Death Note-esque anime recs, anyone? By Guest. 17/03/10, 10:47 am |
| Hey cosplayers,
My brother just finished Death Note and rang me up from Dunedin to rant about how awesome it was. He's very, very picky about the anime he watches, and so far I have only been able to persuade him to watch Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist. Now he's looking for a new series, and I was hoping you fellow experienced anime watchers could rec me a few. His "conditions" are:
-NOT for kids (he's 22, so...) -Comedy not the central focus, if present -If possible some kind of "detective show" feel like The Wire and Dexter
To be honest, he basically wants something exactly the same as Death Note. Dx Only not.
He's already veto'd most of my suggestions, so any of yours would be much appreciated. 8D It would be cool to suck him into our awesome, secluded anime world, but he still needs a bit of convincing haha.
The ones I've thought of so far are Eva, Code Geass (I know that like "the new Death Note" but it might be a little too young/fanservicy/comedy for him, at least in the beginning), maybe Cowboy Bebop/Trigun/some of those Golden Oldies?
So, yeah. Um. Thanks in advance, guys. Let's all try and bring another poor sucker into the fold.

| Err...I don't know...Eden of the East is very good..it's got elements of mystery and it does remind me of Death Note for some reason...but that's just me, probably. I haven't watched all that much anime yet so I can't really help /: |

| Golden oldies like Trigun got my non-anime friend to watch anime. You could try Ghost in the Shell if he likes things that requires much thinking. Also Denno Coil. Its not a well known anime, but it is one of the most best anime programmes ever and I'd recommend it to my grandma. |

Yeah, Dennou coil is AWESOME. I dunno, Higurashi counted as detective-esque? ... Kara no Kyoukai. KARA NO PHYSICS KYOUKAI. Akagi and Kaiji for the mindrape factor, its hugely psychological as the main characters must throw their lives on the line to win and survive. |

Monster, Legend of Galactic Heroes, Serial Experiments Lain come to mind.

| I'm thinking whether LoGH and Monster will have too slow of a pace for some. I mean, LoGH dedicates entire EPISODES to go over histories and how the characters plan their moves. Such awesomeness. |

| Still, when your conditions are serious detective-style series, Monster really does spring to mind, even if it is 74 eps long. From what I can tell, Himitsu - The Revelation might also fit the bill.
I also want to say Umineko or Higurashi, but I get the feeling he might not take much interest in those. Also if he's in Dunedin, I would suggest checking up ADP, but I get the feeling he might not like what our playlist has to offer. |
