| In short ! .... Tengen Toppa Garren Lagann is one good anime... though the sad twist makes me sad and i nearly gave up on the series ..due to this twist...but i solidered on to the end ... where i found myself disappointed at the ending...
- Spoiler:
Nia disappears after she gets married to Simon.... thats soo sad... but the real disappointment was finding out that nothing really changed in the city after 20 years.. -Yoko is teacher -R-guy with the random piece of hair and cant read (also from that village that sends out people once they have a population of 50) becomes president -The two kids still in the Defence force thing -That scary science guy with the green hair ..hasnt aged and he was the oldest out of everyone -Simon didnt don anything epic with the rest of his life..just went back to drilling :/ <-- was a buzz kill for me
WE are the TENGEN TOPPA GARREN LAGANN! |

| the ending made me shed one of my many man tears Ive had over the course of my life, aside from the digimon movie Omnimon scene,
- Spoiler:
But the ending was like this because Simon had sucessfully pretty much beaten god and the universe was now gonna have happy times forever, also I guess when Simon made his statement about not bringing back the lost comrades was why he gave gimmy the core drill since he didnt want to be getting in the way of the younger generations growth as they would idolize and depened on him for all their problem

| ^ yeah i know...but it was just sad is all ... i think the only time i shed a man tear during Garren Lagann ..was when- Spoiler:
everyone gets trapped in their own lil world of happiness and they all have to overcome it to come back to reality... i was crying of happiness ofcourse though Viral and his wife and child (even though beastmen cant have children <-- but i guess thats what makes it his happy dream )

Re: Gurren Lagann Thread? By Lowkey. 27/04/11, 01:17 pm |
| I'm a fan of complex characterization, melodramatic but believable intra-personal relationships and dramatic action... handled with gleeful, capricious lack of concern about more western character concepts. Will this series provide any of these or just a hedonistic rush of pleasure & almost sexual catharsis that comes from watching mechas and buxom women?
I've recently realized that... the "popular" ... pop-fiction tropes of films like the Fast & the Furious and the heightened, unselfconscious drama and emotional force of Eastern media really appeal to me on an enjoyment level: hot women, beautiful machines. Veilside RX-7 in Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift, White Glint in Armoured Core: For Answer. Unashamedly simplistic but effective emotional triggers and stories (although For Answer is far from simple).
Will Gurren Lagann appeal to me on this level, or on a more high-brow, concept-driven, literary fiction level that engages more of my intellect and less of my baser interests?
Please answer, I need to know this okay. |

| For me, the essence of a fiction is its metaphysical crossing over of the thought-process barrier. Will the belief of the mecha-world be trule awakening point at which the lever of our consciousness had been pushed over the tipping point?
When you think about the name, Gurren Lagann, it is about the burst of breakthrough over upper limit of the sky. But as we all know that the sky itself is merely a conceptual false limitation as we never reach to the point of threshold for the breaking through, where does that leave us?
The universe, the limitation that we have to break through. Is it infinite or is it finite? In the grand scale of things does it even matter? With a central idea of breaking past the barrier, would it matter more in the canon verse than it is to ours?
Also loving the name "Genome". It's the one that rules the over all yet in the other sense it completely fused and seeped into the being sense of us, which mirrored against the grand and the meager, the macro and micro of all being. Were they well calibrated, or is it just a mere illusion on how we hope we'd be perceived and become?
...
lol >_< |

Re: Gurren Lagann Thread? By noodles. 27/04/11, 01:43 pm |
| The characterization in Gurren Lagann is well-done towards the start of the series, but seems largely left to the dust after a time-skip about mid-way through the series, which let it slip for me as a few characters had only turned up once or twice previously became more important, and I was left with no idea who they were. This may be because I was watching it one episode a week, but surely if these characters had been fleshed out better, one would find it easier to remember them. Don't get me wrong - the main characters are well fleshed out and memorable to boot, but the treatment of a great deal of side characters let me down in this aspect.
While the dramatic plot is indeed entertaining and compelling, but during the "hot-blooded" mecha scenes everything is often overshadowed with yelling catchphrases repetitively. While these catchphrases are uplifting in nature and indeed entertaining, I believe had they not been so over-used, they may have had more meaning towards the end of the series, which seems to throw away much in order to shout about believing in themselves. Expected of a series such as this, really, but as it has such a compelling plot I think I was expecting a little less of this abrasive behaviour, most notable of shonen titles.
Overall, while the plot and characters are indeed compelling, it is still a shonen/mecha title at heart. The mecha design is unique to the show, but a lot of the underlying themes are most definitely not. If you enjoy similar shonen titles such as Naruto, etcetera, then you will enjoy Gurren Lagann. While these shows do indeed have compelling plots, they are still shows aimed primarily at young men, and as such yelling and fanservice often cull from any deeper literary meaning it could have had.
Also, Kamina was hot lol. |

| Big words Hurt tired brain, if your looking for complex characters , TTGL ,in the later episodes, may interest you, the rest mabye not. The rest of your comment I didnt really get partially because
1. My dictionary is that of a smarter than average teenage boy 2. You have to watch it to find out for yourself,
I can only voice my opinion which is all YES this show is one of the best things on the earth, but its not really an anime like NGE it seems to be anime between Gainax's FLCL and NGE being the more sensible yet serious of the 3
and if this thread has done anything to your impulse to watch the show, don't be concerned by our Fangasam of a conversation, were just your average fans reminising on our good memorys of the show
but as Lil-craka has said just watch it

hmmm i wouldnt go as far as to say Tengen Toppa Garren Lagann is the best anime in the world but it is quite good standing apart from all the common anime we see today.. i personally found the characters likable, the artstyle refreshing and the music entertaining .. story was good and i must say they defo know how to throw twists in ...
But if anything TTGL is a must watch , you wont regret it (well atleast i hope not XD) |
