Hahaha, yeah until my face paint started to melt, but otherwise a very cool effect lol |

| Michaels done it! He finally finished paper mache-ing Rem's thigh and calf cuffs on Tuesday!!!
- Spoiler:
Michael pulling a derp face as he finishes up the last cuff... for now >:)
I've been paper mache-ing my butt off with Gaara's gourd and finally got sick of it so decided to make some sand shuriken. I did two different prototypes. Both start off as a shuriken cut out of a light card then two I did two different things from there:
- Spoiler:
The one on the left has very thin triangle cut outs taped from the points of the shuriken to the middle. Then I wrapped the whole thing in paper tape until it looked like that ^. The one on the right has hot glue placed strategically along the paper shuriken to sort of look like the paper tape one. Close up of the hot glue. Both only have one layer of PVA glue topped with sand on them. The paper tape shuriken would probably be a fantastic idea if I wanted to create regular shuriken, but for Gaara's sand shuriken it just won't do. The hot glue shuriken on the other hand is beyond awesome in my opinion. It really looks like Gaara just whipped it up out of his sand and looks great! The hot glue shuriken is a tad on the heavy side, and I'm sure that if you threw it at somebody it would hurt very much. If you see me at Hammygeddon, ask for a hold, lol.

| @Slinky - Thank you! I hope he turns out good. Theoretically, he'll be awesome. Realistically, I need to get my a into g so I can finish him on time. Not all of us have made sewing skills like Pi and can whip amazing things up in a coule of days lol. Yeah! Chonny said you guys had inflatable banana's or somethng in them, I thought that was super resourceful and would have been much lighter than stuffing them. My tails are mega heavy atm, lol, considering what they are made out of though, it makes sense. I won't post pictures of how they are made until after Hammy, I want there to be a bit of magic in how they move lol. It's a basic and unoriginal design, but I haven't seen it used on any cosplay tails as of yet. It'll be awesome to share the secret of moving tails for everybody else after this, see how other people can improve on them lol.
PROGRESS!!!!
Only a little bit for now, because I've been rage quitting when it came to papermaching Gaara's gourd. Now I'm rage quitting on painting it. I hate papermache now, and I'm going to force Michael into papermaching the rest of Rem's armor. If he want's his precious Ryuk, he'll be my papermache slave. Hmmph.
So here is the now painted and finished sand shuriken. I'll probably make one more.
- Spoiler:
one side the other side I like how this came out, but compared the more goldeny colour of the gourd, I'll prbabaly have to repaint this and put more gold tones into it after I've finished the gourd.
Speaking of the gourd, it's all finished in reguards to it's constuction, I'm just painting it now. I've noticed that with a lot of other people's gourds who have cosplayed Gaara that they leave the gourd smooth after papermaching it. I'm fairlyu certain that the gourd is made out of Gaara's special chakra infused sand, so I wanted to make it look like that. After paper amching it, I cover the gourd with a slightly watered down PVA glue and took some sand and coated the gourd with the sand. It's texture is amazing now, and whilst I'm painting it I'm getting really excited to how it looks. I'm only painting the base coat first before I start adding further detail into the sand colours. Befroe I began painting over the sand, I first covered it with a couple layers of matte varnish spray. Once the paint is on the gourd, none of the sand particles move, so I don't have to worry about leaving a little sandy trail at Hammygeddon lol. Here's a pic of me rage quitting painting this poo bum of a gourd: implied swear word ahead!!!
- Spoiler:
The colour isn't this light, the paint is just wet at that point of time. It looks more like the golden edges around the light stuff where the pant has already dried

| SO, for Gaara's gourd, I really wasn't in the mood for finding/making a cork for the top of the gourd, I just really wasn't. So instead, I though I would make a sand hand that was coming out the top of the gourd, like he was about to attack someone with a sand hand, lol. Any excuse to not make/find a cork.
I don't have any photo's of the first process cause I'm an idiot, but I made the hand shape out of thickish wire and then covered it in paper tape. The paper tape was so that the hotglue had something to sit on and stick too. I used the same method from here as I did on the sand shuriken. It's got long metal prongs on the end to stab intot the top of the gourd opening.
- Spoiler:
So it came out looking uber creepy and I really love it and can't wait to give it it's coat of sand and paint!!
OH! And it turns out, it's illegal to take sand form the beach. I found this out when I came home with a bucket of Mount Maunganui's finest beach sand and dad (a cop) asked me where i got it from then told me I had broken the law lol. So from now on I'm buying my sand, and you kiddies should do to!! (either that or take it from the beach in the dark of the night with ski masks on... seriously, don't do that)
And the hand makes a great hat if you get bored!!!

