Cosplay Cup By neimhaille. 06/04/09, 11:40 am |
| Hey all :) Just got back and have had some food so can reply ;)
Yep, there was some big news announced at Wellington :) And just to clarify, it was Bill's idea but we are working out details on how to best make it work :)
I've been in discussions with Bill over phone and in person about ideas for what to do with the cosplay contest here and in Oz. In Wellington and Auckland we have a massive response to the contest and in all three NZ cities for cosplay in general. We really are much more active here than in many other countries, even the guests have been commenting on how many people dress up here, and are both enthusiastic and doing great work. You guys have no idea how we really stack up, don't underestimate what we have here ;)
So thanks to my slight international reputation in the costuming community I managed to get the judging gig in Melbourne and Ange as 2IC is going to help make sure that everything runs smoothly also. Because quite frankly it's a mammoth task and stressful enough when we have a small group!
Having the same judge in both countries means that there is now the possibility of actually having the same grading etc. in doing a trans-Tasman contest to showcase the talent of both countries to each other.
Bill and I are still going to nut out the final details but this year the winner of Melbourne will be flown to Auckland. They will join the winner of the Auckland contest and they will be judged separately (so don't worry, the Aussie will not "win" the Auckland section but will only go up against the Auckland winner).
What happens next year is still to be determined, it partly depends on how successfully this first round works out :)
And no, it won't really be hard to be impartial for the cup as I have family here and in OZ and get tunnel vision when judging anyway ;)

Will groups not be able to participate in this? :3 This is the thing, Bill will be paying for it so it will have to be solo. If you can imagine flights from Melbourne to Auckland return for an adult at short notice plus accommodation.. and then there would be the unpredictability of how many in a group (numbers would have to be limited).
But hey, our Wellington winner won without a group and without a skit. The cup will also be totally separate from the Auckland comp. The details are still being worked out as we don't want to sand bag in any quarter so this is a very complex question! |

So if I entered Auckland comp with another person, they'd still have a chance? Like, the individual can be chosen from a group? I'd hate to kill it for them. >.<
I'm sure you guys are still in the process of working it all out~ But it sounds great so far. I can't wait. C: |

is it fairly recent? Bill has wanted to do something like this for a while now, but it really only got very seriously discussed from last weekend.
We have been hesitant to even have our "Outstanding individual" selected from a group so I do not think we will do this for the Cup. Aside from having the possibility of embarrassing the rest of the group the person is selected from it is also unfair as a group works as a group and enjoys the benefits of extra hands to work on all aspects. There is a reason Henry Ford revolutionised industry: by separating all the parts of manufacturing a product you make it happen faster and easier. It can also be like herding cats working in a group, so you get the cons too;) |

Re: Cosplay Cup By Guest. 07/04/09, 03:01 am |
| I also has a question? I realise you've only just decided this and may not have an answer yet, in which case it's something I'd like you to consider as you do develop the rules.
Are the contestants from this years Wellygeddon and Chchgeddon allowed to enter JUST against the Australian, using this years competition costume? Especially I'm wondering aboout the winners - are they going to be eligible to compete against the Australian?
I ask because if the decision is made to NOT allow those people to re-enter their costumes against the Australians, it will encourage people who have put in the most work and have the best chance of beating said Aussie to skip Chch and Welly and go to Auckland instead. This would make me sad Also, if we are going to say this is a real NZ vs Australia competition, then the best of us should be representing NZ - and the best of us includes this years Chch/Welly winners. |

Re: Cosplay Cup By neimhaille. 07/04/09, 09:09 am |
| I know what you are saying but given the announcement has happened after the contests just run, there are people planning their costumes now for it. On both sides of the ditch. People who have won before as well as not entered before, and they would have an "advantage" so to speak of already seeing some of their competition if you will. It actually would make it less likely for our recent winners to have a fair chance. This way everyone has an equal opportunity to start building for Auckland. Just think it is as hard for people up here to get to Welly and Christchurch to compete as it is for people to get up here.
There is no stopping anyone putting in an entry for this- it's no different really than trying to win in Auckland anyway. You also don't have to enter, it is a fun and exciting thing but not compulsory. I'd like to see everyone try to expand and enhance their skills and there really is enough time for everyone to start.
Next year, well there are changes happening anyway.... probably. |

Re: Cosplay Cup By Static. 08/04/09, 02:44 am |
| I think this is an amazing opportunity, particularly given it's the first of its kind in New Zealand - regardless of the timing and whether people can/will come after the other two cons in the same year. And honestly, if we make sure it's a roaring success, it will happen again, possibly with improvements :) can't wait! Gonna be waaaaaaaay tougher competition now though... |

Re: Cosplay Cup By neimhaille. 08/04/09, 04:39 am |
| :) I'm also trying to work out how to make it fair on both groups and soloists, so don't worry about any groups you may have already planned being broken up :) The main issue is that we can only fly one person over from OZ, but we want to make sure this doesn't affect how the two contests run- seeing as this is an additional element :) |

Re: Cosplay Cup By JVCA. 08/04/09, 09:49 am |
| @neihaille: Unless Bill is adamant on flying the winner over, you could do a live webcam for the aussie contestant? That way you don't have to worry about the group thing. :3 Or, you could fly over a group representative, and have the rest on weblink? |

Re: Cosplay Cup By neimhaille. 08/04/09, 12:47 pm |
| The latter is pretty close to what is probably going to happen :) Will have to chat with the technicians and Bill about it :) If people know sooner rather than later they can choose who will go :)
The prize is the trip you see, so it is making it a little tricky to sort out how to go about it :) But like all prizes we've ever had, there is just the one so maybe I should stress less about it and just let the winners decide how they work it out ;) As per usual! |
