Fake blood help?
Post By Toshiya. 29/04/13, 02:41 pm

Sorry if this has probably been asked before and probably and obvious question, but it was something I was a bit unsure of and better safe than sorry right?

Majority of my cosplays for Wellygeddon this year require the use of fake blood. I've never really had the need in the past to use it and I was wonder what's the best kind to use.

I was wondering:
- How good are the cheap fake blood tubes you can buy at a regular $2 shop - worth it in terms of quality or am I better off just mixing up my own mixture in the kitchen?
In terms of staining, I'm not fussy on the clothes staining because I can reuse it for other cosplays, however I was wondering how well does it do on skin?:
- In terms of removal, does it come straight off after a good wash or will I still get a bit of stain that will last me a few days (cause as funny as it probably will be, not quite keen on walking into a Tuesday 8AM lecture with blood stains still on my face xD)
Also any other advice to do with fake blood for a noob would be wonderful :)

Sorry again if it's pretty obvious. Haven't had much experience with face paint or face products since I've had sensitive skin growing up.

This is my method on making fake blood : ) tutorial

I like to make my own fake blood, because then you can control a lot of the texture, how it runs on your skin and the colouring. It also looks 100x more real than the $2 shop tubes.

as for how well it washes out. This is my Keiichi cosplay and I had blood all over me, however one quick run through the washing machine and that shirt came out fine, if not stained a little bit in places, and the way I make it doesn't stain my skin at all <: just comes off with one quick hop into the shower~

Thank You! It really looks amazing. I was looking at recipes online after I posted and by far this one is my favourite!

Also colour syrup = corn syrup? Just to make sure cause I haven't heard of colour syrup before.

Probably will say thanks on behalf of my friends too. They're considering doing a Higurashi group cosplay at Wellygeddon and they're pretty convinced on just buying $2 fake blood. They haven't seen it yet but I'm sure they will really appreciate it :)

Oh sorry, that was a really bad spelling mistake on my part! That was meant to be chocolate syrup haha. so any kind of melted chocolate you use to top icecreams with~ just another things to add a bit of dark colour/texture

Glad it can help!

Just a word of caution - you might not care about how it stains your clothes, but you have to think about the other attendees/cosplayers? If you want fake blood and don't mind it staining, maybe do it a few days/weeks prior to the con so it has plenty of time to dry, and won't rub off on anyone's else's clothes/cosplay.

I used BodyFX this time, and the stuff they uses a) Doesn't really dry and is not really fast. Not a big problem, however for ages after it is wet, and even ages after that it can rub off. b)It does leave a residual stain on clothes. Not so on skin. c) It soaks into the clothes, hence became a wider blot over time. It did however give a rather fresh stain through my clothing, which was what I wanted.

However having dealt with making fake blood and wounds a little bit as a kid I would say you can get a much nicer dried blood effect that way. Or even a fresh blood, but dryer to touch, effect. Or it's easy enough to make actual raised or shallow wounds. The hard part is making sure they stay on all day, as they will be less flexible than the skin. Also itching, etc.
