Cosplay budgets? By sakuramiyabi. 08/12/08, 04:52 am |
| Do you try to budget yourself when you make cosplays? Or do you buy according to need? I think I can make all my cosplays for about $50/cosplay thats excluding money for props and wigs. what about you? |

| I don't budget for anything...I can't o___o I've tried! I try instead to spread my purchases out over a long time; getting the staples first (shoes, accessories, wigs) and then fabric, doing the basics, then embellishing. I pretty much get bits when I can afford it, otherwise me and my wallet get very upset with each other. |

| We should chuck this in general - but I'm not a mod
I try to limit it to ~$100/costume, including shoes/wigs/accessories. But I rarely set a formal budget. I'll skimp on less important things to keep costs down, or reuse, or blatantly steal stuff from Mum - she's a quilter and so long as I want craft-weight cotton and not excessive amounts I'm allowed to raid her 3 cupboard stash. I'm quite happy to sacrifice existing items of clothing for the cause as well, it's usually cheaper than remaking.
But on that note, I have a job and have moved out of home; my budget is MY budget, and not reliant on parentals permission, or pocketmoney or any of the other really restrictive things. |

| -sigh- ... If any of you learnt how my cosplay spending goes, you'd die of horror... Mother and I don't budget for my costumes. We buy as we go. Thankfully, this means lots of leftover fabric, so gradually, my costumes are getting cheaper, thanks to the abundance of red and black in all my outfits. But... Yeah, no budget here. (Trust me, cosplaying stuff like Fai D. Flourite's original outfit wouldn't work on one-- the fabric for the coat alone was enough to make most of you weep) |

| Hrmm~ Well... Yeah, I don't work as of yet & nana buys fabric etc as my christmas/birthday presents. Basically, our philosophy is, if I'm going to do it, I might as well put the extra money in to do it as best as I can. Though as soon as we start totaling it up I'm left to die a little on the inside. NEW LAPTOP, IT COULD'VE BEEN MINE. ;3; |

I watched my savings cut in half v_v Now it's Christmas.. Everyones getting a budget as present this year XD Just get some batteries and write "present not included" on them ohohohoh
I don't really calculate how much I spend either.. I've had to invest in a lot of glue etc recently. I don't like it. But yeah, family members and a creative use of free things comes in handy! |

| I just buy as I go, and what I can affors at the time, don't really set a budget. Each costume can take quite a while to get done so the cost gets spread out, so it doesn't hurt so much lol.
I try not to think about how much each costume has cost in total... |

| A-ha funny... I wish I knew how a budget works, if my wallet was human it'd probably have starved to death by now.
But on average I think I've spent $50 per costume (not including wigs and props) but I've had to spent over $400 on a costume, luckily there was some spared material, not enough for a costume I don't think.... |

| I don't bother trying, coz I know it won't work for me. >.>;
Instead what I do is I grab stuff early if it's on sale, and I note down all my expenses, so when I eventually retire the costume and sell it, I can try recoup the losses. |

Too much effort and memories are attached to my costumes to sell, and I don't think they'd sell either lol. |

Re: Cosplay budgets? By JVCA. 08/12/08, 02:51 pm |
| @Icarus: Hahah, some of mine would be more likely to sell than others. Bianchi and Misa I can't really sell, as they're pretty much my normal clothes/clothing I bought rather than made. Yuna, I think would sell, and I think I will sell her after a few more wears, though I don't actually know how much I spent on her, so I'd probably take a loss, hahah. Flonne would sell too, but given that Flonne was a gift from Val, I don't think I'd want to sell it anyway. <3 Having said that, I don't think I'd sell my costumes in NZ: while we have cosplayers here, let's face it: we're all stingy. <_> I'd rather sell on ebay or coscom and actually have a chance of getting back what I paid for it - I know I spent at least $150 on Yuna, and I don't think anyone here would pay that. >.> Memories are nice, but I have those in photos, and if I'm not going to wear the costume again, someone else may as well do. Having said that, I wouldn't sell a costume until I knew for sure I wouldn't wear it again. |

| Ooooooh T____T I think my cheapest was around $25 and most expensive (and first!) was $100 (since I screwed the dress up and had to make it twice and the fabric was $15 a meter T__T) Since then I have become much more cheap ^^; I try to buy things on sale... but sometimes it doesn't go to well. I guess you always splurge on your hobbies! (And I can compensate in other areas... like eating XD) |

Re: Cosplay budgets? By Guest. 09/12/08, 03:27 am |
| Sometimes mine are tailored to my body, sometimes mine aren't. Like my Alucard Jacket - that'll fit a lot of people but it was my first cosplay and hence to crappy to sell I've lent stuff out - Raillion currently has Sephiroth and he killed the boots, but they were pretty much dead anyway. What really hurts is that a girl I'm not longer speaking to has the Seras Victoria shirt I'm SO proud of, but she paid for the shirt and I just altered it so I can't whinge too much. |
