Fiberglass sword help By Mandie_Chan. 27/10/09, 08:14 am |
| hello wonderful people of CNZ whom may be able to help me ^_^
For Chch I am planning on doing Illua from FF:TA2 and she has a sword >_>; I figure I should attempt to make it and it seems that fiberglass is one of the ways it can be done. (if you have other suggestions on how to make a sword I would also appreciate it~)
um so... how does one go about making a fiberglass sword? Where would one get materials or is it something I have to make at a workshop? Anyone got any tips on how to make a sword?
Thank you in advance~
yea I know we were talking about it on the plane back to chch but i can't remember what was said T_T |

| OH! I KNOW THIS!!!
I made Space Marine armour out of fibreglass.
The gallery isn't up to scratch, and most of the armour was left rough, to make it look dented and battle worn, but the backpack-life support i did smooth off.
First thing first: anything made with fibreglass is going to be heavy. Also it will require alot of physical effort.
Just for an estimate: A sturdy longsword would require about 2 layers of fibreglass. It would weigh roughly around 1kg. This is WITHOUT anything inside the sword. Illua's sword would probably weigh atleast double this.
Fibreglass may be the best thing to go with for a perfect result, but something like Balsa/Plywood/MDF Board would be an Cheaper, easier, and lighter option.
PS - Please don't be put of by my comments, I will be glad to help you out the best I can with fibreglassing. |

| hm... This is good to know! (and don't worry you haven't put me off just yet) I'm currently looking into many options and which would be best. It just so happened Fiberglass was the one I couldn't find much information on.
Thank you both~ |

| One thing I forgot to mention is Fibreglassing is expensive. Always try and get you materials from someone who specializes in fibreglass. I got my resin and glass cloth from a guy who does pools and car bodies. It cost me about $400 for materials for the suit - and I had a bit left over (great for other things!). To get the same from Mitre 10 would've been atleast $800 to $1000. |

| After helping with the glowing sword for the farseer outfit, perspex tends to be quite easy to work with, as long as you have the power tools. Only problem is the thinner it gets the more fragile it gets. |

| and yeah speaking from the safety perspective after having a tutorial on fibreglass for my polymers class
1. wear a mask 2. wear goggles 3. if you dont have a ventilator do it in a VERY well ventilated area i mean it is called glass for a reason and it will shred up your lungs 4. ask for more safety info from the people selling it 8D 5. wear gloves
you can never be too careful with this stuff <3 though ive never used it before |

| Yes, the glowing sword was the blue one. It wasn't too difficult to shape with an angle grinder. |

| Another thing, if you do use fibre glass, you will want an inverse mold as the side that is against the mold will be smooth, whereas the side not covered will be rough. For a sword the fibreglass itself shouldn't be too expensive, your main expense will be the resin. |
