| What sort of manga do you like?
I'd recommend any of the following:
Monster (My personal favourite.) A seinen manga; wikipedia lists it as a psychological thriller, detective fiction, drama, and horror. See more under tag.
- Spoiler:
It follows the story of Dr Kenzo Tenma, a leading neurosurgeon, as his life falls apart due to the sudden death of other hospital employees, and the disappearance of a special patient of his. He is suspected of the murders, and so must run from the law, whilst trying to hunt down the real killer. Said killer is a freaking awesome sociopath. CB
NANA A shoujo manga; wikipedia lists it as a drama, romance, and music manga. Synopsis from wikipedia under the spoiler tag.
- Spoiler:
Nana Osaki is a punk singer who wants to debut with her band, Black Stones (BLAST for short), where she is the lead vocalist and her boyfriend, Ren, is the bassist. Nana and Ren have lived together as lovers since she was 16. When Ren is offered a chance to debut in Tokyo as a replacement member of the popular band, Trapnest (Toranesu in Japanese), Nana chooses to continue on with BLAST and to cultivate her own career instead of following Ren, as she has too much ambition to simply be a rockstar's girlfriend. She eventually leaves for Tokyo at the age of twenty to start her musical career.
Nana Komatsu, the other Nana, has a habit of falling in love at first sight all the time, and depending on other people to help her. When her friends, and then her boyfriend, leave for Tokyo, she decides to join them a year later after having saved enough money at the age of twenty.
The two Nanas meet on a train by chance, both on their way to Tokyo. After a string of coincidences, they come to live together in an apartment numbered 707 (nana means "seven" in Japanese). Despite having contrasting personalities and ideals, the Nanas respect each other and become close friends.
Nana Osaki gives Nana Komatsu the nickname Hachi (after Hachikō, because she is weak-willed and has characteristics that resemble a puppy, and also as a joke since hachi means "eight" and nana means "seven" in Japanese).
While BLAST begins to gain popularity at live gigs, the two Nanas face many other issues together, especially in the areas of friendship and romance. The story of Nana revolves heavily around the romance and relationships of the two characters as one seeks fame and recognition while the other seeks love and happiness.
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad A shounen manga; wikipedia lists it as a music, romance, and slice of life manga. Synopsis from wikipedia under spoiler tag.
- Spoiler:
Yukio, known by his friends as "Koyuki", is a regular 14-year-old Japanese boy who enters junior high school with two childhood acquaintances. One is a pervert, and ironically the other is a highly sought after female student. Koyuki's boring life is changed when he saves an odd-looking dog, named Beck, from some kids. Beck's owner turns out to be an emerging rock musician, Ryūsuke Minami, who soon influences Koyuki to start playing the guitar, and even gives one to him. The story focuses on the trials and tribulations of their rock band named BECK, and Koyuki's relationships with the members of the band, in particular RyĆ»suke Minami and his sister, Maho Minami.
ES: Eternal Sabbath (This is a short one, only 8 volumes.) It would probably count as a seinen... Science fiction/drama/thriller. Wiki synopsis below tag.
- Spoiler:
ES (Eternal Sabbath) is a gene developed by a group of scientists who sought immortality. The presence of the gene grants the carrier up to 200 years of life immune from all viruses. Though the scientists' original intention was to demonstrate the feasibility of eternal life, ES unexpectedly has the additional power of mind-control and memory-alteration.
A female neurology professor, Mine Kujo, meets a man by the name of Ryosuke Akiba and discovers that he is a genetically-engineered human with the ES gene. Together, they pursue a more dangerous ES-carrier who had escaped from the research center.
xxxHoLiC Seinen. Supernatural/comedy/psychological. See more under spoiler tag.
- Spoiler:
The series' plot focuses on Kimihiro Watanuki, a high school student plagued by yōkai and ayakashi, spirits with a strong attraction to him. The spirits are invisible to others and encounters with them are extremely troublesome. When he stumbles into a shop that grants wishes, however, events in his life promise to become more unusual. The shop is owned by Yūko Ichihara, a mysterious witch of many names and esoteric renown. For a price, she offers to grant Watanuki's wish to be rid of the spirits. The price, according to Yūko, must be of equal value and so, as payment, he temporarily becomes Yūko's part-time employee. Watanuki's job consists of small errands dealing with the supernatural and household chores. Himawari Kunogi, Watanuki's love interest, and Shizuka Dōmeki, a classmate who Watanuki detests, occasionally join him in his work as per Yūko's request. The three become increasingly close despite Watanuki's annoyance with Dōmeki. Although Watanuki becomes happy with the new friendships he makes, he becomes concerned about Yūko, promising he will try to grant her wish.