| @brunetteyes - Thank you! I've already begun thinking up many other things that I can stick in top of the gourd instead of a cork. Like half a sand dome sheild, or and explosion of sand, the posibilities are endless!!! Yeah, it's completely coated in hot glue. My friends hotglue gun has never been used so much in it's poor little life!! I used three boxes of small glue sticks that had about 25-30 sticks of hot glue in each box. So thats 75-90 small hot glue sticks lmfao. But once It's painted it gives a really awesome look of sand hardened with chakra. |

| Dang that hand thing looks awesome! Or you could use wallpaper paste granules (for a sand look). You put glue on the thing, and then sprinkle the grains on, and then put a little bit of glue on top to hold it on! Don't get them too wet or the grains will turn into glue, but it has a really awesome effect. If you want a pic I'm sure I can dig out my old art portfolios that had it on, lol. Or just make an example thing, I still have granules left over that I took from my school, lol 8D;
(suggesting this because I've always wanted to do this for a cosplay prop |D ) |

| @Pura - Thanks!! Now, I did actually think of using wallpaper granules. Dad wallpapered our whole house, so when U said I was going to go get sand for the gourd and all sand accesories, he dug into his work cupboard nd pulled them out. They are very cool, but the sizing of the granules was inconsistent, and they weren't as small as sand was, and I figured the best way to make something look sandy was by using sand, lol. But I would really like to see how you utilized these glue granules, so yes please! hunt that boy out!! You've always wanted to make a gourd, sand hand, or just use the granules for a prop?? |

| Re: [skratch's sketchbook] Why Do I Keep Dreaming Bigger!? By chiken_skratch. 25/03/13, 08:06 am |
| It feels like I've made a tonne of progress, but the sad reality states otherwise.
That god damned gourd finally has it's undercoat completely painted on:
- Spoiler:
I am currently painting in the lowlights and highlights. After that is those black seal markings then it's done!!!!
I made the top of the gourd so that it could be interchangeable. This way I can cosplay Gaara for the rest of my life, and just add somethign new to the top of the gourd to keep ole Gaara fresh and exciting!! So, I've covered most of the hand in it's first layer of sand, save the base and the outer two fingers. It'll need another coat to go over all the missed spots:
- Spoiler:
So that the hand stays there and doesn't fall off (the two wires are mainly for lining the correct part of the gourd up with the hand, then actually keeping the hand there) I'll attach a little bit of velcro in the opening of the gourd and another bit on the base of the hand.
And lastly, I got dad to cut out my geta for more using his big buzz saw, because there was no way on god's green earth that I was getting anywhere near that death trap waiting to happen. Never used to be afraid of the big machienes until I sanded the tips of my fingers off and also cut the tip of my middle finger off when using a automatic slicer in a service deli. Needless to say, I'm not too fond of the big machienes anymore, lmao.
- Spoiler:
I originally made the teeth of the geta 5 inches tall, then realised that was very impractical, so shortened them down to just under 3. They are still big in my dad's opinion, but I think they are just tall enough to get me over PI's height, lmfao. |

| @sakkaf - Thank you! It doesn't feel like it though, as I've only been making props, haven't touched the sewing side of things. The gourd witht he hand weighs 2.1kg. I suspect that 2/3 of that weight is in the hand, lol. So it hardly weighs anythign when it's on your back. you just have to be mindful of not whacking it into things.
@PIe - Thanks! Painting that gourd has been the death of me, but I'm nearly done!! |

