| - Quote :
Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen. Let me introduce myself - you may call me Zero.
You may have noticed something different when you woke up today. Perhaps the cellphone strapped to your wrist that you couldn't get off, or the strange room in which you awoke. What I suspect you didn't notice, is the small explosive capsule resting gently against the lining of your bowels. Don't be alarmed - it won't go off... so long as you obey the rules.
In nine hours, the gas canisters I have placed in the ventilation system will activate, and you will fall unconscious, and lose your memory. We will repeat this game until someone wins. Maybe you've already played? Perhaps even more than once. And you'll keep on playing, until the game has been won.
But how do you win? Escape this place. Around you, you will see numbered doors. Somewhere behind those numbered doors lie more numbered doors. Look for the door that bears a '9' to find the exit. Find the exit, and you win the game.
Like any game though, this game has rules. To pass safely through a numbered door, you must first unlock it. Unlocking a door is done by messaging me with the number of the door you are unlocking. A minimum of three people are required to unlock a door, but no more than five people can unlock it at once. As soon as you receive my confirmation that the door has been unlocked, you will have 18 seconds to pass through the door before it will lock again.
When you pass through the door - regardless of whether you were involved in unlocking it - the detonator inside your cellphone will activate and begin its countdown. You will have 81 seconds to find the deactivation code on the other side. Everyone who unlocked the door must send this code to me, and your detonators will be deactivated and reset.
The only detonators that will be deactivated will be those that belonged to the unlockers, and only once they have all checked in. If you pass through a door without taking part in unlocking it... well. The results will be... unpleasant, as you can imagine. If you unlock a door, but do not pass through it, your detonator will not activate - but if other unlockers pass through that door, they will not be able to deactivate their detonators without you. There is no penalty for unlocking a door so long as no one passes through it.
We have gone through the physical process of unlocking numbered doors - but there is slightly more to it than that. You will notice there is a number on the screen of your cellphone. Those who want to activate a door must have numbers that combine to a root number that is the same as that on the door they wish to open.
To find the root number, add your numbers together, then add the individual digits together so you have a single digit number. For example, numbers [4], [5] and [8] added together - 4+5+8= 17, then 1+7 = 8, so [8] is the root number of [4], [5] and [8].
Those are the only rules. And before you waste your time trying - all chimneys have been blocked, and the windows have been replaced with bulletproof glass.
So what are you waiting for? Time is ticking.

Re: [LANP] "The Nonary Project" - Live Action Mystery, gauging interest By JVCA. 11/03/11, 03:45 pm |
| So what is this? I want to set up a Live Action Nonary Game. Hopefully the above little speech explained things, but basically: A Nonary Game is a game where a group of people are each assigned numbers from 1-9, and must solve puzzles to escape the building in which they are trapped.
Inspired by the DS game 999: 9 Persons, 9 Hours, 9 Doors, this LARP will essentially be halfway between an escape the room puzzle game, and a who dunnit - how do you get out? Who is Zero? What are his/her motivations?
Right now, I want to know if enough people would be interested. I need around 15 people in total - a combination of helpers and characters, but how many of each I've yet to decide, and will keep to myself as being plot relevant.
There would be a cost - unless I win lotto sometime soon, I can't afford to run it on entirely my own dosh (though I will be putting in a fair whack more than I'll ask anyone else to). Initially I estimate the cost will be between $50 - $100 for characters (and you can keep the cellphone, though they'd just be the 2degrees Motorola ones, hahah), and $30 - $60 for helpers. These costs will cover mostly venue hire and props (which I'll ask both characters and helpers to pay), and the cellphone packs (which I'll only ask the characters to pay, and they then get to keep the phones to onsell/use up the rest of the credit after the game ends). I'm hoping I can get a bulk discount for the phones, but I can't say at this point.
As for costumes/characters - we'll be using original characters, because it's easier to hide people's motives if you don't know anything about their character. The personality will be a collaboration between you and me (I want you to feel comfortable being your character, so I'd like to make your personality and your character's personality quite similar) but the back story and character relationships and what not will be my doing. Costume, however - is entirely up to you. All I'll ask is that you give me a rough description so I can fill it in on your dossier.
A few weeks before the event I'll send out proper dossiers on everything that's relevant to your character, but I'll also include the cliff notes of your character - their goals, motives, relationships, etc., on your cellphone as saved txt messages.
Any Questions? Ask and I'll add them below: "I'd like to be a character, but I'm not very good at puzzle solving and math. What do?" It's up to you, but there is a calculator on the cellphone you'll be given, and you'll get given a pen and notepad too. Teamwork is great for puzzle solving as well - I'm planning you'll only be alone when you 'wake up', and the first puzzles will be the easiest ones.

TL;DR By JVCA. 11/03/11, 03:49 pm |
| I basically need to know if it's worth the effort of planning this.
Who: Me + 15 people, dressing up as OCs rather than pre-existing characters What: Live Action Who-dunnit mystery/escape the room When: Probably January 2012, so people have enough time to save up to pay for it - depends on venue availability though Where: I'm hoping, Wharerata House - the same place as TinTango's Murder Mystery Dinner - in Palmerston North. How Long: The game will run for a maximum of 9 hours. I anticipate it will probably not be quite that long though. It ends when time is up, or when the story 'ends' for whatever reason. As long as the venue permits it, there will be food and water around - if not then we'll take a break as people need it. Obviously the more we stick with it, the more involved the story becomes.
Disclaimer: I reserve the right to veto attendees - if I do, it is nothing personal, but if I know you make someone else feel uncomfortable, I will turn you away as it's hard to concentrate on the game when you're worried about the *people* rather than the characters, hahah. I say this with much love! That said; if you are interested but are uncertain - PM me, or post in thread here - you never know until you try.
I'd be pretty keen to make a weekend of it - arrived friday night, do the game on saturday, chill out on sunday and go home sunday night/during the day on monday, but it's up to what people are game for. We could try hire a scout hall for the weekend or something? I dunno, palmy people? I'm thinking like the Timaru trip the chchers do, only with the Nonary Game instead of the Carnival.

@Selphiroth: Yes please! I'd normally bounce ideas off Alex, but he kind of wants to take part, so I can't because then he can't play. XD |

| @Rengen/BlazingBlossom: I'll put you both down as [pref help], then. n_n
@Rocky: Yay!
Just given that this is garnering interest already - a quick note on who gets priority. Because something like this involves a LOT of time and money, priority will be given to those that I know are reliable, and confirmation will be required with the venue deposit. More on that will come when I know if this will actually happen though.
I've had one question, which I'll add to the second post:
"I'd like to be a character, but I'm not very good at puzzle solving and math. What do?" It's up to you, but there is a calculator on the cellphone you'll be given, and you'll get given a pen and notepad too. | I feel so fly that I'm already on the list. Whoo Twitter! Also very excited about cosplaying an OC, I have some in mind but canon cosplays have always come first. And also if people need somewhere to stay, there's a spare room at my flat filled with mattresses, a big tv and a PS2. ALL YOU NEED. XD |

@Thread: Apparently January is peak season, so the venue is likely to be more expensive then. I'm going to send some enquiry emails today and try to gauge when would be cheapest. If it's outside of January, I'll aim for during the school holidays so no one who has to travel needs to worry about missing school. :3 |
