Just a question
Post By Strieth [Leon]. 19/01/09, 06:28 am

Just a question. I'm a bit of a writer myself and I've been writing a novel that I feel deeply about. Does anybody know where the best place to publish it to get it noticed? Cheers.

By published, I mean 'online', not as an actual book.

Bebo Authors is okay, Fictionpress.net is the way to go though. Just like FanFiction.net but, you know, not FanFiction. =]

Get a DA or LJ (or both, double the hits, of course zero times two is still zero...), be a friend whore and then post chapter by chapter, like once a week so you don't try people's patience. Maybe shorter if the chapters are pretty long. Lots of people will see it that way - can't promise anyone will READ it, but thats always the way. Of course it does require that you be a whore, but most art does at some point :) Check out the nanowrimo site, that's bound to have good links about what to do once you have a novel finished.

The thing is, the Internet is SO big, it's hard getting anything noticed. You could digg or stumble-upon whore it too, but you'd need a bunch of people helping you with that. I wish you luck in your endeavour, but honestly I think getting it "noticed" in the sense that even 0.5% of the internet knows about it is just beyond the capability of one person.

Depending on the genre, you could try the reputable ebook houses - Eternal, Sanhaim, Double Dragon, Ellora's Cave (warning, that one is NOT for the under 18s) - which have a reasonable following, decent covers and marketing budgets - that's if you want to mainstream publish in ebook form. PM me for more info - I make a reasonable amount selling ebooks online - although I do non-fiction.

Otherwise, you in for self publishing, which means either using one of the many self publishing sites or blogs mentioned above, or making your book available as PDF from your own site - either for a cost or for free. It all depends what you want to achieve by 'publishing' your book.

All I want out of it is just people to read and review my book?
I'm not in it for profit.

Booksie

ABC Tales

Or, for an unusual twist, there's Conchord Free Press

Might be the kind of thing you're looking for? With the exception of the last one, these are sorta social networking sites for writers

If you just want to post it online, and then link everyone you know to it, then fictionpress.net is a good bet. I'm not sure what its hit rate is like (probably nothing like fanfiction.net) but it has all the bells and whistles for posting, editing after you realise you've spelt something wrong, getting feedback and networking to find beta's.
If your html is up to it, you could get a freebie site and post it up there. Text takes bugger all room, you could put up some illustrations as well. You can even password it. But harder to distribute.
Or one of the journal sites, you might even get picked up on the front page!

Careful though, coz the internet can be a vicious vicious place. :)