| Re: [skratch's sketchbook] Why Do I Keep Dreaming Bigger!? By chiken_skratch. 03/04/13, 09:40 am |
| No major updates atm, just little things.
I've been adding lowlights and highlights to my gourd, but the first time I did it the lowlights were too dark and the highlights too white, lol.
- Spoiler:
I've now gotten the mother of a thing to the way I want it to look, and added in the pale yellow seals by painting them on... But I don't like how they turned out, they look a bit too cartoonish for me:
- Spoiler:
^This is without the black outline, and I didn't really like the way it looked here, but thought the balc would tie it together... ^I was wrong. It just looks cartoonish and takes away all the detail I've put into the sand to make it look realistic. I'm going to try adding some tissue paper overtop, make it look like a paper seal thats attached to the gourd, instead of a seal that's apart of the gourd. I hope it works out!!!
I got my Soushi wigs the other day, Yay!!! They are a nice light grey and turn a bit whiter in the light. I bought two wigs because I was buying the wigs from China and didn't know of the quality (they were only NZ$13 each so I couldn't be sure) so I bought two so if they turned out to be not very thick, I could make them thicker. But they are quite thick (not the thickest wigs I've seen, but definately not thin). But seeing as Soushi is a Fox Legacy (or somethign like that) I decided to take the wefts out of one and stick them in the other anyway, to give him some nice thick hair that will be easier to style and work with.
- Spoiler:
As you can see, the wigs have a centre flesh parting to them. I didn't know this when I bought them, and unfortunately that type of parting is useless to me for Soushi. So I trolled the web for a bit seein g if there were any tutuorials for removing flesh partings and making your own parting to put in... but I didn't find any that were relevant to what I needed. So I used my brain and in the way that I'm known for, and I think I found a solution. I'll practise on the top of the wig I've half pulled apart first then If I get the technique right, move on to the proper one. Cosplay Gods, please be kind to me and allow my theories to come to fruitition!!!
And lastly, I went on a hunt today to all the stores that I know of in Tauranga that sell fabric for the black under kimono that Soushi wears.
I wanted the black material to be satiny, but I also wanted it to have some decorative pattern on it, to help make it a little bit more flashy because Soushi's outfit is rather plain in it's black and white. I also don't want the main white kimono to be made of satin, unless I find a very beautiful unlustered-satin material. I got it down to two choices, both from spotlight (please excuse the poor photo quality:
- Spoiler:
^This one is very beautiful. It's got red chrysanthemums on it with pale green leaves and then vines spread out froim the coloured designs in a black thread. You can't really see these vines unless they are present in the light. ^And then this one is just as gorgeous. It has red and black blossoms stretchign out along the fabric, but when the light is upon the blossoms, they go a bit goldeny (not as much as in this picture though, just a hint, lol) So I'm not currently sure which one I'll chose, probably the red and black blossoms though, because then I can mirror those patterns on the teeth of my geta... maybe. What one do you think I should pick??? |

| This update is pure Gaara, YAY!!!! But on a side note, went into spotlight the other day to buy material for Soushi's pants and discovered a new fluffy material where the fluff is longer and its only $50pm!!! YAY ME!!!! And I bought my blue and yellow contacts so am waiting for those.
So, the Gaara that I did for last years Auckgeddon had many... flaws. Ok, it was aweful. I'll start with the vest. The old one was made the morning of the monday and was made out of an aweful material and it just down right makes me wanna gag. Take a little look for yourself:
- Spoiler:
it pulls weirdly on the chest with boobs This is how it looked when worn properly Absolutely aweful lol. But I just finished making my new vest!!! The zip on my new vest is fully functional, and the buckles work as well!!! Nothing about it is staged, and I couldn't believe that everythign came out awesome!!!
- Spoiler:
^all the seperate pieces before I sewed them together showing off my fully operational zip!! ^again, doesn't quite sit right with boobs lol ^neon underwear anybody, lmao ^apologies for the blur factor, and I didnt take a photo of the back lol. SO PRETTY!!!
And the coat, Gaara's coat, well, I'll show you now everythign that is currently wrong with it, lol.
- Spoiler:
^this is the coat in it's entirety, doesn't look all that bad from a distance. But let's take a closer look. ^for starters, the top of his coat is all wonky where the collar sits. One side is higher than the other. ^the inside of the collar is... poorly done. ^then we have the fact that for some stupid reason I sewed an invisable zip in, and how deliciously wonky that stitching is. ^i came to realise pretty quick why invisable zips didn't beling in the middle of coats. My sister and I spent the morning of geddon melting the zip with a lighter at the bottom so it wouldn't come open. A few of my fingertips were burnt in the process lol. ^if you saw me as Gaara, when I turned my back you would have seen the back of the coat sitting weirdly near my butt like this. hope that's an easy fix lol. and finally, something to mke even the hardened cosplayers scream, the inside of the coat!!!! ^dun dun dun!!!! the ammount of the material I bough not only wasn't long enough, but wasn't wide enough. I made do though, lmfao. Not to mention there wasn't any type of overlocking and the freytasticness of this coat if out of this world OTL I'm currently fixing it up so don't have any photos of it yet. The cosplay gods only know if it will turn out alright and be an easy fix, lol.
On a lighter note, I stuck a piece of tissue paper over the top of the yellow seal and am more than happy with the results!!
- Spoiler:
compare the top yellow colour with the bottom yellow colour and notice how less cartoony it looks lol.
And I'm growing my hair out so I can style it perfectly for Gaara. I currently look like a ginger Beiber though, so can not wait to cut my hair lol. I was playing with it the other day, using hairspray and the GHD's and it turned out like this:
- Spoiler:
The flicks are quite cool, especially the one is the back. The ones on the top are a bit too long, but when I cut my hair everything should turn out fine.
Speaking of hair, I got out of the shower the other day and noticed my hair looked like a certain character, can you guess who??

