Dummy account for rant forum?
Post By Cassiel. 24/12/09, 04:13 pm

Generally if you rant on the internet you're guaranteed anonymity -- and therefore you can have a greater freedom of expression.

However, here on CNZ people know the face behind the avatar, and therefore there can be things that perhaps people wish to rant about but want to do it anonymously/not have this particular thing associated with them.

Would it be a viable idea to have a dummy account that people can log into to post their rant?

-Nods- yeah, that's a problem. I would think you could give it a trial run on the honour system, but if it didn't work then disable it. I can't think of any other way to make it work.

Oh btw Merry Christmas Duckeh ;)

This idea has a sound premise, but is unworkable in practice. People tend to be less restrained when they believe they are truly anonymous, and in our rants section I honestly don't think less restraint is a good idea. It is already almost totally unrestrained as it is.

My main issue is that every person by nessecity must be accountable for their posts. If you open that particular section up to guest posting, it will soon become flooded with trolls and flamers. The problem also applies to an open account - tbh, people already rant about things that are better taken elsewhere, and this would just make it worse.

Truthfully? Creature124 and Duckeh have pointed out the main problems here - but otherwise: If people DON'T want to us (as in CNZ) to associate them with their rants, then the simplest solution is just to rant about it somewhere CNZ can't see it. sweatdrop

I honestly suggest that people who want to rant but don't want us to know that it's them should go and set up a livejournal account - or if they want exposure, then they can post an FML or something. Sorry if this sounds blunt, but I just don't think here is the place for less restraint.

The other issue I see with it is that people of lesser maturity (sadly we do have them here, though they are few) would take advantage of the anonymity to make personal attacks against other forum members without fear of punishment - because if we don't know who they are, then we can't force any repercussions for bad behaviour. :/

I do understand why the idea sounds good, but I personally (obviously if the other mods all approve then I'm not gunna stop it from happening or anything) don't think it's suitable for these forums, sorry. sad

There's a good website to post things on that's entirly annoymous. I forgot what it was called though ... Hurr. I'd suggest going to something like that.

I think the main problem would be that say if CNZ member #1 hated CNZ #2, then #1 would start a thread going "#2 is a bitch", which would create huge amounts of drama.

Have we learned nothing from 4chan? Razz

There's no unreasonable restraint on here anyway, and like Jess says, if you don't want CNZers to see your rant, put it someplace else. That's another thing about the internet - in addition to being totally anonymous, nothing is secret (or sacred!) and people can find out. And IP addresses can be tracked Razz

Im with Jess on this. Greg, Jess and Shannon make valid logical points.
Yes, it could of been a good idea But I do not agree with going on with the idea.
