Vampire Chronicals? By Cassiel. 20/12/09, 08:18 am |
| I just finished Queen of the Damned!
Definitely page turners, I stayed up until 5:00am today and yesterday to finish the second and third books. They're just OMFG so good.
So uh.... discuss?
I still have a special place in my heart for Interview, as its bleak and almost philosophical on what eternity might actually be like. I did feel that the second half of Vampire Lestat disintegrated somewhat into nothing more than a fanciful story. - Spoiler:
I wasn't too keen on finding out the actual origins of the vampires, I thought it cheapened the mystery and the dispair that Louis and Claudia felt
Minor spoiler about vampire powers
- Spoiler:
And I'm still boggling over vampires with telekenises, pyrokenesis, and the ability to fly? WTF?

| True, true. Everything owns Twilight!

I know. It is freaky and makes no sense. I think Anne Rice was just halfway through QoD and was like "meh, I think I'll do THIS..."
So far, I think my favourite is a draw between IWTV and The Vampire Lestat. QoD jumps around a bit too much for me.
I read the Chronicles up till Memnoch the Devil, which got too touchy-feely and metaphysical for me.
- Spoiler:
Like Lestat just got all good and saint-like and I chucked the book down screaming WHAT THE HELL OOC much???. I could keep reading but... Eh. ]

But... But... Movies are so. I dunno... Not in keeping? Like in IWTV, Armand is tall and dark-haired and in the books he's auburn-haired and an adolecent boy. It's a bit wierd.
Saying that, I saw the first movie before I started reading, so I guess I can't talk. But also, the QoD movie is a strange hybrid rehash of The Vampire Lestat. It changes a heap of things that didn't need to be changed. |

| IwtV is a pretty good movie, and keeps to the books a lot more than Queen of the Damned. Sure, Armand might not look a lot like he does in the books (Santiago though- yikes!), but the character isn't too far off what he was like in that particular book. QotD is just... I loved it when I was a wannabegothkid, but it's pretty bad. It didn't have the same feel whatsoever as the book.
As for the books themselves, I've read them all. At one point in my life, I absolutely loved them, they are definitely easy to read. I can't think of which one I liked the most, probably Blood and Gold (I really do love the Armand/Marius relationship, creepy as it is), and I can't remember if it's in the main continuity or not.
Now, I think the series is decent enough, even though I probably won't read the books again. |

| I agree with you there. QotD is so... wierd compared to the books. It misses nuances... Anyway. I agree with you: I'm not an Anne Rice groupie. I thought they were good while I read them, but, in my opinion, they're kind of one-read books, not the ones you can just come back to over and over. I think they're good to have read though, saying that. I mean, they're kind of the basis of modern vampire-cult fiction--you can't have not read them XD |
