| As some of you may or may not be aware, at around 2pm this afternoon Christchurch was hit by another TWO earthquakes plus several aftershocks ranging between 5.0 and 6.0
Just sending out my thoughts and well wishes to all of you down that way, particularly so close to christmas, also willing to offer a couple of beds if anyone wants to get out of the shaky city even for a few days. |

| Thanks <3
I think we're all just glad no one was killed, and damage wasn't as bad. Hope my fellow Chchers are all ok, and are managing to get some sleep despite the shaky ground. |

| Well, I was at the hairdressers when the 5.8 and 6.0 aftershocks happened, but I'm safe and unharmed. I just wish they would stop! >_< |

| ^Just wait till you're in a decent one. Nothing you learned in school really helps XD Except for maybe the need to survive by diving under a desk/doorway |

Except for maybe the need to survive by diving under a desk/doorway I agree Mandie - I got told by all of my university lecturers last year to just leave all our stuff and get under the desks quick as. |

| ^pretty much.
Though there is that moment when you hear it of thinking 'How big will it get?' 'can I just wait it out?' 'do I need to duck and cover?' It's quite funny to think just how fast the brain reacts as soon as it knows there's an earthquake/aftershock coming. |

Exactly - and I'm slowly getting back into the mood of sleeping through the aftershocks now. |

Re: 22.02.11 Earthquakes - A year on. By Auroa. 22/02/12, 10:03 am |
| One year on guys. One year and look what we've come from!
I'm putting this on a site, and thought I'd take a snipped to share with you guys too. For those that don't know, I lost my Uncle and Optometrist a year ago due to the Quake.
- Spoiler:
We stand next to strangers, inside the Cordoned area, standing on the gravel where the Church once stood. There is one road cone placed in the middle as we form a circle. A bucket is next to it with several roses inside. Three Roses lay next to it. The Reverend introduces herself, and says why we are here "...these three roses, represent the three who died here." They are placed on top of the Cone. Prayers are said. She looks at her watch, "its 10 to 1pm. Let us all reflect, before we observe 2 minutes silence." The Road Workers across the Road have stopped, they are standing in the middle of the road, watching us. Other people look in through the fence. One man, stands alone next to the flowers on the Cordoned Fence, where the entrance to the Church once was.
The City stops, as the time hits 12.51. The echo of a bell in the distance can be heard, a Chime for each one who has been lost. The Chime, the only sound that can be heard, no hammers, no planes, no cars, not even a bird, even the wind has stopped. 185 Chimes, for 185 lives.
"I invite you all, to take a rose, and place it down next to the cone." One by one, members from our circle gather. I watch, as a Road Worker crosses the road, he comes through the gap into the Cordon, he takes his helmet off his head, holding it close to his chest. He bends down and picks a rose up, placing it down next to the cone. He stays with us. His fellow workmates remain at the road, their heads down.
After, as some leave, and some stay to talk. The Reverend comes up to us. "Did you see that man, by the flowers at the entrance?" I look, but he is gone. She continues, "he is a Security Guard of the building across the road. He saw the Church collapse. He was the first on the scene." The talking continues, I miss it all, thinking about that man. Then I look up, to see the Road Worker has gone back too. I had wanted to thank them both. But as quick as they had appeared, they were gone. I tune back into the conversation, in time to hear the Reverend's parting words. "Its people working together, which will rebuild Christchurch."
We walk out, along the fence, passing the entrance. We pause, there are more flowers then before! Flowers from people that had passed by, we never saw. But, what catches our eye, is right in the center, a large card. The names of the three lost are written "in memory" signed: Christchurch Security.
I had always heard "a disaster brings people together" ... but you really don't understand that phrase until you really do experience it. People have so much bad press these days: violence, thieves, murders... sometimes you forget the kindness and compassion complete strangers can truly have for one another. A small act, even just the thought, goes a long way.
Anyway, just wanted to share it. I hope you guys in Chch are doing okay! Also, thanks to everyone in this thread, who posted updates, support, offers of accommodation and help, and thoughts. I love you guys! |
