| What are you interested in? e.g. genre wise (categorically) / scenario wise (thematically) / character-world design wise (visually) / music-seiyuu wise (audibly) / etc etc
As long as you know what you want-ish to see, then it shouldn't make any difference really whether you are 'noob' or not. You will enjoy it nonetheless ъ(`ー゜) (Though, the only genre that would be advisable to avoid at this stage are parody-heavy series, for obvious reasons) |

| If I were you, I'd go for the stereotypical shounen before branching off int other areas. :Db
But not Naruto. You will soon realise that there's so much better things than Naruto out there.
Why not try Fullmetal Alchemist?
This is Rolly, btw. |

| @ H-idenshi That's just the thing, I don't really know. I don't like action, though. I know that. >_<
@ Rolly I know Naruto isn't any good... >_> It's not really my scene anyways. |

I guess Natsume Yuujinchou might be a good one, hmm. |

It is the series I use to convince others that their lives are empty until they have watched it. |

| I personally recommend: Azumanga Daioh (comedy) xxxHoLic (it's hard to classify...) Paradise Kiss (romance/drama/fashion) Monster (mystery/possibly some action) Negima?! (ohlol, but this is a softened version of a harem anime so you may not like it. xD) Shaman King (shounen. 8D; I highly recommend.)
That's all I can think of right now. P: |

| O.K. avoiding too much fighting/action. Many series are comedic. Then there are the serious ones. Often both. And you can get quite horrific ones. Blood everywhere, very vamp or goth, or whatever.

Love Hina? MoHS is a fast paced comedy. See if you like it and I/we can recommend more form there. Definitely try Love Hina. It is like a teen sitcom comedy. I like it. Something different from western stuff, well they both are. Please Teacher is another one, awkward teen slapstick romance one. Between Love Hina and Please Teacher you will pick up a lot of the typical type of Japanese Gags used in that Genre.

- Cowboy Bebop
One Piece (Just because I love it) Cowboy bebop is different and cool, but then if you don't like action ... Although there is not that much action. Have not seen FMA, but assume it is action. One piece is very funny, but does have big fight scenes, though you could FF through some of them. It is the closest to Pokemon.
I would also suggest Wolfs Rain, a buddy movie, though slightly on the depressed side, and a sad end. Lovely graphics though.
Otogi Zoshi The first arc (three DVD's) have a fair amount of fighting. Set in old Japan. But things get interesting because the story ends unfinished, and the second three are set in modern Japan. It then gets all spiritual, and they piece the story back together, and end it. One of the best Anime of all time.
Maybe the .Hack series (eg. .Hack//Sign, etc. I have not seen/read much of them yet. But although they are based in a online role-playing game the violence seems to very throughly take a back seat to the whole mystery surrounding the story.
Then you have the really heavy ones, that you have to try to follow. Very imaginative. Like Serial Experiments Lain and BoogiePop Phantom for example. So they are out there, but probably not the first thing you should be looking at.
On a middle ground you could try Witch Hunter Robin. It has action, but until the end not large action scenes. Cool visuals, and characters, cool plot, an excellent series. Serious, but not mind bending.
If you want ones for a slightly younger audience I can think of several, but all have some action. Stellvia for example. The action is not fighting. But the cadets are being taught to pilot space craft. Still maybe worth a look to see if it is the sort you like. Then I/we can recommend others.
Younger still: Pokemon/Digimon or younger still Cardcaptor Sakura. Or superpig. All good series.
Movies: The girl who leapt through time. A very feel good movie, cute, but interesting as you have to keep track of the jumps in the plot. Voices from a distance star. A love story, the space faring equivalent of letter writing. Also short.
Sure I will think of some more latter. |

Re: Anime foar noobs. By H-idenshi. 05/01/10, 04:38 pm |
| With a very wide and open selection to choose from, I'd for someone new to said media format, personally choose older classics which have continued to expand their franchise/genre over time to the present day. (e.g. Gundam). That way no matter what your age (/generation based ideological standing) be there is likely a branch to suit your tastes.
Anyhow, putting that aside and throwing action out the door... What about something like Card Captor Sakura? (the BluRay edition was recently released as well... you know you want to watch, yess, yessss you do Ψ(`∀ยด)Ψ) |

Yeah I was just saying, since he does not know what he likes, that there is such wide range there. Not suggesting he watches it unless he later decides to. I have not mentioned the likes of Elfin Liad, Le Portrait De Cosette, etc, either. Many of the younger people are quite up to these, but I think he is too young to be nudging in that direction yet, until he decides he wants to. Not to metion the R18 sticker on Cosette.
And correct me if I am wrong but Lexy is a boy. I know many people mis-state their sex, but think Lexy is male. |

I haven't watched any of those, he said no action so i spawned from the top of my head these which are on my "to watch list" over the past 4-5 years. I like action so i don't know much non action series i like parodic (lolisnotanactualword) series also like Gintama. |

"heard of Japanese cartoons? Well try Violence Jack and Urotsukidoji on for size" and I'd happily oblige. Oh dear. Oh Dear. I don't think Lexicon strikes me as the sort of kid to try that approach out on. There have to be some limits.
- Rod Drill wrote:
- Yeah you want to avoid action at the risk of having too much fun. You need to watch the real anime, like Love Hina.
Hey calm down. Lexicon stated he did not want action, whatever that means by that. And as an older guy I think a lot of the so called action stuff is just crap. And a lot of it could have been done better too. Love Hina is just plain funny and likable. Otherwise I would have mentioned Inuyusha, and Kenshin as good ones for him. Actually Lexy give Rurouni Kenshin a try anyway? The action sequences tend to be short anyway.
- Admin wrote:

Or anything by Ken Akamatsu for that matter. I don't see why not, but I guess you know him better. But if neither us nor Lexy know what he likes we are kind of shooting in the dark here. So I was just trying to suggest a little of everything. |
