Bendy plastic stuff that cools hard? By Willuknight. 20/04/10, 11:43 am |
| Is there some sort of plastic stuff that is bendy when you heat it up, but it cools down to be hard? |

| How bendy? Also what kinds of shapes and sizes? Probably some of the best stuff that comes to mind if you're looking for sheets of the it would be Sintra. It's a kind of plastic (technically "Closed-cell PVC foamboard") that you can heat in hot/boiling water, shape how you want and then cool down to maintain the shape. You can reheat and reshape if it doesn't work right too, which is a bonus |

| Sounds like what I'm after - or at least along those lines.
It's not going to go all flexible on a hot day is it? And what sort of thickness is it? I'm wanting to make armour out of it.
Also where do you buy it from? |

Also where do you buy it from? I don't have any on hand to test the heat range of it but I think that unless you're in some real high temperature situations you should be fine. Another couple of options, though slightly harder to get good bends out of (but still possible), would be either styrene (HIPS) or ABS sheet. I know quite a few people use sintra to make Boba and Jango Fett armour out of and most look pretty nice too.
Off the top of my head, since I just posted it in another thread, you could try Mulford Plastics: http://www.mulford.co.nz/ According to their site it looks like they've got a store in ChCh, failing that they could probably tell you somewhere nearby that'd have something suitable. They might even be able to suggest a better product to use |
