Painting problems
Post By Rosenquarts. 22/12/10, 06:36 am

If its in the wrong section please move it ^^

I got some craft foam from the dollar stores and only had 4 colours - red purple orange and green. The other day I started to paint something for my boyfriends birthday present and when i went to cut it out the paint started to peal away from the foam.

I don't have any pics but is there a way you can paint the foam without it pealing or would I have to get them in the right colour.

I posted it here cause I didn't know where it would go.

It's best to cut it out then paint it, and do a few coats of pva C:

It may not be, but the idea is still relevant to how to make things.

Painting craft foam ideas from this thread may help other people wanting to know how to do stuff like this.

Yeah, I haven't done it myself, but I've heard alot of people say when painting foam always give it a few coats of PVA first to seal it. Otherwise it either absorbs the paint, or it doesn't stick properly.

You can also use sealants like "Mod podge" and gesso primer (:
For my armor, I used gesso primer as a sealer and at the end I used mod podge as an after coat to make the whole thing shiny.

You basically paint the foam with a layer of glue to seal the surface. Once it's dried you can do the actual painting. Depending on the material two layers of glue may be recommended.

The method that everyone is talking about is called sealing and you use equal parts of PVA glue and water, it's to prevent the craft foam from absorbing the paint and to stop said paint from peeling/cracking etc. I'm using a tutorial that shows the method used, this is it:

Follow that and you shouldn't have any problems. Wink