| Since everyone's just tossing out personal favourites, mine are...
Chrono Crusade: it's a romance/historical/fantasy/action manga about a demon called Chrono and a nun called Rosette. Rosette's brother Joshua was kidnapped by Chrono's brother Aion when the nun was a child, and so she sold her lifespan to Chrono in exchange for his power. It's set in America in the 1920s and basically plays around with all the stuff happening in that era, like the liquor prohibition and the stock crash. Very high energy, a little bit short but quite emotional and it makes the best of its run.
World Embryo: by the same author as Chrono Crusade (Daisuke Moriyama), it's a horror/sci-fi/action story. Wombry is about a teenage boy, Riku, who has a deep love for his supposedly-dead stepsister, Amane. After receiving a text from her, he goes to an abandoned hospital and finds an egg which hatches into an infant girl who is a dead ringer for his sister. Meanwhile, metamorphosed humans who have become horrible monsters stalk Riku, hunting after his new charge. Some of the characters in Wombry-- especially the female lead, Rena-- are very stereotyped, but it's a fun story with a lot of dark twists and cool character designs, set in modern Tokyo.
Fullmetal Alchemist: do I even have to explain this one? If you haven't read it then you need to-- it's iconic, it's beautiful, and ye gods is it badass.
Doubt: Thriller/horror! There's a game called 'Rabbit Doubt' which is played via cellphones that's basically just mafia with some different labels stuck on the roles. A group of friends who play it meet up in real life to get to know each other, and go to karaoke... but are then kidnapped and taken to a mysterious building. Tattooed with barcodes, they can each only open one of the many doors inside, and they are all in the presence of a killer-- will they make it out alive? Don't read this late at night or before going to karaoke. It's not a good idea.
There are a few more recommendations I could make, but they're a bit more subjective to taste. :U |

| I'm gonna side with Alex here and also recommend Monster, I have not read the manga (Yet) but I have watched the anime and it totally blew me away, it was truly that awesome, I never seen an anime where the plot and characters are so well done and with so many twists. I hear the manga is good too, you have to read this, you won't be disappointed, trust me.
I'm also going to recommend Claymore, the anime is good but the manga is even better as it picks up where the anime left off. It's a dark/fantasy/horror, plenty of action and gore if you like that kind of thing. Plot description pulled directly from Wiki because I am lazy.
- Spoiler:
In a world where humans coexist with sentient monsters called Yoma (妖魔?) that feed on human innards, an organization has created an order of half-human, half-yoma warriors to protect humans from the yoma, for a large fee. The people of this world have dubbed these warriors "Claymores" based on their swords. They are also referred to as "Silver Eyed Witches", based on their appearance and seemingly cold nature toward others. Each Claymore has a rank number which is based on their strength and ability. There are 47 ranks corresponding to the number of regions of the land/world.
A Claymore known as Clare saves a small town by killing a Yoma living there, and meets Raki (Rocky), a boy whose parents were killed by the Yoma. Out of gratitude, Raki ends up following Clare from town to town during her Yoma-killing jobs. The two travel together until they are separated when Clare is forced to battle a sadistic Claymore named Ophelia. Before parting, Clare promises to find him if she survives. The story becomes a tale of revenge, as Clare seeks to confront someone from her past.
Now this ^^ only tells you about the anime, more about the manga below:
- Spoiler:
What is doesn't mention is the secret agenda of the organization that the Claymore work for, the manga covers this. Also in the manga there is a 7 year time skip which occurs right after where the anime left off and that is where things get interesting as the Claymore begin to discover what the organization has been hiding from them and rebel against them.
The manga is very good, I recommend this, hope you find something nice to read. |

| I'm sure 99.99999% of this community won't agree but I love these so....
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (It's epically long though): It's got a very.. particular art style that you have to get used to. It's just epically epic. I can't really tell you how it's so epic because I can't put my finger on it but it is; in my personal opinion, amazing. Crazy dudes with a bunch of cool super-powers (?) and very awesome poses XD
Another amazing piece would be....
Ultimate Survivor, Kaiji (it's also quite long): And again, weird art-style but it's a smart series and it's really well thought-out. It's super intense. SUPER intense and 'cause of the content and other various stuff in the series, I'd recommend it for a seinen audience. Oh, it also helps to know that it's about gambling but nothing like poker.
And if you liked Kaiji, you should check out all of the mangaka (Nobuyuki Fukumoto)'s other stuff. They're all generally stunning pieces of work. There's also a lot of mahjong in his work so it helps to know a bit but it's not a requirement :3 |
