Cosplay Ball Dresses By _BlazingBlossom_. 16/08/09, 10:03 am |
| So for Auckgeddon I am going to make two ball dress cosplays, but you see the problem is I have never tried to make a ball dress before. So if anyone has any handy tips/tricks or experience to know how these dresses work or makes them look nice, please share. I would be most grateful.
Ball Dress One: Kozue Rose Bride/Utena Very bad full dress picture - https://i.servimg.com/u/f82/14/22/27/08/series10.jpg A better view of how the top works - https://i.servimg.com/u/f82/14/22/27/08/series11.jpg
Worries: For the bottom half of the dress. How would I exactly give it that poofy, full look? Instead of an ordinary flat hanging material dress? Petticoat?
Ball Dress 2: C.C Empress/Code Geass
Dress full view - https://2img.net/h/i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/jinty7/felzrb.jpg But it will be in these colours since I am going with the artbook version - https://2img.net/h/i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/jinty7/lc-kimura-tiaose-.jpg
Worries: Um...a bit embarrassing, but how would a make the dress sit on my breast while not falling down and revealing all? Would I have to create the dress a special way? It's pretty low as it shown here - https://2img.net/h/i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/jinty7/1z4ebkx.jpg
I think this is the long post i have ever posted .
Anyways everyone help is appreciated SO SO much

| For the poofiness of the Utena skirt you will need a hoop skirt and a petticoat to go over that. Out of both I personally go with the Utena one - easier to make and probably less likely to fall off. But if you want to go with the 2nd dress then I think there is some dress tape or some sort of tape/glue designed to keep things like this up that you can get. Not sure what it's called but saw it a few years ago - check out Farmers or Arthur Barnetts/Ballyntyes what ever equivalent you have where you live. |

| sakura's right - Victorian petticoats are best for that extra poof. if you can't be bothered making one (trust me, it's a mission) you can hire them from costume places. (: |

| C.C. one = TAPE. I'm not kidding. You can get specially made double sided tape designed to keep dresses on your boobs xDD. It amused me so much when I found out about it (was in with my sister's junk xDD). Utena dress = Hoop skirt and petticoat. Or ALOT of petticoats, but a hoop sounds like less hassle ... Unless trying to transport said hoop xD. |

| You can get hooped petticoats on trademe- brides get them for under a gown then sell them off cheap- they are great fo a dramatic poof.
Also you can fold most of them up quite small for travel, the metal is springy.

| Transporting a hoop skirt isn't all that difficult - it collapses onto itself so can stay flat at the bottom of the suitcase. Also you would only need to give a shake to right itself - pretty practical things hoop skirts - they had to be to last all those years in fashion history. If you want to make your own hoop skirt, instead of hiring for the weekend then there are great easy tuts online about making them out of garden hose! |

| Thanks so much for replying everyone <3 I looked up hooped petticoats on trademe and the cheapest one I can find it $70 compared to $200 odd, but it looks perfectly fine and intact. It seems still a bit expensive to me, should I try to create one myself? Lol boob tape. I will try, as long as it doesn't hurt me or destroy them forever xD. |

| I've put a lot more tape on mine open shirt binding and they're still intact, the fashion tape for your dress wont do anything |

| Oh excellent. I'm reassured now~ Thankyou! This is much cheaper. It may have been the keywords I was searching that didn't give me any good results. |

| So are you planning on making and wearing both or just one? If choosing between them then I'd say go for the Utena one especially if is your first time making one of these simply because it's easier.
Tape sounds painful! x_x |

Yeah that would be great if you could have two ball dresses and the C.C. one is nicer anyway plus it matches with my one. (Well kind of).
I'm going as Princess Euphemia to the ball but I'm trying to decide between her normal princess dress or her wedding dress. It will probably be the normal one as I don't think I can afford the wedding one (Not good enough at sewing to make either). It's a shame because the wedding dress is that much more epic but her normal one is pretty too. I've just realized that if I do her normal dress it will be boofy so maybe I should keep an eye on this thread. I will probably get Lucy to commission it so maybe she can help me out there. |

Not that I've ever tried it, but double sided tape would be alot less painful that duck/electrical tape that some people use to fully bind their boobs with .__. |

Re: Cosplay Ball Dresses By Static. 16/08/09, 01:28 pm |
| Hmm. I would vote the second one, lol...just to be different The safest way to have a dress that sits that low stay where you put it is to bone the bodice, and use boobehtape. It's called Hollywood tape in the shops, most chemists have it, as well as some clothing places. Lingerie shops maybe, I think I've seen it in the Bendon store? But yeah - worrying about your boobs popping out can really stop you enjoying yourself, so if you have any concerns, go with the first :) |

| i haven't read the other posts in this thread, but when i was designing my sister's C.C. empress dress, i was planning to base the top off of a corset or bodice, which will not fall down if it's fitted right (and if you're worried, go with static's plan above). i don't know how much help that is, but uh. yeah.

Re: Cosplay Ball Dresses By Highlander. 19/08/09, 12:26 pm |
| Long live the Rose Bride. I will love you forever, but not like I don't anyway. Sakura and I are going to start a RG Utena marathon before Geddon.
Also yeah trying to remember the lesson that Sakura and I got the other evening in period undergarments. Think the others are right. I think hoop skirt and petticoat, or lots of petticoats. Then the underskirt (visible at the front), then the over skirt. And try to find decent draping materials.
Try the "Tudor Tailor", or failing that any Victorian or older period costume/clothing book out of a library.
For hoops - Garden hose would not be the cheap stuff, it kinks too easy. - Certain irrigation hose will work. - Cane? - Flexible plastic, even cheap stuff, whatever you can find. - Some wire may work.
Just keep an eye out for stuff, and try it out, see what you can get cheap, what works. It would be nice to make it from scratch but depends on how much time you have. |

| The best thing to remember is that with any hoop skirt there needs to be a petticoat! Unless you want the hoops showing through to your skirt in ridges. |
