Auckgeddon Lodgings By IcyRose. 15/07/08, 02:43 pm |
| Ok, so I was talking about accommodation with Wissy about where we will be staying at Auckgeddon and I came up with the idea of seeing if we could see if we could get a large number of us to try book out an entire dorm over at a backpackers somewhere in Auckland (The ADP basically did the same thing at Chchgeddon). One of the main things my Mum has issues with me going to Auckland is that I've never been there, and now I'm basically going alone. So I reckon it'd be a good idea to basically stay in good company with the rest of us that have to travel to Auckland.
So basically I'm curious to see how many people would be keen on contributing to this idea?
EDIT: As explained in my more recent posts, I'm compiling a list of people for dorms at ACB Backpackers. Here is the list so far.
I have also added in the number of days we are intending to stay and the starting and final night we stay to figure out where the largest overlap is. Also it would pay to note that it costs $26 per night (or through group discounting, $23.40 if we get more than 10 people which we're aiming to go over). For more information you can click here
Everyone has paid now. So it would seem I no longer need to keep track of things. Let's hope all goes to plan and we have fun.

| that would be great, I'm going up with two others who don't use this forum (to my knowledge) and we have no idea where to stay. We were thinking of using some of those entertainment book vouchers to get a cheap hotel, but that may still be quite expensive... don't know ... |

| Depending on how much it costs, I might even consider staying with you guys, even though I live in Auckland: it's still about an hour to get there from where I live, heheh. n_n; |

| This was the place Wissy pointed me to: http://www.finda.co.nz/business/listing/q467/kiwi-international-queen-street-hotel-hostel/
I also looked through all the cheapest backpackers and motels and this proved to be the cheapest of the lot, however I am open to any suggestions for locations that are potentially quicker in terms of closeness to the con or just quality of living space.
$20 per night per person seems to be the cheapest we're going to get, I'd say something around the area of $20 - $30 would be desirable (well I probably wouldn't pay THAT much) |

| I'd be up for the idea, I usually tend to get a private room, but that's mostly because I don't trust my gear being in a room full of complete strangers. Plus there's the locking up gear during the day aspect aswell. Forumers on the other hand I do kinda know, so um, yeah. :)
PS: what ya mean going alone? There's going to be half the forumers there! |

| Rechecked the pricing of dorms we used at Chchgeddon, they were $30 per night, so something between $20-$30 would be good. |

| Yeah i normally stay at Kiwi International Aswell, but I was debating looking into the Auckland Backpackers since I'm pretty sure some of the cosplayers stayed there last year and reckoned it was OK. The single room pricing was comparable to Kiwi International aswell, but without the big walk up the hill at the end of the day. (Kiwi International is near the top of queen street - easy walk down in the morning, bit of a hike up in the evening, but easy enough).

| http://www.travelbug.co.nz/accommodation/Auckland/Auckland?types=backpackers&rl=50&ru=300&sort=bugrank This is were you can see other backpackekrs and hostels in auckland.
there is $18 one which is Conor's Topfloor Hostel although... someone commented it smells funky and facilities are fairly lacking.
May be we can send enquiry email about pricing of borrowing dorms to all the hostels perhaps??? XP |

| Well, I live in Auckland, around an hours drive from the city center in heavy-ish traffic. I'd be willing to provide lodgings for 1-2 people. Of course, Id actually have to tidy the place up *gasp*. And, of course, you'd have to put up with me.
Yanno what, nevermind. Putting up with me for too long is nigh impossible, and my flat is totally open plan, so there is like zero privacy XD |

| We haven't 100% decided yet, we're hoping to make a road trip out of it (if petrol doesn't get too expensive in the next few months) and we'll leave here early wednesday morning and arrive thursday afternoon, I can't speak for my mates though, they may still prefer to get a private hotel for a little more $$, but this is certainly an interesting idea |

| *youch* yeah, road trip will be very expensive. getting a car across on the ferry is pretty expensive by itself. It's almost cheaper to fly Chch -> Wgtn on one of the cheapie fares and then rent a car for the drive up. You could also potentially try for a cheapie fare from Auck straight back too, but road trips can be fun in themselves. :) |

Re: Auckgeddon Lodgings By jpwise. 15/07/08, 03:37 pm |
| I'll be driving back down from Whangarei (visiting folks) on the Friday, so depending on how many people are arriving on Friday and the flight times i might be able to give some people a lift from the airport too if they're happy to spring a few dollars towards petrol money. Up to 3 people comfortably depending on how much baggage is squeezed into the boot. 4 if people want to get cosy in the back seat. But depends on times of day people arrive vs when I get to Auck.
(also don't expect me to necessarily take a direct route, there might be the occasional detour - auckland motorways are horrible if you don't know them. i don't know them) |

Yeah it will be something like $550 for return ferry for 3 with a car,... plus about 4-5 tanks of petrol.... at what, $120 each.... (plus accommodation for the two nights on the road) heh, but yes! the point is that the road trip itself will be fun

I'm borrowing my fathers tomtom for this, but I'm still really nervous about driving in Auckland... I might not even do any of the driving closer to the city... >_< |

| im aiming to get to auckland on thursday, im traveling via Wellington and i plan to leave there Tues or Wednesday.
having everyone staying in the same dorm sounds pretty awesome, i was planning to stay with an old flatmate like i did last time, he lets me stay for free, but this sounds more fun and the money isnt too important. |

Re: Auckgeddon Lodgings By IcyRose. 27/07/08, 01:37 pm |
| Update on the dorm matter.
I've looked up the Auckland Central Base Hostel at seraphik's request. (Details found here) They have up to a 12 Bed Mixed Dorm available at $26 per night. So basically I'm wanting people to tell me if they are definitely on board for this so I can arrange bookings for how many dorms we might need.
First goal is to obviously fill up one dorm so our initial list will be for 12 people will add another list for another dorm once the 12 bed dorm is full:
EDIT: List moved to first post for easy viewing.

Does the geddon thing count as 2 nights or 3? o_O I know it's sleeping 2 nights, but what time do you have to clear out on the last day? |
