If you don't want to get into make a wire frame -

What I did was I got two beach balls (I think they were from Payless Plastics), one smaller than the other, and stuck them together. Then I folded up some newspaper and wrapped it around the join between the two beach balls for shape. On I used some rolled up newspaper and curved it into a circle, and then for a cork I just got two jar/bottle tops for the top and bottom of the cork and made the rest of the shape with newspaper.

Once all the basic shapes were made it was paper mache time! 8D Basically I just put paper machine over the entire thing. I think I sat the base of the gourd in a large bowl so that it wouldn't move around.

After a few layers of paper mache, it was spray painted a sandy colour. (We hung it from our garage ceiling with some string around the middle of it so we could get all sides of it.) The cork was just painted brown by brush though.

My sister painted the details on, but I think she made some kind of stencil and just used black and yellow acrylic paint to add them. :3

Oh, and I just stuck the cork on with hot glue. (If you can get anything stronger, I would recommend it. >_>; The cork fell off, gah!)
