
Otogi Zoshi. One of the more special Anime. Two short arcs make up the full series. One set in the past with samurai and finding the sacred stones. Then a totally different modern urban tokyo story with the same characters re-incarnated, with different relationships, and a series of side plots. Which all ends up completing the circle.
For more light romance, DNAngel. A supernatural theif, and his adversary. And the two sisters he knows.
Gilgamesh. Horror-ish. A world which has suffered a castastrophy. A brother and sister with supernatural powers. Taken in by a woman with a few others, and a role in their past. And slowly they unravel and confront the past. Full series |

| Man, you guys recommend all the good one >~<
Anyways, I agree to Samurai Champaloo as well as Efen Lied (very bloody and gore-ish excuse my english)
Recommend Code Geass: Lelouch The Rebelion. It's about Lelouch an exiled prince who processed an power called Geass and decided to go against the Britannia and his father- the emperor Charles zi Britannia. It's very good, you either just simply love it or curse the director and mangaka for twisting your mind (like me).
Basilisk is good too. It's historical, story about two ninja family who hated each other to gut but about to put and end to that but it was put on hold because...you just have to watch it . If you hate sad ending, i recommend don't watch it but the fighting is awesome >~<
There is the Ghost Hunter, it had manga, anime but it actually is a novel that they based on. It's good, I got suck into it and could not stop (watched about 10 times already )
Infinite Ryvirus is quite good, I havent watch it yet but have heard it's quite good from my anime supplier
Lucky Star. Yes!Funny as xD
Claymore (depend if you have time)
Black Cat (supper cute main characters)
Soul Eater (manga hasn't finish yet but it's okay I guess)
Air Gear >~< so cool but the anime didn't go very far
Princess Mononoke

ANYWAY. Try Pandora Hearts. I just started watching today because I noticed it was popular on WorldCosplay, and I needed to find a new anime to watch (IT'S BEEN SO LOOONG~)
And... yeah.
Just try it.
If you like creepy-ish monsters (well, Yagami's a bit of a creep?! And you gotta admit shinigamis are creepy in a cute way...?), you'll probably like it. |