| No picture worthy progress atm. I've been coating and coating Rem's thigh and calf cuffs using PVA glue. There is three layers on them now, they will probably need one or two more. Then Michael will be painting their white base coats. Due to Michael and I have quite the significant height difference, I've put a layby down on some five inch heels. This black pair here http://www.hannahs.co.nz/product/Maiden/?i=82846 Not 100% sure on whether or not I'll have to take the studs off yet so I can fix Rem's bonal claw feet on top. I imagine that making the feet is either going to be a lot of fun or involve a lot of swear words. I would have gotten a 6inch pair, but I'm going to be in them all day and want to be as comfortable as possible. And just in case anybody forgot that Michael is just over 6feet, here how big our height difference is

| I have been working my butt off making chicken wire bases for Rem's shoulder blade things and her hip things.
- Spoiler:
I was a Richard and didn't take any photos of the shoulder spikes in chicken wire, sorry. But this is the base of the shoulder piece. This is what will eventually sit on my shoulder with the wonderful aid of Velcro!!
I thought I would show a detailed process of how I did the hip things, which turn out to look a lot like metal underwear, LOL.
- Spoiler:
^First I cut out a sheet of chicken wire. ^Then I cut out a generic shape that would fit me coincidently like a pair of underwear. I kept holding it up to my body and cutting away bits of wire until I had the desired shape for Rem that I wanted. ^Because I was holding a lot of pointy ended chicken wire up against my body, I bent the edges back so I could avoid cutting and scratching my skin up. ^But alas, there would always be one little stray sticky out bit that would get me. ^Once done, my cut and bent edged underwear looked like this. But it's a bit hard to wear flat underwear. ^So I bent and molded the underwear until it fit nicely against my body and this is what it looks like not on me. ^And this is what they look on my body, back hip thing included. Hope you like the butt-shot. The green wool is just there so they can sit on my body without me holding them. Once fully done they will be attached to my person with the wonders of the almighty VELCRO!!! All armour pieces will be attached to me with Velcro because I want to be able to drive/sit at some point and want to be able to easily take off the necessary bits to be able to do either. Oh, and go to the toilet. That's gunna be hard enough as is, might as well try and make that as easy as I can, lmao... *mentally crying at how hard doing ANYTHING is going to be that day* ^And this is both shoulder pieces and hips pieces covered in expanding foam. HUZZAH! Now I just need to carve the foam, tape them up in paper tape, paper mache them, coat them with PVA glue, base coat paint them, then detail paint them. Easy.... *cries*
Going up to Auckland next weekend so Michael can do all the paper mache, MWAHAHAHAHA!!! SUFFER MICHAEL!!!! He'll also be coating them with PVA glue if we have the time in the two days. Other wise, he'll be painting the white base coats for the thigh and calf cuffs. I'll be teaching Michael how to make a little skull and other Ryuk accessories out of polymorph friendly plastic and once he knows what he's doing he'll be all over those. Jesus, that's one full weekend Michael, how will yuou ever survive??? MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
On a side note, like 40% of the way through Kiba, new hair cut and all. Just need to die my hair, find appropriate pants, either buy of make the ninja sandals, and then WALA!! Kiba!! Oh, and contacts and extended canines. 40%

| Haha, a tad late lol. Yeah I did!! They came out really well!! You can see them moving in our skip via this handy dandy youtube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNJXz73zV8c Hold on, I've deleted all my old photos of how to make the tails, and have to go babysit for the next six hours, but when I get home I'll dig out my tails, and the ones that are still half made, and I'll show you how I did it. *writes a little memo so I won't forget* |
