Au Contraire 2013: Regeneration
Post By aucontraire. 03/03/13, 02:30 pm

Hi 8)
This probably really belongs in Other NZ Events, but I don't have access to post there yet.

Basically, I'm here to let you know about Au Contraire 2013, this year's National Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention (NatCon), and in particular the cosplay-related events.

The main cosplay event is the Masquerade on the Saturday night, which gives you the opportunity to show off your costuming and/or performance skills on stage. We've got a grand prize of $500 in book vouchers for the winning entry this year, and another $300 worth of runnerup prizes. Casual cosplay is also welcome throughout the weekend; there'll be spot prizes for the best dressed. And we're looking at running other cosplay-related events; suggestions welcome!

NatCons are non-profit events run by fans for fans, with any proceeds donated to charity (the primary charity for this year is the Wellington Women's Refuge). They've been running for more than 30 years, with a different team taking on the organisation each time, and cosplay has been an important aspect since the beginning (albeit not originally under that name!) They're very different from Armageddon; we're expecting a couple of hundred members this year, but most of them will be sticking around for the whole weekend rather than just spending an hour or two shopping. It's most fun if you stay at the hotel for the duration, even if you live in Wellington; events can run late into the night, especially the filking!

I have been known to make the odd costume myself, but seldom find the time; I'm prone to taking on too many different projects 8)

If you've got any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Oh, sorry, it's 12-14 July at the Quality Hotel, Cuba St, Wellington. All the detail is on the website, but I had to take the link out of my post since I'm a new user. Googling "au contraire 2013" should get you there!

ETA oh, and I see my .sig is showing up now 8)

Off topic. Wow, aucontraire, a three ring swept hilt rapier with a forward swept quillion. Nice.

Thanks 8) I'm afraid I don't know that much about swords, but I put quite a bit of work into modelling it, so I'm glad it looks authentic enough to describe!

I've created a thread for the con in Other NZ Events now.

Mine (real metal historical fencing simulator) is very similar to that. The piece of the blade froward of the quillions (cross-guards)/handle should probably be gray metal. But no detailing like you did on the rest of blade, just plain grey. Because it is blunt, you stick one or two fingers in there, hence why the rings are so far forward.

Just letting everyone know the con timetable is up now; I'm not sure how many people visit the Other Events section 8)
