| ahuhu RUROUNI KENSHIN (Samurai X)
WATCH THE SUB >| because the female VA who does kenshin has the best battle cries
ARRRRRRRGH its so cool but its only good up till the Shishou arc (the mummy dude =w=;;) after that its mostly fillers and not very good ones at that reason why the anime is unfinished. If you watch it and like it read the manga which is awesome <3~
and while i personally am not an action fan either (well i will watch some but i mostly dont really like it)
other anime you might like are Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (though it is sort of parody heavy so =w=;; - but think school girls full of eccentricities = amusing)
another light hearted but touching anime is Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight (about a student council in a dying high school and their preparation for the cultural festival ... what can i say the cute drawing style is adorable <3~)
and also Ichigo Mashimaro (about an older sister and her younger sister and her friends)
Minami-ke might also be good (anime about the daily life of 3 sisters as the oldest sister takes care of them all) |

| Based upon what you've said (which aint that much ), lets go with the following:
Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (you'll probably like this) Aria the Animation (Light-hearted, story driven, the antithesis to 'action' perhaps) Cromatie High School (School Comedy) Azumanga (School Life) Nastume Yuujijouou (Drama, Supernatural) Seto no Hanayome (School, Comedy, Mermaids) School Rumble (school comedy) Jungle wa Itsumo Hale, Nochi Guu (comedy, very peculiar) Kaleido Star (Drama, Circus)
When I first started watching anime (bar pokemon/dragonball z/etc), rather, actively seeking it out, these were some of the things I watched (and liked). Mostly stuff that was either languishing in the back of the video-store, just showing up on video with Madman for the first time, or what could be prised from the internets grasp (no filesharing or torrents in the old days. Just banners and 'click here to vote')
.Hack//Sign (A polarising show. Many people wouldn't recommend it as a 'first', though of course I saw it pretty early on. Excellent music and visuals, story driven, and a somewhat slower pace than many shows) Love Hina (Perhaps not the 'original' per se, but the genre defining show for 'harem', namely one guy, many girls. Much better than how it sounds. Lots of awkward situations, comedy, slightly fantastical moments (flying sea-turtles)) the Original Ah! My Goddess OVA + Movie (dramatic, supernatural, love) Noir (assassins/drama) Angelic Layer (Mind controlled doll battles) Serial Experiments Lain (wut?) Evangelion (...) DNA^2 (Time travel/comedy/Mega-Playboy) Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 (Ignore title. Hot wimmins in power-armour fighting technological monstrosities) Slayers (quintessential fantasy) Martian Successor NADESICO (Space-action-comedy) Hand Maid May (Predicament comedy, robotic maid) Excel Saga (Genre Parody/Comedy)
You can also see what I like more specifically HERE.

Cromatie, Azumanga, Seto no Hanayome: slice of life anime ... funny is all i can say 8D
School Rumble = <3~ its an awesome shoujo anime |

| Just a suggestion, but what do you like watching normally? (Non-anime wise.) That may be a little help. |
