Makeup? (WARNING: contains copious cosplay newb)
Post By Zari. 07/11/09, 07:30 pm

Okay, so I'm new to cosplay and frankly have no idea what I'm doing with regards to makeup. Without it photos turn out terrible, and with it I need to enlist help from my esteemed Mother-loaf, who is beginning to lose patience with me. A 14-year-old girl apparently needs to know about make-up. D: I'm a recovering tomboy, okay?

The tools I have at my disposal are the following: Mascara, Eyeliner (Cream, Brown, Green), miscellaneous lipglosses, and one SPF15 moisturiser. I normally wear the brown or green eyeliners and the moisturiser + lipgloss but am clueless about everything else.

What is TMMOCC anyway?

Here's some tips followed by the make up you have.

Moisturiser always comes first before putting on any other things. Because your skin absorbes everything that touches it. You wouldn't want to put some nasty chemicals of make up straight on your face without putting a thin layer of protection on it.

Eye liner should be placed before the mascara, when you apply. Do not pull your eye lids, it may be easy. But this can cause pre-mature wrinkles around your eyes. Apply close to the lash line as possible.
You make choose to line the bottom lids of your eye, there are two ways which you can do this. You can either line the skin of it, or you can line the water mark of your eye. As you are a beginner, just simply line the skin of your eye.
Try not to get the eye liner to meet at the tear duck, unless if you want to create the illusion of having your eyes look smaller.

Mascara, here's a great tip. Use a business card to pull up the top lid of your eye lashes. (And so your eye lashes' back will be facing the card) And apply, as you do, the mascara will be able to capture every lash.

As you finish, apply lipgloss. Its better to apply lipstick, and lipgloss over it, to give it that shine.

Thanks for the help. It's been extremely informative. Thankfully it's exam time so my brain absorbs any and all information that gets thrown at it, even the irrelevant stuff. OTL.

It's not really a lipgloss, more like a lipstick in a tube with an applicator thinger...or something.

My advice:

- Invest in a make-up book for beginners, I've been reading mine since I was 8... >.> (Yes, I was a very bored and lonely child)

- Sort out which foundation works best for you. I use powder because my skin can get rather oily, but some people prefer cream or liquid foundation (a really popular type is the liquid-to-powder sort).

- Always, ALWAYS wash off your eye make up before sleeping. Not only does it look terrible in the morning, you can lose quite a few eyelashes. (bad experience...I know better now ^.^)

- Lauren Luke has some amazing tutorials on youtube, she doesn't really do things like cosplay, but her tips on eye make up are amazing.

And last of all... (I could spend longer typing, but my toast has just popped up)

- Invest in a eyelash curler. They are worth it. =)

Hope that helps ^.^

@ Lumissne
It's acutally recommended that you use both liquid and powder foundation.
Liquid firsts of course, that gives you the base cover and then powder will take away the shine from the liquid and give you more of a matte look.

DON'T USE FOUNDATION TO HIDE PIMPLES ETC! Naturally the more foundation you put on your face, the more caked on it appears. You use concealer for that type of thing, like covering up spots and make sure if the foundation is light that the concealer is properly rubbed in.

You can get tinted moisturiser if you aren't used to foundation. It's much lighter and less worry about matching your skin tone to foundation.

If you have really nice skin, don't feel like you have to wear foundation. Powder is perfectly fine if your skin is good, and it will kill any shininess that invariably shows up in photos (especially ones with flash).

I second getting either a beginners make up book or looking for stuff on YT. There's so much available on the net it's crazy.

I have a specific eyeliner tip to add to CheriLina's. Don't put liquid liner on your waterline. It burns. That was my first massive noob mistake. Also, if you want to line the lid underneath, don't put dark eyeliner all the way around, stick to the outer 1/3 of the line or so, it opens your eyes up a lot and just looks better.

Oh, and pff, don't worry about not knowing anything about make up at your age, I didn't either until I left high school and now I'm a make up artist. Luls abound.

Double that~
no need to use mascara then, especially if you're wanting to look more natural.
