Mortal Instruments and Cassandra Clare
Post By Guest. 06/07/09, 03:55 am

I plowed my way through these books. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare is about a girl called Clary who lives with her mother in New York.... until all hell breaks loose. The City of Bones is about her introduction to the hell breaking loose - a tad too expositional and one sugar honey iced tea-load SNOT of a twist. City of Ashes is about everything going to pot. City of Glass is about the final battle.

Fairly predictable structure, but the characters are brilliant. There are vampires and werewolves and fairies and demons and a flamboyantly gay warlock and secret underground cities with entrances in graveyards and boys with electric blue hair. It's got grown up politics and sixteen-year olds trying to make sense of the world. The main characters are absolutely wonderfully written and occassionally they're mean to each other and they often screw up. Spoiler for end of first book:
Spoiler:

It's a really absolutely delightful series. And it was written by a fanfic writer.

She brought us the absolutely hysterical "Very Secret Diaries" (Lotr) and "The Draco Trilogy" (HP) which I havn't read.

SQUEEE!!!!!!!

Oh, yeah, the "sexy gay demon hunters in New York"(or so they are known at East)books. Admittedly, they're good for the work of a Fanfic writer....although she often edges into the bleak realms of Paolini and Meyer. "Why use one adjective, when I can use Five?"

Angel Sanctuary references abound.

Magnus isn't my favourite character, but he is pretty cool. She's ever so much better than Paolini's first (I didn't bother reading the rest of the Eragon series) and her characters are SO MUCH better than Twilight's characters.

I don't think they're good "for a fanfic writer" - I think they're good OVERALL compared to the usual tripe being released these days.

Not difficult, really.

Personally(and a tad perversely), I kinda like Valentine, just for being such an unrepentant ass. And Book One Jace, also for being an unrepentant(and knowingly pretty)ass.

I like Simon, for being such a nerd.

Also; I read Angel Sanctuary vol. 1-3 the day before I read City of Glass, and I lol'd at the point where Max was reading it. -snrk- So deliciously similar~

Anime and Manga reference abound throught the book, but the Angel Sanctuary ones are probably the most appropriate to the story.

Angel sanctuary references materialize in Book Three, and one wonders if the nine year old boy reading it wouldn't prefer some Bleach.

I'm about halfway through the first book. It's brilliant! Was she really a fanfic writer? Awesome. Could someone link me to the Draco one?
