Hello!
Obviously I am new... uhhh and I don't really know what to say.

*awkward silence*

I live in Auckland and have been cosplaying since about 2008 but have never really thought to join a cosplay forum until now, I don't know why! I love Anime but have not watched nearly as much as I want to so please give me suggestions of great ones so I can get onto it :)

I really want to start making more detailed cosplays as the ones I have done in the past have been rather simple. I look forward to chatting with you all and getting ideas and tips Very Happy

Snow

I am not up to date with the lingo of the different types of anime but I generally like anything. I like the over dramatised, pretty, sparkly animes to the more grim intense story lines. Mecha is good also. Love stories, crime, uhh yea... That probably doesn't narrow it down >.>

So does the sparkly dramatic anime have to make any sense?
And if you like Mecha then you don't mind fighting anime?

Hi there! Welcome Very Happy. I love mecha too, so have you seen Code Geass or Eureka Seven? There was another Mecha I love but I can't remember it right now, hahaha ...

Recentish series that I've seen that have been really good include Mawaru Penguindrun, AnoHana, Psycho-Pass, Sword Art Online (okay, haven't seen this one, but I hear it's really good, along with Attack on Titans).

I haven't watched much anime recently cause I'm so busy, so some of the most recent stuff I haven't watched yet, haha

Well I do prefer a storyline I can follow without wondering what the heck is going on! So yes some sense is good. I don't mind fighting at all with storyline.

I haven't seen either of those so thanks for the suggestion! Man I feel like I have been out of the loop far too long because I haven't heard of any of those ahahaha... well at least I have a lot to get me started with. Thanks! :)

Code Geass and Eureka Seven are good because it's mecha, but not an anime based on the fact that they are mecha, so they both have very good, serious story lines, which is what I like most with anime, haha Razz. Most school based stuff I don't like because it has no real serious storyline, lol. But I have seen some very good school-based anime series, Another is one of them, it's set at a school, but is about a curse, so there's lots of death and stuff, haha.

So what anime have you watched?

Would Code Geass count as a grim intense storyline? (>..> Has actually not got around to watching it yet.) Eureka seven may have some grimmer stuff, but on the whole is I think a lighter more fun series. Air gear might be similar enough. It is a bit more heavy, but still fun at the same time.

Other funer Mecha anime? Um, ..., struggling a bit here. Zoids. Full Metal Panic. The mecha sections are a bit more intense, being like a military operation. Then it goes back to slapstick high school comedy the next episode.

So not Excel Saga or Azumugha Diaoh, although they do actually have a storyline, or so they claim. Not Baccano of Elfen Liad being major bloodbaths. Although many people find Elfen Liad is very easy to watch for the amount of blood.

On a different tack, it's a really long series, (still going), One Piece. You will quickly find you either love it, or you don't. Luffy says he's gonna be king of the pirates. And he's a rubber-boy. And I have never seen him actually pirate anything yet. Sanji is a fighting chef, who doesn't want to damage his hands so he only uses kicks. etc. Funny, action, but loved or hated. I hear some people like Bleach, Naruto or Inuyasha. They would all keep you going for years.

But for pure fun it is hard to beat high school martial arts series. There are the slapstick drama comedies, harem comedies, digital monsters, fighting quests, theives, magical series, kick ass special agencies, non-stop police action series, space series, Studio Ghibli style childs stuff, little devil stuff, monster killing, fantastical/steampunk, samurai, robot companions, even series on the Otaku lifestyle, alternate worlds, alien/robot landed on earth, and many more out there. Most of which is pretty good, some is excellent.

I have watched Elfen Lied, I really enjoyed it with its cutesy/gory mixture. One day when the perfect pink wig comes my way I may have to put a little something together for Lucy.

I find long series VERY hard to start watching just because I know it will take me forever to finish (if ever), I started watching One Piece when it was on cartoon network I think? I enjoyed what I saw but then I just never continued to watch... maybe cause Sky got the cut haha.

Also started watching Blench but soon gave up. Again so long and I don't have the time to commit! Maybe one day....

I really enjoyed Read or Die and I wish there was another series and can't beat a good old school based anime. Most of the other stuff I'v watched would be all the popular older shows. Evangelion, Deathnote, Ouran Host Club, Ghost in the Shell, Fullmetal Alcamist, Soul Eater... The list goes on. I need to get up to date with this stuff guys! Ahh

There is only one ROD anime. But there is two different ROD manga, Read or Dream and Read or Die, one set in the UK and one in Asia.

Yeah one piece is the only long series I think is worth watching because I love it. The way it flows is improbably easy to just keep watching. Opinions vary. Otherwise I don't have the time and I don't think they offer much anyway. At least compared to some of the interesting/deep shorter series.

I mostly seem to have older series myself.

The Cat returns is great fantastical Disney crossed with Alice type stuff. Girl who leapt through time is cute school girl crossed with time travel stuff. Very clever movie. The place promised in our early days is a sweet feelgood but melancholy movie. Voices of a Distant Star is a short movie made buy just one man. Won awards. Bitter sweet love story based on space travel. Tokyo Godfathers is a great feelgood movie about homeless people and an abandoned kid. Haibane Renmei is a very sweat if sometimes dark series. Nice visuals Solty Rei is more flash, but a similar mesh of sweet/fun moments, interesting characters and some dark ones. My-Hime is a bit more grown up school/magical girls series with a plot. Love Hina is a (harem) slapstick comedy/romance set in a dorm rather than school. Negima and Maraburaho are magic school (harem) slapstick comedy. Please Twins also a school/harem comedy. School based martial arts include school rumble, Tenjho Tenge. Madlax, Noir, Gunsmith Cats, You're Under Arrest are gun toteing action series with two women. Or L/R with two guys. Burst Angel with a group of women and mecha. Steamboy is a great steam action movie. Kyo Kara Maoh is a boy who is dragged into an alternate universe and told he is the the demon king. A long series of quests(/comedy) ensue. This Ugly Yet Beautiful World is about a boarding house with strange enough guests till an alien shows up. Then a robot. Sacred Princess is a group of people on a quest wandering through nations. Good. Ah my Goddess if you like hopeless romance. Porco Rosso is a nice feature about a flying pig and a girl and sky pirates, etc.

Now if you wanted dark, interesting, serious series then I could suggest a few.

I didn't realise there were two mangas, when boarders had a sale I picked up a few read or die books but they are random ones.

Didn't they play a few of those at Geddon over the years? I always miss the screenings I forget they are on whoops!

Well you sure have supplied me with a list that will probably keep my going until I die Very Happy so thank you! Now to find the time to fit them all in... hmm thats going to be a challenge me thinks.

I still haven't watched it yet. But it sounds like there is a still unfinished Read or Die light novel series, Read or Die Manga, Read or Dream manga, and sometime will be a R.O.D. Rehabilitation manga. Then there is the anime ROD OVA and ROD the TV series which are both based on Read or Dream characters. And apparently the novels, manga and anime have different stories in them.

Yeah I think some of those have played before.

And it's hard to know what people like, so give them choice. I have managed to watch over half my collected DVD's in about 3-4 years.

I have run out of room in my room for any more book cases, so I have a started taking over the study and lounge. I did however have a cleanout of books, and now have 4 spare shelves. I can watch a series pretty fast if I have nothing else to do. But with a busy life .... After all I will have to make more cosplays sometime.

It's pretty slow-paced, but a beautiful series. Definitely recommended.

Some others I'd recommend are Princess Tutu, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Vision of Escaflowne (the series not the movie).
