It is early evening, dusk in the street, husky purple, the smell of slumbering spring in its breath, pedestrians scuttling, wind gushing with umbrellas padding the skies.

Listen. It is evening stomping up Heretaunga Street, office doors closing, street lights sleepily flickering, sodden smog traveling over supermarket and corner shop. Sunset, dusk, the chorus of car horns, clunk and click, tramping home.

It is Tuesday night. The door of the nameless Fish and Chip shop jangles open, red white checkered table cloths swish in response, two underpaid staff glumly pick at cell phone buttons. Oil cackles in the sea-shelled stove, the till tinkles tiredly, walls sweat.

And the orders are placed one by one as the rain dribbles down both sides of the window pane.

Newspaper caresses salty sharp bundles: a wrapping of spent heroes floating in fifteen minute fame amongst biased text. Provincial pleas diminish, raising tension for the rock salt stars behind the chipped and chipped counter, who in turn spread their woes to the tired hunched home goers, to the waddling cockroaches out of site from health and safety eyes.

Look. On the table behind the hat stand, magazines with faces of antique glitterati on the covers stare dog-eared. Out the back, staff abandon the operation of frying, cats scavenge in the dustbin for fishy filth, flying sirens, and down below in the street, the casino opens its gambling doors to provide salacious smut, fluked fortune, and lucre gained and lost from machines that arrived in the innocent hours.

And soon you will be sitting on padded car seats. Warmth, grease and ink spread themselves on your lap; stolen silent chips are shared fueling the journey home with cholesterol pleasure. The mood of the car is lifted above the grim exterior streetscape now fading under the smog streaked evening. Bliss.

But, on the subject of fish and chips, has anyone noticed how you ALWAYS call it fish and chips, whether you get fish or not? I dont even eat fish, and i still call it that...

too true. too true. i suppose 'paua patty and chips' or 'donut and chips' don't sound as catchy as fish and chips. i mean there is that song praising the meal, fish and chips. YEAH!
